They were specially made for him by Morelands (I think that was the
name) of Grosvenor Street, London. Very strong, with three distinctive
gold bands at the base

In the anicent parchments of <366e33aa...@news.tstonramp.com>, the
one known as Daric Priest <dpr...@tstonramp.com> wrote something
vaguely similar to this:

They're not 'a brand' as such, and I don't think the tobacco is ever
named, but it's from a shop in London somewhere. I'm sure someone can
find the name. His cigarettes have three gold bands on them. He uses a
Ronson "battered" gold lighter. He now smokes filtered cigarettes, I
believe, and cut down before Thunderball (no TB jokes, please!).

Yours,

Peredur.

Ian Fleming smoked handmade cigarettes made by Morland & Co in New Bond
Street, London W1. (no longer there) He passed the habit to OO7.

They were officially called James Bond No.1, The Exclusive Balkan
Cigarette, also known as The Three Rings. They were presented in handmade
royal blue and gold boxes.

If you take it "by the book" then James Bond later switched to special
low-tar cigarettes, more precisely in John Gardners "For special
services" from 1982.

"Bond quietly lit one of his special low-tar cigarettes, originally
made for him by Morelands of Grosvenor Street and now produced - after
much discussion and bending of rules - by H. Simmons of Burlington
Arcade: the earliest known cigarette manufacturers in London. This
firm even agreed to retain the distinctive three gold rings - together
with their own silhouette trademark - on each of the specially
produced cigarettes, and Bond felt not a little honoured that he was
the only customer who could coax personalised cigarettes from
Simmons."
- "For Special Services" pages 31-32.

Do any of these firms really exist and can you actually buy the cigarettes?
I'm going down to London next week, and a pack of Bond style cigarettes
would make for an ideal souvenir/ Christmas present for a friend.

Morlands was a real shop but closed down some twenty five years ago. I've been
told on good authority that the closest cigarette in flavour to the Three Gold
Rings is thew French smoke GITANES. I smoke forty of them a day and they
certainly haven't done me any harm.

Nonsense - you'd be 13 feet tall if you'd not smoked them

H. Simmons should still be there; it was last time I was in London.
Burlington Arcade is just of Picadilly Circus. (Bought a couple of cartons
myself.) Morland's is long-gone.

Ugh. Gitanes is the woman's version of Gauloise, which is only passable in
its unfiltered version, which itself is a weak copy of Simon Arzt No. 7. I
would guess, due to the high Balkan yinidge content of 007's smokes, that
the Balkan Sobranie would come the closest.

Forty of those a day should effectively cut down on your tuba-playing or
balloon-blowing-up abilities.

:-)

Is it Morland or Moreland? I've seen it spelled both ways.
