I know this method works for playing PS1 games:

Pop open the top of your PS2 (be REALLY careful not to unplug the Eject
Button/power button cable...it's a pain to get popped back in). Once you open
it up, start up the PS2 with the Pro Action Replay PS1 CD. Let it load up.
Start a game with no codes but don't start the game just yet. Take the top
part of the CD compartment off, swap the disc, put it back on and press X a
few times to get the game running (For some reason, my Pro Action Replay
freezes up you don't press X twice). Poof, you're playing a backed up PS1
game.

I haven't tried any PS2 games because (1) I have no PS2 backups and (2) my Pro
Action Replay memory card went kaput, so I can't tell if that method works or
not for PS2 games.
