Here is an observation of mine that I think is true..has anyone else
noticed (or is it well-known anyway)?

In the Bond films The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker, there are two
similar scenes (the 'Spy..'one involves the Lotus Esprit and a fish
dropped from its window) in which Bond's spectacular antics are witnessed
close-hand by a guy who then looks at his wine bottle as if to say "I've
had too much..."

I reckon the chap in question is 'Hitchhiker' author Douglas Adams.

This is one of the feew pieces of trivia I worked out for myself. I'm
rather proud of it.

His appearance is not that surprising. He was script editor for the BBC TV
series Doctor Who and had been involved in drama at least since his
Footlights days at Cambridge.

He was also in For Your Eyes Only, if you really want to know. The
producers decided to put him (whoever he may be) in as a sort of on-going
joke.

Thankyou!!! Thankyou!!! Thankyou!!! Thankyou!!! You're absolutely right,
that's it. It's been haunting me for years. I knew that I knew who it was
and I just couldn't place my finger on it.

Douglas Adams did an interview in the late '80's and I think he said that
he'd had cameo's in several famous feature films.

You're a genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The identity of the man in question is one of the great Bond movie
mysteries (he's also in FYEO). I suppose he does look a little like
Douglas Adams, but I don't think it is. Also, I fail to see any connection
between Adams and the Bond movies, especially as he didn't get involved in
Doctor Who until 1978 (after TSWLM) and was an unknown jobbing writer
before then. And I'm sure that if it was him then it would have been
mentioned in an interview with him, somewhere!

If this is true, you have made a great discovery. This character has been
discussed and debated repeatedly in alt.fan.james-bond. On the other
hand, because it has been discussed so much and Adams is relatively
famous, why hasn't anyone ever noticed or mentioned it before? Can anyone
say it is definately Douglas Admas or that it just looks like him?

Oh, *everyone* always says "Hey, look, it's Douglas Adams!". I think not.
The guy does look a lot like Adams looks *now*, but much less like he
looked in the late 70s.

Of course, the other drunk in MR *is* Alfie Bass. :-)

I don't remember Neil Gaiman mentioning anything about this in "Don't
Panic," but then it's been years since I read that book.

Douglas Adams is not that unusual looking. Gaiman, however, mentions that
he is very tall. Does that match the bond-background person?

Even if Douglas Adams told me himself that he was in the Bond movies I
wouldn't believe him. I was at a lecture he gave in 1983 or 1984 where he
told the cookies under the newspaper story claiming to be the guy who eats
a strangers cookies thinking he is eating his own.

Just for the completists (like anyone reads alt.fan pages anymore)

The 'drunk guy' is played by Victor Tourjansky, and assistant director.
