I was trying to find out more about Michael Gothard's work (he of course
played Loque in FYEO). I was stunned to read that he'd committed suicide.
Does anyone know any more about this? I haven't watched any other work that
he has done (except the part he played in a Professionals episode) and i was
looking to watch any other films and programmes he's starred in.

Gothard had an extensive career in films and television, credits
include Ken Russell's THE DEVILS. He and one-time Bond contender
Oliver Tobias became sex symbols in the 1970's in the series
ARTHUR OF THE BRITONS (a cousin of mine had a huge crush on
him). Gothard gets a positive mention in a recent Video Watchdog
piece on director Gordon Hessler detailing his appearance in
SCREAM AND SCREAM AGAIN (which is on a nice double-bill DVD).

thanks mac - i was more interested in why he committed suicide (apparently
hanged himself). i'm not a morbid bloke but for someone who was in one of my
favourite bond films, i was just interested.
thanks anyway

His FOR YOUR EYES ONLY co-star Jill Bennett also committed suicide.

Also check out superb performances as Felton in The Three Musketeers
(1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974), also as Lusk in Jack The Ripper
(the 1988 Michael Caine TV version)
As for why he committed suicide, who knows why anyone does that?
Speaking as one who lost a brother through suicide, all I can say is
that if the person doesn't leave a note, it will always be a mystery

The licence to kill for the Secret Service, the double-0 prefix,
was a great honour. It had been earned hardly. It brought James Bond
the only assignments he enjoyed - the dangerous ones.

I believe Pedro Armendariz also committed suicide... very sad too.
He did, though he was terminally ill. That may have had something to do
with his taking his life.
Tom Zielinski
"Tell it to the concierge."
i read somewhere that he and hemingway were friends, and that he admired the
fact that hemingway had taken his own life rather than let cancer take him.
Pedro was in great pain due to cancer. He was exposed to radiation in
the soil while filming desert scenes in the film THE CONQUERER (aslo
starred John Wayne, Susan Hayworth, Agnes Morehead among others who
also died of cancer.) The area was previously the testing area for
the atomic bombs.
Pedro had approximately a few weeks left of his life. He had a gun
smuggled into the hospital and ended his agony.

Seems like a stupid place to film a movie. Save a couple of bucks by filming
on a location no one else wants?? This must have been back in the days when
they said atom bombs left very little radioactive material and they did
field manouevres with live tactical nukes going off in the distance. The
official army line was something like 'if you're close enough for the
radiation to kill you, the atomic shock wave will do it first'. Consequently
many US soldiers ended up having cancer from exposure to radiation.
Was it ever proven that these actors developed cancer due to their
involvement in this particular film?

Even the director Dick Powell dies of cancer; of course you could say
they died because of smoking related cancer but I think it's pretty much
accepted that it was exposure to radiation that was the cause. The
fallout from Chernobyl reached the northern and western edges of Europe
sparking fear that the Laps would have to cull their Reindeer herds and
that Scottish and Welsh hill farmers would lose thier sheep flocks.
At the time the dangers of airborne particle spread probably wasn't as
well documented as it is today.

The test in question took place May 19, 1953. Filming took place that
summer, with assurances that there was no danger.

A liberal site's strong view.

Proven, in terms of cancer, is a pretty high bar. There was a cluster of
brain cancer cases in a Chicago chemical laboratory (later owned by
Amoco, now BP) was controversial for years, and that was with tissue
samples, precise measurements of various toxins in the vicinity of work
areas, and tedious examination fo historical records of chemical work done.
There does seem to be an abnormally high number of cancer deaths in the
film's cast, something like 300% normal (then again, I don't think
anybody's really counted them in 20 years -- it's probably higher than
that).
