Recently, my sons aksed what barometer soup was. I was pretty sure it had
something to do with fog and weather stuff, but I wasn't sure. Instead,
we have decided that we will try making barometer soup in the fall when it
gets cold out.

In the meantime, what does it refer to?

thanks

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but when I saw Jimmy in Tampa in February,
he played Barometer Soup, and he said something about writing in for/about
Jerry Garcia. Does anybody else remember this? I was in a little bit of a
fog, so my facts may be mixed up.

He probably introduced Uncle John's Band. He recorded this song for
Fruitcakes and played it as an encore for the summer after Jerry died in 1995.
Brought tears to my eyes at Nissan that Saturday after 8/9/95.

In Tenn (I don't remember if it was the Nashville or Knoxville show), he
said he wrote Barometer Soup for Jerry. As for the meaning I think it
is in the Barometer Soup liner notes.

No, it wasn't Uncle John's Band, that he talked about Jerry before. That
is my favorite Dead song (I'm not a deadhead obviously, I'm a parrothead),
but if it was a reference before Uncle John's Band, I'd definately have
noticed.

It is a vague translation of a restaurant phrase for "Soup of the Day"
It changes as fast as the weather.

According to Bubba's own words, Barometer Soup "...was first mentioned by
Herman Wouk (anybody know the source?)..." and seems to refer to those
"...characters...who dare to be different even when it it is not the most
popular thing." Perhaps in those climes where "...the barometer doesn't
dance much." And where it's "...hot and humid..." Sounds like soup fixin's
to me! I think the answer's in the liner notes...anybody else?

Thanks to all who answered.

Yesterday, when the weather front went through here and cooled things off,
I had a cup of clam chowder. (The real stuff, not that tomato crap from
NYC...those New Yohkers can't make salsa and they can't make chowdah. I'm
beginning to think that only those of Italian descent from that city
should be allowed near a tomato ; ) ) Micah took a sip and declared it to
be the best Barometer soup he ever had.

They now have decided that Barometer soup is Clam Chowder.

Thanks again all.

Recipe for Barometer Soup:

3 - Cases of cold Corona
3 - Lemons or Limes
5 - Dozen Clams (Little Necks)
5 - Dozen Shrimp (Preferably barbecued Cajun style)
1- Boat (size and shape does not matter)
1- Large body of water (Preferably salt)
1- CD Player with extra batteries and plenty of Buffett discs

Mix together under direct sunlight at about 90 degrees F for about 12
hours with a couple of friends. Add more Corona as needed or substitute
gin.

Mark twain was on an expedition of the Alps in the 1880's and tried to boil his barometer in his bean soup, experimenting with the altitude and pressure. He claimed this gave the soup a surprisingly nice taste and continued making it from there onwards. I believe this is where the title of the album comes from.

"I hunted up another barometer; it was new and perfect. I boiled it half an hour in a pot of bean
soup which the cooks were making. The result was unexpected: the instrument was not affecting
at all, but there was such a strong barometer taste to the soup that the head cook, who was a most
conscientious person, changed its name in the bill of fare. The dish was so greatly liked by all,
that I ordered the cook to have barometer soup every day."
