David Bowie revealed his past history with Bond at a question and
answer session in Riverside Studios, Hammersmith for the launch of his
new album today.

Bowie, 56, told fans and press that he once turned down the role of
being a Bond villain. Although he did not mention it by name, he was
referring to "A View To A Kill" which reportedly suffered late budget
cuts and casting changes.

As well as saying he did not like the Bond films, he revealed he also
turned down the offer of performing an opening theme:

"I was asked to do both, but to be honest I haven`t watched a James
Bond film since Sean Connery was in them. I don`t really like them."

That's a shame -- I think he'd be great as a villain, and as the theme
song perfomer.

Well, I guess you guys can stop recommending him then.

Normally I'd agree, but not if it means we'd be denied Walken's gloriously
insane villain in AVTAK.

I like his work but his part in AVTAK was more like a villain from the TV
show Get Smart.

James, then Rich:

As the latter, maybe, but Bowie hasn't had the most distinguished of acting
careers - and that's putting it mildly. He looks interesting, but IMO he's
a pretty ropy actor, and like Mick Jagger, Madonna, and several other
singers-turned-actors, his charisma seems to evaporate the second he appears
on a movie screen.

Although it's been a while, Gene Simmons of Kiss does a good villain.
Frankly, I'd rather watch him than listen to his songs.

Good call! Paul Baack and I saw him in Michael Crichton's "Runaway" with
Tom Selleck (circa 1983), and the little killer robots. Simmons was
convincingly dangerous.

And he didn't even play the bass to do so.

How about Johnny Rotten or Iggy Pop as Bond villains?

I don't know - Iggy's good at playing eccentrics, but I'm not sure he could
be threatening enough, and have you seen Rotten / Lydon's acting in the
movie 'Order of Death'? It ain't pretty.

Mind you, I think Iggy could do a great Bond theme.

He'd be _different_ at least. Not the same image you visualize when you think
of Bond villains.

I don't think he's any worse than Joe Don Baker (the only thing I hate about
TLD; he works in GE, not as Whitaker).

Warren Zevon was reportedly a fan of the Bond films. I would have sincerely
loved to hear what he might have come up with for a theme song. His biting
lyrics and sardonic wit and gravelly voice would have been a really
interesting choice.

I have this Italian crime film under the title of CORRUPT. I think
Lydon is engagingly oddball in it. He'd certainly work a in
weirdo henchman capacity.

Indeed, and I always thought that the string quartet intro to his album 'Bad
Luck Streak in Dancing School' was a very cinematic piece - I think Zevon
could have come up with something which was both classy and unexpected.

It's been a few years since I last saw it. My main memories are of one
scene in which Lydon throws a rather unconvincing strop, and another in
which he appears shirtless - God, was he out of shape even then. Perhaps I
should give it another whirl, because I seem to remember that the premise at
least was interesting.

I'm a huge fan of Italian exploitation cinema, and the Poliziotteschi
genre happens to be one of my favourites. One tends to adjust
one's standards in those situations, but it is an interesting film.
Keitel is pretty good and even Leonard Mann turns in a decent
performance, but I'm inclined to agree Lydon wouldn't work as a
lead villain.

He's certainly made a few bad choices, but I liked his performances in
Labyrinth and Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I think the problem is
that there are a lot of singers that you think "Wow, I'd like to see
them take a shot at a Bond song" but the execution is always kind of
different. I mean, while I don't hate the theme, when I heard they
picked Madonna I thought "This is going to be fabulous. She's going to
come up with some great, sexy Bond theme." Instead, she came up with
one that worked OK with the credits but not necessarily one that stays
with you.

As another example, I'm a huge Duran Duran fan and, while I like the
AVTAK theme, it was hardly the best thing they ever did. Same thing
for GE -- shoulda been better than it was. IMO, the big names stumble
more often than they succeed.

Ugh, let's stick to the more "high profile" actors playing Bond villians. I
love that so many seasoned thespians seem to be thrilled to participate in a
Bond film. I'm surprised by Bowie's comments considering some for the
dreck he has starred in over the years. But, too each their own...and I
wasn't dying for a Bowie Bond song anyway. Now Sting....that would be
cooler...a Police reunion doing a Bond song...even cooler.

Speaking of, I'd really like to see some modern bands make a cover album of
classic Bond tunes. I don't think this has been done has it?

I understand what you are saying, and I do agree. But I'm not saying that a
Zevon Bond theme would have definitely been great, what I am saying is that
it *definitely* would have been interesting.
