A question here about David Allen Coe.
I recently got his Jimmy Buffett Doesn't Live In KeyWest Anymore
off of Napster and I noticed what seemed to be a version
of him doing Why Don't We Get Drunk And Screw too.
But when I downloaded it, it was actually Buffett's original version.
What's up with this? I checked several other times
and all the WDWGDAS's listed as D.A.C. were all actually
Buffett's version??? Why is this?
Does Coe in fact do a cover of WDWGDAS?

Also, a word here too about David Allen Coe and his place in my
record collection. I have to admit that I have a few of his songs such as
The Ride, Waylon&Willie&Me, and Perfect C&W Song,
and I admit, the man can sing the hell out a country song.
however, having said that, I also want to go on record that I find the vast
majority
of his music to be offensive, racist, sexist, juvenile, ignorant, vile, and
bigoted.
This is a man that Waylon Jennings once called "A pimple on the butt of Country
music." David Allen Coe is a posterboy for the worst side of Redneckism.
It is people like him that give all of the rest of us Southerners a bad name.
I know he'll excuse his lyrics as "just joking around" ...kinda like the
flipside
of Eminem and NWA...but it still leaves a bad smell in my stereo.
DAC is kinda like a giant turd with a tiny jewel inside,
but IMHO, the shit ain't worth the shine.
His "If That Ain't Country" could have been an all time great song
except for his having to defile it with racist slurs in the lyrics.
The South would have risen again a long long time ago if we didn't have
ignorant jackass peckerwoods like this holding us down.

Another David Allen Coe story.
This one from Richmond, VA ...the former Capitol of the Confederacy
where the city's Southside is known for growing world class rednecks.
Several years ago Coe played a concert in Richmond ( No, I wasn't there. )
at the old Flood Zone which was famous for it's second floor wrap-around
balcony overlooking the stage on the 1st floor.
About halfway thru Coe's concert, a very drunk redneck fan leaned over
the railing, yelled YeeeeHaaaaaa!!!!! and then began projectile vomiting
at extremely high velocity
which came raining down on Coe's band & wife who was on stage playing
keyboards.
DAC got way pissed,( and rightly so! )
said this was the shittiest town he'd ever played in,
and then he and the whole band tromped off the stage and did not return.
Not that I can blame them, kinda hard to put your best foot forward and
go on with the show while covered in reeking puke.
I would not have liked to have been a roadie that night.
David Allen Coe has not performed in Richmond since.

Ironically, Frank Sinatra...while performing here several years ago,
collaped onstage in mid-concert at the old Mosque Theatre.
He screamed to his aides "Get me outta this shithole!"
before being rushed to the hospital. He never performed here again either.
( But at least no one puked on him. )

So, ...Richmond, Virginia;
Birthplace of the Beer Can (1930) and
Shittiest Town in the South! ;-)

My grandpa chalie always said
Lay down with dogs, yer gonna get fleas.

Davey my boy...hang out with real rednecks long enough
and yer gonna get puked on son!
Don't talk the talk if ya can't walk the walk!

Napster is kind of you get what you get. It isn't all that unusual for someone
to make a mistake on the artist when saving the file. After that is doesn't
take long for it to be copied to other folks and be all over the place with the
error.

(rest of good stuff snipped)
I agree with most all you say about DAC, except for his "She Used to
Love Me A Lot". Always brings tears to my eyes when he sings it, for
some unknown reason. And, it is even better when sung by Martha and
Eddie Adcock.

Very true. There are now thousands of people, because of Napster, who think that
Buffett did the Pina Colada Song and sounds just like Rupert Holmes.

Couldn't agree more. Some guy on rec.music.country.western recently came across
Coe's music on one of the alt.binaries mp3 groups and raved about him. I I can't
remember which he liked best....Litlle Suzy Shallow Throat or N__g_r F__k_r.
Wouldn't you love to be this guys girlfriend? Wonder what he considers good dinner
music? Wonder if he goes to school at Marshall?

About Naptster. I think some of that confusion comes from people not having exact,
correct, or dedicated folder names and Napster's showing the complete path to the
file. If I share C:\music for download and stick Come Monday.mp3 in C:\music\Coe\,
you're going to see Coe\Come Monday.mp3 on Napster and assume it's by DAC.

About 10 years ago I worked the late night shift while going to school in a
Piggly Wiggly stocking shelves to 6 in the morning . One morning about 3 am
DAC and his boys came walking in and I mean it looked like Hells Angels had
taken over the store .
They were in there for about 2 hours while I sat up front and watched to see
what the hell these guys were doing . Finally when it came to check out they
had 8 buggies full of food and that when I recognized who it was .
He pulled out a wad of 100 dollar bills while I sacked my ass off thinking "Oh
hell this is going to be one hell of a tip"..I sacked and sacked while he stood
there and talked to me...then I walked these buggies full food out to this
camper and helped load it up . I looked around to see where DAC was at and I
couldn't find him . Well while I l was putting there goods up he snuck off in
another car and one of his guys tells me "David appreciates what you've done he
said he'll take care of ya next time."
I said oh thats ok tell him I said I love that song "Margaritaville" and walked
off with my trail of buggies!

i once looked but dac on napster, trying to find "buffett doesn't live
in key west" (which turned out to be a very whiny, self-pitying, and
mundane song); saw all his other wonderful titles. and guess what? you
can buy them on a great hits album. woohoo. ain't freedom of speech
great? thankfully, he is easily ignored.

and btw, the Perfect C&W song was written by Steve Goodman, god rest his
wonderful soul. aka "you don't have to call me darling, darling." i'd
rather hear steve sing it anyday, too.

One of the best punchlines I've read to a great story ever! Jake, was it you
who caused DAC to write that JB Doesn't Live Here Anymore song?

I completely agree with both of the points expressed, here. :)

I also prefer Steve's version of "City of New Orleans." We lost a great
talent, much too early. (I also have to confess that I kinda like
Steve's version of "Elvis Imitators", too. <g>)

Yep, Wiz & t.a. said it,
ol' Steve was the man!
In all truth, while I prefer Arlo's version
of Steve's "City of New Orleans",
I think two of Goodman's signature songs
"Banana Republic's" and "How Much Tequila Did I Drink Last Night?" actually
out-Buffett Buffett on capturing the true
spirit of the tropics and tequila.
Certainly those two songs sit beside
"A Pirate Lokks At 40" and "Margaritaville"
as among the best tropical heart songs ever written.
Steve Goodman...god what an awesome talent!

I agree with all of that. Plus his cover of The Dutchman (Steve Smith?) is
one of my all time favorites. I do think that Jimmy did a pretty good job
covering some of Goodman's songs on his early albums.

I agree 100% with all the pro-Goodman sentiments being stated here, and have to
add that "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request" is the 2nd best baseball song ever
written, trailing just slightly behind Danny Kaye's hilarious "D-O-D-G-E-R-S"
song. If you love baseball, check out these two tunes. I believe they're both
available on a Rhino CD called "Baseball's Greatest Hits." Well worth searching
for.

Oh, yeah. I think it mostly comes down to personal preferences. In the
main, I tend to prefer Steve's version of the majority of his songs, but
I much prefer Jimmy's version of "Banana Republic", for instance.

Bottom line is, though, that I'm not gonna turn *any* of them off. :)

An interesting tidbit of information here that I recall reading in some
obscure publication or website...

This song was supposedly co-written by Steve Goodman and John Prine. Prine
reputedly thought the song "stupid" and didn't want to be associated with
it. He signed all the rights to it over to Goodman and told him he didn't
want his name used in conjunction with the song..

Steve Goodman is one of those guys you wish was still around!

and I'm glad that John Prine is still around!

A true story. And when the song made Steve some money, he bought John a

written by Steve and John, went Top 5. Because Prine refused his writer

I'm sure we all know that since Coe says it in the song.

My two cents...

"The Ride" by David Allan Coe is his best song! If you don't know it, you
need to download it from Napster and give it a listen.

Um... Ok, I'm not sure exactly what this post concerns because my dumbass
newsreader only picked up this response, but I suppose it has to do with Coe
& Buffett. Coe (and it is Allan as in the response, not Allen as in the
header) obviously liked what Buffett did in the '70s, as evidenced by
several cuts like "Divers Do It Deeper", some stuff from the "Compass Point"
LP and one entire side from the album "Spectrum Vll (plus the kiss-off
"Jimmy Buffett Doesn't Live in Key West Anymore" from one of the adult
albums available all over Napster.) I can't agree with the statement that
"The Ride" is his best, since he didn't write it (though it is pretty good)
and, for all his craziness, he's written some good stuff that ranks above
the covers he's done. Some of the original songs off "Human Emotions" are
killer. Coe does a duet with John Prine on "Souvenirs" (doing a great and
weird Prine imitation, no less) on Prine's latest rerecordings of some of
his earlier work. Coe remains edgy, while Buffett has lost some of his more
adventurous fans in the quest for the yuppie dollar. I suggest listening to
the Drive-By Truckers, Slobberbone, Charlie Robison, the Backsliders, Kevin
Gordon, and, after all these years, David Allan Coe.
