In the Feeding Frenzy live album, JB changes the line in Margaritaville
from "I cut my heel, had to cruise on back home," to "I broke my leg
twice, I had to limp on back home..." Did Jimmy really ever break his
leg? I feel bad because I have only achieved parrot head status in the
past couple of months. (The 6/7 Chicago show was my first- it was
incredible...) Anyway, I looked on all the FAQ's and couldn't find an
answer about that line. I was just curious becase I broke my leg a few
months ago and so I have a morbid sense of empathy with others who have
had that pretty awful experience, too...

Thanks,
Jon

Yea, in 1978. He was playing softball, and he broke his ankle in 2
places. They tried setting it, but you know how hard it would be to keep
Jimmy down! So, what they ended up doing was re-breaking it, setting it
with pins and sending him off again. They did that to speed up the
healing process. Don't know how he did it the second time, if there was
a second time, or if he meant the re-breaking as the second time.

Yes, I think this first appeared in the dual album "You Had To Be There."
One of the liner photos shows Jimmy wearing a cast while on stage.

Check out the live double CD "You had to be there" circa 1978 (MCAD2-6005)

In addition to constantly talking about his broken leg, he sings about it,
is pictured in the liner notes with a cast and a cane.

Is that what he refers to in the first verse of "Growing Older But Not Up"?

during the "you had to be there tour" jimmy sat on stage with his broken
leg proped up on an old wooden boat hull, on the cover to the album, there
is jimmy sitting on a wall with his cast and cane (hence the phrase "with
this cane i can walk anywhere" ), and a little caption next to it saying
"broken leg".

I can't remeber exactly what year it was, I think the late 70's or early 80's
I was at a concert in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and his leg was broken. There was
another time after that , but it was too many years ago for me to remeber
exactly when.

Check the liner notes of "You Had To be There."
Jimmy is listed as "Broken Leg," rather than Jimmy
Buffett. Also, he opened with SOASOAS, and the words
were changed from:

The sea's in my veins, my tradition remains,
I'm just glad I don't live in a trailer

to:

This cast is no blast, but its coming off fast,
and I feel like I'm pulling a trailer.

I'll have to look back, again, but I believe that quote was from the You
Had To Be There album. And, inside you should see a picture of JB
playing with a cast on his leg. Not fun, I bet!

He sings about breaking his leg on "Coconut Telegraph," in "I'm Growing
Older, But not Up" sounds like it was a softball game~

"I rounded first, never thought of the worst,
As I studied the shortstop's position.
Then Crack went my leg, like the shell of an egg,
Someone call a decent physician.

I'm no Pete Rose,
That's how it goes.
While My mind is quite flexible,
These brittle bones don't bend"

(from memory, no flames please!)

And on the 1996 calendar there's a full description of the accident on May
page

He also alludes to it in the "You had to be there" version of
Margarittaville:

"Broke my leg had to limp on back home,
Lord, I still feel pain,
I wish I had some cocaine,
but that's been gone since early this morn"

I saw Jimmy in a concert at the Omni in Atlanta in 1980 and his leg was in a cast. During the concert he said
he broke it playing softball. Two weeks later, he recorded part of the music in "You Had to Be There" in the
Fox Theatre in Atlanta (he also recorded part of it in Miami) when the pictures for the album were taken. I
also read somewhere that he broke it again, but I don't remember how.

Jimmy also appeared on Saturday Night Live and sang "Son of a Son" while wearing the
cast. He modified the last few lines, singing "this cast is a drag and I feel like I'm
pulling a trailer".

from memory in Growing Older But Not Up on CT it goes something like
... I rounded first never thought of the worst as I studied the
shortstop's position...
... crack went my leg like the shell of an egg ...

so I assume he broke it once playing American cricket and I think that was
the second time - don't
ask me why
Again from memory ( I am about 1000k away from my music) there was a
picture of him
with leg in cast on the vinyl edition of You had to be there but maybe
not...

From the Album notes for You had to be there

RECORDED LIVE AT: The Fabulous Fox in Atlanta, Georgia (August 8, 9, 10,
1978), Maurice Gusman Cultural Center Miami (August 14, 15, 16, 1978)

There is a picture of his cast captioned "Broken leg"

Jon, Jimmy crashed his plane a few years ago and broke his leg. DOnt't
really know if it was really twice or not. Welcome to the magic kingdom
of Margaritaville. It's a blast!>

I don't know if you know it or not, but JB had a broken leg when he made
the live album " You Had To Be There".

Ok here is the scoop according to the Jimmy Buffett calendar....

Jimmy broke his leg in 1978 while playing softball in Palm Beach. His
right ankle was broken in two places.

Later that year, in Las Angeles, the doctors decided to re-break it and
set it with a pin.

That's the story that I read and I'm sticking to it..... ;-)

I guess this is a weak tangent, but you'd probably have to have quite a
few boat drinks to break your leg on a pop top hehehehehe :)

(and yeah, I do know about JB breaking his leg and all that.....)

The original "cut my heel had to cruise on back home" got unofficially
changed to "broke my leg ..." after Jimmy broke his leg playing softball
(sliding in to second, I believe). I say Jimmy at a concert in Atlanta
when his leg was still in a cast, and he mentioned how he broke it.
