A question for any Key West locals or anybody else: There's a place at Key
West Bight that's supposed to be JB's Shrimpboat Sound studio. Well, I
believe everything and anything, but this one doesn't seem right. The
building is white, one story, no markings or any identification of any type.
It has one regular size door, and one sliding, loading dock type door. No
windows to speak of.
June Keith's Keys book says the studio is "two stories high," but this
building is only one. It just seems too small to be a recording studio. It's
no bigger than a house. And too close to where tourists are, by the fishing
boats, shops, and restaurants / bars. But the sign there at the bight says
that's the studio.
Is this just BS they tell the tourists? Should I keep looking for the
ficticious Key West Foreign Legion?

Maybe it has a basement? ;)
Either that, or it was two stories and sank into the muck there at the bight.
So they just moved the entrance up a floor or so.

I can't answer your question - but I will say this - if you were rich & famous
and constantly hounded by fans, and had thousands of dollars worth of high-end
recording gear and instruments and needed a place you could work at peacefully
and be left alone - would you put it in a non-descript place that most people
never give a second look to, or would you make it as conspicuous as possible
with a sign and other markings letting everyone that passes by know -
Attention: famous rich folk inside with lots of expensive toys?
As for size - if you ever get a chance to visit tiny Sun Studio in Memphis -
it's smaller than most efficientcy apts but some of the greatest songs of all
times were recorded there.
My suggestion - if yer still in KW, forget about Shrimpboat Sound and go on
over to Chicharrones and getcha some Mojo Cuban Pork Roast with sweet
plantains.

When it comes to recording studios, size has nothing to do with it.
Multi-tracking enables recording sessions to take place with just the
principals. The backup tracks, and such can be added much later. The
recording and editing is done piecemeal without all musicians needing to
be there at the same time.
I had the pleasure of visiting Grog Kill Studios in Jazz musician Carla
Bley's house some years back. She is known for writing huge pieces for
Brass Choir. The tracks for a 26 instrument piece were laid down 3
players at a time and that was cramped.

Thanks for the info. I was kinda surprised the studio was in such a touristy
area. Even though the building's not marked, it is pointed out on the
directory there as being JB's recording studio.

Had a blast with this one. Did run into some problems as I had printed it
out on 1/21. But we had great fun just the same. We were in Mallory Square
when we decided to tackle this one, so as opposed to trotting to the other
side of the island we took it backwards! We worried a bit because if we made
one little mistake on the calculations it could have had a very bad effect!
But we made it. Spent a couple of hours, had a great time, learned a lot and
got to see several things we otherwise wouldn't have seen.
Had lunch at the Cheeseburger place, but the grill had just broken down so
we didn't get to have burgers. But it was great just the same.
Thanks!
Didn't see no pic!!!!

Couldn't figure this one out either. Not able to find any picture. It would
be neat to see it.

well.... :-)
I'll help you out. Go to the bottom of the logs and hit the "show them all
on one page " button. Then scroll all the way down to the log on January
6 by Kaeferdriver. Right below his log he mentions meeting JB and his
name has a camera icon next to it. Click on his name and up pops the
picture. Ifin it's not stepping on any toes I could post a direct link
but
since the owner of the page didn't.....I'll give you a chance to go the long
way.

Mayday
I just clicked on the camera and there it was.
With my luck, I could probably run smack into Jimmy and knock him into the
water without recognising him.

Ha! Not gonna fall for looking for the KWFL again this time . . . I mean,
Yeah, the KWFL is right there, you can see it from here. Yeah, that's the
ticket. . . . :-)

In NYC's Village, Electric Ladyland reputed to be Jimi Hendrix's custom
made studio is on a very touristy street. According to a friend of mine
who is a NYC nightlife photog, Hendrix used it only once. The many
times that I walked past Electric Ladyland en route to my friend, Mary's
house -- I never saw anybody enter or leave the place. Same goes for
Mother's, yet tracks were laid down in these places.
Don't feel bad. Something like that happened to me with Elvis Costello
at the Hotel Pierre in NYC a few years back.
Recording studios not needing to be huge isn't really that new a thing either.
I've actually been in studio one at Abbey Road (long story) at it would fit in
my house with plenty of room to spare. The only reason the Abbey Road facility
is as big as it is is that there are a LOT of offices as well as multiple
studios, editing facilities, etc. The front lobby is bigger than the studios.

Actually, I literally bumped in Earl Klugh at a local music store once a couple
years ago. What really made it bad was that I picked up a used Earl Klugh
album while I was there, and had to be told who it was by the clerk.
(Apparently Klugh goes there a lot.)
A friend of mine held the door for someone as they were exiting Abbey Road at
the same event that I was at. After he was gone and down the road she realized
it had been Sting.
(No, I didn't meet anyone other than the folks I already knew ... but it was
still cool to be able to walk back into the actual studios!)

It was Mike Score, who's the lead singer. Without that waterfall haircut that
he had in the 80's he looks quite different.
Well, then, I guess that really "is" the Shrimpboat Sound studio on Key
West.
For those who missed the start of this thread, you can see JB's recording
studio at Key West Bight (not far from Caroline Street). Look on the
directory when you get there, it shows where it is. It's a small unmarked
white building.
Maybe Jimmy will be there sometime. That would make a phans day.
Thanks for all the info.

Key West Bight is by the A&B Lobster House and Turtle Kralls; that area. The
tourist map I got from the hotel shows it. When you get near the water,
there are directories like you would find in a mall. The directories point
out JB's Studio. AFA his old Margaritaville store, I don't know. I'm not
familiar with that, but surely somebody around here is!
