Here are all the homages to past 007 flicks that I noticed in TWINE. Please
post more if you catch them.
1. Boat Chase. Similar to Live and Let Die, obviously, except that Bond is
the pursuer this time. Also, going on land was slightly reminiscant of the
gondola in Moonraker. The restaurant was similar to the skiing over the
table in For Your Eyes Only.
2. Ski Chase. Did they just copy this from On Her Majesty's Secret
Service? Even if they meant to, I have no problem with it. I'm just
curious. Similarities include Bond and girl on slope (girl wearing Tracy
outfit from OHMSS), zooming through trees. Tall cliff. Bond stops.
Pursuer goes over the side.
3. Submarine Escape. They went out of a torpedo tube like Bond in You Only
Live Twice.
4. Bernard Lee's portrait on the wall.
5. Chainsaw Helicopters. Combination of helicopter chase in From Russia
With Love and yo-yo-saw in Octopusssy.
6. People in an oil pipeline. Koskov in The Living Daylights.
7. Actress playing a too-sophisticated role. Tanya Roberts in A View to a
Kill.
8. Reference to Electra. Melina Havelock in FYEO says "Greek women, like
Electra, always avenge their loved ones."
9. Seduction of Dr. Molly Warmflash is like the spa-shower seduction in
Thunderball.

That's all of which I can think, right now.

Good list and I concur.

The important one you missed is when Electra asks Bond if he's ever lost
someone he's loved.

Good acting by Brosnan and Marceau, and wonderful connection to Bond's past.

Well done.

Yeah, right after I posted it I remembered things that I had forgotten.
There just were so darn many!

Forgot to mention the most obvious one: the title! As most of you should
know (if you don't you don't deserve to be on this newsgroup) it was from
the College of Arms scene in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. There has
been some debate about whether this is Bond's family motto or whether it is
just his ancestors'. Well, I suppose TWINE settles that one. I was a bit
cautious after reading Janet Maslin's review in the New York Times because
she mentioned that the funniest part of the film was Brosnan trying to fit
the title into the dialogue. I sincerely doubt she even saw On Her
Majesty's Secret Service, because I thought it fit in quite well.

"I could have given you the world."
"The world is not enough."
"What a foolish statement."
"Family motto."

You're missing an even more subtle allusion to OHMSS.

I'm sure she saw it... but I'm also sure she's not quite the anorak we
are.

SPOILERS
+++++++++++++++++

I like the tracking of Bond falling for Elektra. It's as though
she may become a replacement for Tracy... First... she asks if he's ever
lost anyone. Then... guess, what? They go skiing, lovely skiing
that's almost identical to Bond and Tracy.

Then he gets to rescue her from an avalanche... which he wasn't really
able to do before. The title, of course comes to mind. Very nice...
very subtle. Perhaps too subtle... but who cares? Makes ME think of
OHMSS.

My problem with the ski sequence was that it wasn't clear what was going
on there. Why were the parahawks there? To convince Bond that
Elektra's in danger, to lure him further? To kill Bond? That's what
Arkov and Renard seem to say, but it doesn't really ring true. Why? So
they can get M there? Just rather unclear, I'm afraid.

One obvious reference:

The title is lifted from OHMSS, during which the Bond family motto is revealed.
Bond confirms this in TWINE

I agree, the writers had to do too many conflicting things there in order to
accomodate a chase scene, I think.

As long as we're talking about homages in TWINE though, I couldn't help but
think that M's briefing was probably as close as could ever appear in the
movies to the briefing in Fleming's FYEO, which has been on my wish-to-see
list ever since I first read it.

It may have been on the original list, but certainly Renard acting as a
sniper to protect Bond when he needs him is a nice allusion to Red Grant at
the gypsy camp.

As for the parahawks, I think they were supposed to kill Bond. At that
point in the story Elektra didn't have Bond lured in and if he's dead she
could obviously plead for M to come there. She managed to do it when he was
simply missing, so her thoughts were in order. And I believe Renard told
Davidov that Bond was unarmed and still alive, not what was intended.
Killing Bond there, leaving Elektra to make a "dramatic" escape, only
enhances her ability to manipulate people in to feeling for her and
maintaining her innocence had the final plan actually worked.

Ya know, God it feels good to discuss the plot of a Bond film in post after
post - TND didn't give us much of a chance, did it?

Which is also a nod to actress Molly Peters, who portrayed Patricia Fearing the
seductee in Thunderball's Shrublands Spa. Now that's clever.
