OCTOPUSSY with out a doubt is the best Bond film ever made!
Who agrees?
It has everything you could possibly want in a Bond film! A car chase
(police car chase), a truck chase, a fight on top of a moving train! A
fight on top of an airborne plane! Beautiful Woman, An evil "tough guy"
henchman. A smart villian (Kamal). The best Bond actor (Roger Moore of
course). A helicopter chase. The only thing this Bond flick is missing
is a ski chase. A perfect 10 out of 10 no doubt!

I think "Octopussy" is one of the worst Bonds because its far too cheesy and too
silly for my tastes. The very weak villain was arguably the most effeminate bad
guy ever seen in the series and there were far too many scenes that made me roll
my eyes (the Tarzan yell, the Clown costume, Bond in the gorilla suit, Bond
silently getting out of gorilla suit in 0.5 milliseconds, the hot-air balloon
assault, etc, etc). In short, its one of the few Bond films I never want to see
again.

Octopussy is a middle of the road Bond. Nothing too special nothing too bad.
Certainly not Bond's "All Time High". Moore puts in a very respectable
performance. I don't like Moore as Bond but I rate this performance of his a
his second best behind FYEO. As I said it is an average one that would
probably come in around tenth or so on my list.

Eat a bowl of f**k. OP is my favourite Bond film, and my favourite film
in general. It sure ain't the BEST film ever made - it's full of crap
back-projection - but I have a sentimental attachment to it which I
can't be bothered explaining.

Roger Moore is the ultimate master. Ignore those who do not preach the
Roger gospel. Ditto Louis Jourdan. And that fat guy that Roger rubs in
the circus tent. And that white guy in TRUE ROMANCE who thinks he's
black and says, "Yo yo yo, why you trippin'?".

I can see how not everyone would like it, and that's fine. You probably
need the sentimental attachment.

BTW, I don't hate Sean Connery nearly as much now. I saw THE
UNTOUCHABLES the other day, and boy, did he deserve that Oscar, despite
his GODAWFUL "Irish" accent. He's still a foul James Bond, though.

There's no need to bash others for their opinions. The idea of a newsgroup
like this is for people to swap info and opinions (at least I think that is
the point). Your entitled to your opinion but some of your comments were a
little strong. I don't think I need to quote you on it.

Anyway, the crux is to respect others opinions.

Nobody, judging from John Darcy's painstaking tracking of the
best-to-worst lists posted here over the last couple months. Of 32 such
lists John has compiled, none list OP in the top three. It seems to
average a little below middle of the pack.

Oddly mechanical little checklist you've got there for what makes a good
Bond movie. No need for a plot, direction, writing; just give you a
bunch of chases, a girl, a bad guy, a henchman and Roger Moore and
you're happy. You are the ideal audience for EON's 70's and early 80's
output.

Actually, OP is my third favorite Moore film and it has a number of good
things going for it. I don't have much use for Kamal or his henchman,
both of whom seemed pretty ineffectual to me, but the Russian General
was an interesting villain motivated, at least partially, by seriously
misguided patriotism rather than the standard Bond villain's meglomania
or greed. The train sequence and the whole race to stop the nuke were
suspenseful and exciting. Bond's desperation in the circus scene is one
of his finest moments. It was also nice to see "Property of a Lady"
translated onto the screen. In fact, practically all the European
scenes in the film are pretty good.

The Indian segments, however, veer wildly into silliness. The chase
with those little golf-cart taxi things is ludicrous. The manhunt
through the jungle goes way out of its way to drain any suspense from
the sequence by introducing Moonraker-style stupidities. The assault on
Kamal's palace at the end is mostly played for cheap laughs, with Bond
looking particularly moronic floating in on that silly-assed balloon.
And the image of 007 zooming the video camera in and out on the breasts
of Q's assistant as though he had never seen cleavage before always
makes me cringe.

All in all, a better than average Moore Bond film, but a long, long way
from the best in the entire series.

Still a long way short of OHMSS however and Roger Moore is my least favourite

Nooooooooooooooooooo!

In my opinion, Octopussy is an average JB film, probably ranking 3rd in the
Moore list after TSWLM and FYEO. I suppose things like the ever-increasing
army of non-Moore looking stuntmen is can be offset by, say, Kristina
Wayborn.

Is that a rinse in your hair, Roger?

You must remember, though, that the Moore fans are just lazy bastards,
most of them who can't read the request for lists, or, if they CAN
read, do not bother to make a list. I am one of these Moore fans. OP
would be #1 if I had a list.

OP has a great plot and script, and Glen sure knows where to put the
camera for maximum effect, unlike some other directors. OHMSS has a
lame, disjointed, stop-and-start plot and cheesy and self-conscious
direction - and everyone seems to like that. Don't get me wrong, I
stoll like OP, but people are hassling it for reasons they use to
praise other films. Silliness, for me, seems to numb the pain of a
pretentious film. Or, in most other cases, inflict it.

Kamal is my favourite bad guy by a fair mile, but everything you list
here ARE easily the best parts of the movie. EVERYTHING in the list.
Moore in the circus tent is far better than anything any of the other
Bonds have done.

The golf-cart chase is the worst moment in the film - and it also
happens to be one of only two gratuitous moments in it. The other
gratuitous moment is - yes - the balloon bit. I don't care for these
moments, but in OP the silliness is married to a good plot and cast of
characters, which makes it better than something like MR, which is
merely good entertainment.

I can see clearly why everyone else hates, or at least dislikes this
movie. It's an absolute madman of a flick. But - and I've said this
before - I have a sentimental attachment to it, and no matter how many
better films come out, I will be blind to them, because they are not OP.

And even if I didn't have a sentimental attachment, I'd still like it.

But it's the same plot as the much superior 'The Fourth Protocol' (with that
whippersnapper Brosnan as the baddie). It's not *bad* when you take out the
cringeworthy 'in-jokes', and even has a few top Bond (and 'Q') moments, but
on the whole, at least to me, it doesn't gel as a solid movie, or even a
Bond film. I *want* to like it, and perhaps that's where it fails - I
shouldn't need to *want* to like it...

Well, I like the bond theme being played, Moore is Moore after all, but I may
have to try that for the tarzan yell. As it is, I had to video-dub in the end
of the credits(where it has the gunbarrel really fast to even out the music.) I
was shocked to see that it had been edited out of the new version of Octopussy.
That is one of the things that made Octopussy Octopussy, was that really fast
gunbarrel sequence at the end.

I disagree. If you're going to pick a Roger Moore film as
the best Bond adventure (and my own personal choice happens
to be a certain Lazenby film), then I honestly feel you have
to go with MOONRAKER. Or possibly TSWLM. Both films share
the same screenwriter (Christopher Wood) and director (Lewis
Gilbert). Both films exhibit the same visual flair,
impressive cinematography, exciting chase sequences, witty
dialogue, clever gadgets, beautiful women, imaginative
villains, and a charming & confident portrayal of Bond from
Roger Moore.

The reason I have to give the edge to MOONRAKER, however,
is that the plot of TSWLM is a flat-out rehash of YOLT.
As wonderful as the individual elements of TSWLM are,
they are ultimately tied together by the plot and we've
just seen it all before -- 10 years earlier to be exact.
MOONRAKER is able to more or less stay true to the
Bond formula while offering a fresh twist on the plot.
This time around, the bad guy isn't trying to start a
war or otherwise pit two superpowers against one another
(FRWL, YOLT, TSWLM, TND) but instead is trying to
wipe out everybody on earth via biological weapons.

IMHO, MOONRAKER really has it all. Mystery, action,
humor, charm, style, and superior production values.
Sure, one or two very brief moments went just a tad
too far over the top. But you can't make an omelet
without breaking a few eggs...

Indeed. I can't recall any of the regular posters repeatedly
offering OP as their choice of best Bond film. It also rates
a little below middle of the pack in my own personal list,
largely due to the fact that Roger just looked too old to
be believable as a field agent.

Now *this* remark I have to take issue with! :)
I rank the period 1971 - 1979 as the most consistently
entertaining era in the Bond film series. Note that
this includes the Connery effort, DAF. Just personal
preference, of course, but my point is that while I
disagree with the orginal poster's high praisal of
OP, it does not mean that I can't feel otherwise about
the earlier Moore efforts.

Agreed. Kamal was boring and quite wimpish, I thought.
And the dice-crushing big-guy was a blantant and one-dimensional
rip-off of Oddjob. Pathetic, really. The most interesting
henchmen are the ones that offer some originality or unique
threat: Tee Hee with his mechanical pincher arm, for instance.
Or Jaws, with his powerfully crushing teeth.

I've never cared for this scene. Bond seems desperate and helpless.
It's almost like he's crying "please help me!" Maybe it's partially
due to Roger's age factor here as well, but it just doesn't strike me
as something that James Bond would do. I like my Bond confident
and cool. Not helpless and desperate. This whole scene just seems
very, very inconsistent and out of character for me.

I like the golf-cart chase. Nicely done.

Hey! :)

Agreed. Reminds me of THE WIZARD OF OZ for some strange reason.
A very oorly done scene.

It shouldn't. How is this any different than Brosnan getting
a kick out of using those x-ray sunglasses in the TWINE casino
to view the ladies? Same principle -- Bond is a great admirer
of the female anatomy and enjoys using Q's technology to enhance
his pleasure in that area. Totally consistent with the rest
of the film series continuity.

Octopussy is definitely not the best Bond film! I don't really have a
favorite Bond film, and I don't really rate others above others but for me
Octopussy is the worst Bond film. I personally think this film is pretty
campy.
Good things about this film are Miss Wayborne, the train fight, and the
coupling of Roger Moore and Maud Adams. They make a good, believable
on-screen (off-screen too) couple.

TSWLM and MR are pretty much the same films (Lewis Gilbert even thinks
that!). They both want to destroy the population on Earth. Stromberg
does it from under the sea using nukes, and Drax from space using
biological weapons. Since you think TSWLM is a rehash of YOLT wouldn't
it also be said that MR is also a rehash of YOLT? Don't ask me what my
point was here. : )

for that matter so is TND, plus the Asian setting like in YOLT

Seriously, while I don't share your fondness for the era and I do feel
the films show a certain paint-by-numbers quality, there are definitely
moments in all of them that I like.

I find "confident and cool" all the time a little boring. If Bond
remains completely unconcerned about the procedings, why should I care
about them? I think the desperate but determined Bond Moore shows in
this scene is more consistent with the character at his best, such as
faced with the bomb he doesn't know how to disarm in Fort Knox or trying
to formulate a plan while Grant has him on his knees on the Orient
Express.

Similar principle, very different execution. Brosnan smiles knowingly,
both at the pulcritude on display and the wide variety of weapons hidden
on it. Moore fiddles obsessively, zooming in and out and making himself
look sophmoric. It's a matter of subtlety, a quality Moore's Bond too
often lacks.

Wow, someone who agrees :)
It might not be the 'Best' bond film, but it is certainly my faveourite.
I mean, forgiving the producers for the Tarzan yell, really there is little
else bad.
RM is finally smacking the baddies good and proper, there is a great onscree
chemistry between Moore and Adams, Jordan as Khamal although certainly not
the best villain is better than Elliot carver or drag laiden Blofeld from
DAF.
I mean, we have the suberb sequences, and the clown sequence, which someone
in this post classes at basically silly and comical, is certainly more
filled with and played with more tensiooon than had been in the films for a
while, I mean, Bond didn't even get the luxury of a 7 second break ala
Goldfinger!

I could argue for this film in anyway possible, however if people dont like
it it is their choice, I know people who have sat and watched the series all
the way through, turned around to me and said 'I understand why you like the
Roger Moore Bonds' even though they aren't huge RM fans themselves, some
have been converted, thinking RMs films were better overall than Connery's.
But that always happens.

Personally, Bond is Bond, and Connery and Moore togethr are Bond, we cannot
have that combination, but at least we have that contrast of films,
otherwise the series would have died - it had to be flexible to the
time!!! - but that is a different matter entirely.

Octopussy is a class film, not everyones cup of tea, but a top film
nonetheless.

Hope that wasn't too mad :)

Engage wistful mode.

*sigh*

I loved watching the Octopussies trashing Kamal's men. Brought back fond
memories of the St.Trinian's Sixth Form on manoeuvres....

I'll be predictable and say that I'm a Connery Bond fan, and have
never had much for Moore's portrayal of 007. BUT... I think that aside
from TSWLM, OP was Moore's finest.
And speaking of Moore, I'll give him credit. He's a damn fine actor,
even within the confines of a character like Bond. Remember TSWLM, when
Anya is revealing how much she knows about Bond to Rog, and when she
mentions that he was once married, Moore's face does this thing that's
gold. It was the kind of pain in the eyes that we saw for a second in
Bogart's eyes in Casablanca, when Sam played it again.
