NASA Rejects Claims it Plans Mind Reading Capability
NASA managers today said published media reports suggesting the agency
plans to read the minds of potential terrorists go too far and ignore
the facts and science behind the research.
The articles were based on a NASA presentation, which served as
talking points for a meeting with Northwest Airlines in December 2001.
The presentation was in response to the call from the Federal
Government for all agencies to look inward and find what could be done
to help in the war on terrorism.
"NASA does not have the capability to read minds, nor are we
suggesting that would be done," said Robert Pearce, Director, NASA's
Strategy and Analysis Division in the Office of Aerospace Technology
in Washington. "Our scientists were asked to think outside the box
with regards to ideas that could aid the nation in the war on
terrorism and that's what they are doing. We have not approved any
research in this area and because of the sensitivity of such research,
we will seek independent review before we do."
The information contained in the presentation identified research and
development challenges that NASA is currently aware of in the
information technology arena, and the agency offered some limited
thoughts and proposed possible solutions in this field. Some of the
ideas will take several years of effort to establish, if there is a
practical application.

The Mothman Prophecies
from "Everything is Under Control" by Robert Anton Wilson
In 1968, West Virginia, especially in the area bordering
on Ohio, became the scene of an outbreak of weirdity that
crisscrosses several categories of controversy.
As documented in John Keel's The Mothman Prophecies, the
phenomena included:
[|] the first in the series of mysterious "cattle mutilations-
that have recurred regularly in many other states, usually
further west;
[|] over 100 sightings of strange lights (or UFOs) in the sky;
[|] three classic "close encounter" cases, in which people saw,
or thought they saw, extraterrestrials, or critters they

[|] about 70 sightings of Mothman, a traditional "monster' of
the area who, like Bigfoot and Nessie, keeps coming back to
shock or terrorize a few witnesses, but never lingers long
enough to be scientifically confirmed; and

Cadillacs and looking vaguely "Oriental." Mothman is, or
appears as, or is hallucinated as, a humanoid figure with
giant mothlike wings and glaring red eyes.
Another spook visiting the area called himself Indrid Cold and
said he came from a planet named Lanulos. He appeared twice to
a salesman named Woodrow Derenberger, with whom he seemed to
communicate by telepathy. Derenberger was thereafter vexed by
strange phone calls combining threats, electronic hums, and

(8/19/2002) Numerous reports this weekend from Moscow,
Baghdad, and Washington say that Russia and Iraq are
poised to put name to paper in an historic economic
cooperation agreement some claim will be valued at as
much as US$60 billion. Abbas Khalaf, Iraq's ambassador
to the Kremlin confirmed the mega-deal today and said
it would be signed in a week or two.
The news of the Russia-Iraq alignment ruined vacationing
US President George W. Bush's day, him having his heart
set on besting his dad by ousting Saddam Hussein when
Bush senior failed to do so. Bush junior desperately
needs a diversion for the American public, which has
been bedraggled by corporate crime and corruption,
implications of Bush intimates being involved in
considerable accounting gymnastics, a lackluster
economy and roller coaster stock market. He wanted
it before the midterm elections this fall, but that
now looks very unlikely.

Vladimir Putin et al that an alliance was
established whereby Russian oil companies
are to develop Iraqi oil reserves through a
$40 billion award of oil and gas development
contracts for 49 oil and gas reservoirs to
Russian oil companies by Iraq's Ministry of
Petroleum. The following month, 17 additional
petroleum industry projects were set for joint
development over a ten-year period by Russian
companies and the Iraq Petroleum Company.
As they stand at this time, however, these
awards and contracts can't be acted upon due
to UN sanctions.

wanted by FBI for alleged links to the
Sept. 11 hijackers has been detained
by the Saudi authorities, his father said
Saturday.
Saud Abdulaziz Saud al-Rasheed
surrendered voluntarily to the Interior
Ministry on Thursday, said his father.
The FBI issued a bulletin Tuesday night
seeking the immediate arrest of the
21-year-old Saudi man, saying he was
suspected of being "associated with the
September 11, 2001 hijackers."
The Saudi Interior Ministry on Saturday
would not confirm or deny it was
holding al-Rasheed.
Abdulaziz Saud al-Rasheed said he had urged
his son to turn himself in to the ministry
because he was sure of the young man's innocence
and feared for his safety after the FBI alert.
The elder al-Rasheed, who works for the Saudi Red Crescent
society in the capital Riyadh, denied the FBI accusations
against his son, calling him a peaceful person who
"has nothing to do with terror networks."
He said his son was in Egypt when the alert was issued
and returned to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.
Saud al-Rasheed, who runs a small sweets shop in Riyadh,
was previously in Afghanistan to take part in humanitarian
efforts there and returned to Saudi Arabia several months
before the Sept. 11 attacks, the father said, speaking
from Riyadh by telephone with The Associated Press in Dubai.
"He confirmed to me had no relations with any terror group
there, specifically al-Qaida or the Taliban regime," he said.
The United States has blamed the attacks on the Pentagon
and World Trade Center on al-Qaida, which is led by the
Saudi exile Osama bin Laden. U.S. and allied Afghan forces
overthrew the Taliban government of Afghanistan last
year after the Taliban refused to hand over bin Laden
and al-Qaida members.
The FBI bulletin said Saud al-Rasheed's current whereabouts
were not known. It warned that he should be considered
armed and dangerous.
The agency said it issued the alert after an image of
al-Rasheed's Saudi passport was found among material
"previously recovered during the war on
terrorism" connected to the Sept. 11 hijackers.

photo from Pakistan.
"Saud told me that he entered Afghanistan through
Pakistan and that he gave that particular photo to
the Pakistani authorities in his visa application,"

"anti-technology" was the supposition that humans would create machines that
would ultimately destroy them. I am not interested in high-tech gadgetry
without a brain. AI is the threat, people, not screening equipment at
airports (unless, of course, you have something to hide). Idiots like the
woman caught at the airport today with a .357 in her baggage "deserve the
harshest treatment" (to quote Fox Mulder). Human failings are bad enough. I
know for a fact there are so-called "shadow governments" and such, that the
current military-industrial complex is going full speed ahead since Sept.
11. This is all becoming a disaster for the human race. I was interested if
anyone had taken the Terminator movies and written on them in that context.
Cameron himself, of course, couldn't be more pro-technology. I would
actually ascribe to him technophelia.
