Did that building actually exist and if so, is it still in Vegas.

Anyone anything to add

Funny you should phrase it that way ...

The hotel in Las Vegas used for the Whyte House was know as the International
in the '60 and '70s. It's now the Hilton.

However, the building never existed as it appears on film. That is, a matte
painter added extra floors to the top giving the International a penthouse it
never had.

Since then the Hilton has added on to the building in reality, but instead of
up, they expanded out, making two of the three "arms" of the hotel longer.

Yes. I was in Las Vegas just three or four
weeks ago, and as soon as I saw the Hilton I
immediately recognized it as the "Whyte House".
A very cool sight for a Bond fan to see!

What struck me the most, was that the Hilton
is more or less isolated from the rest of the
casinos along the famous strip. The Hilton is
almost at the very north end of the strip, but
not on the strip itself -- it is actually a (very
long) block east of the strip. There are no
other casinos adjacent to the Hilton, just empty
land on either side of it. This is what I found
odd, since in the film Diamonds Are Forever,
Bond uses his cable-firing pistol to travel from
his penthouse in the *neighboring* casino/hotel
to the Whyte House. This could not be
achieved today, because there simply are no
buildings next to the Hilton. And wasn't Bond
staying in the Tropicana? The Tropicana is
on the very south end of the strip, several
miles away from the Hilton.

Also of some interest to Bond fans would be
"Casino Royale" which is on the strip just
across the street from The Mirage. I didn't
go in, but I did get my picture taken in front
of the building. And in the old downtown
area, now known as the Fremont Street
Experience, you can see the neon smoking
cowboy which Bond passes while being
chased through the streets of Vegas by the
local police (got my picture taken under the
neon cowboy as well). That entire city block
is now covered by a computer controlled
electronic dome and the streets are open to
pedestrians only, so re-creating this classic
car chase is also not possible today.

PS - I forgot to mention that when you are
inside the Hilton, for $5 you can ride the
Diamonds Are Forever service elevator.
After you step in, sleeping gas fills the
chamber and your unconscious body is
dragged to a neary construction site where
you are placed inside concrete piping.
A very fun experience and a must-do for
any Bond fan!

D'oh - just remembered, Felix mentions that no one can see Willard
Whyte, but he could get him into see the President. Bond says to Felix
that "This isn't the real White House" - further compounding that
they're staying at the Whyte House.

I do not believe this is correct. He used the cable to get to the top
of the building, around the overhang of the penthouse.

Now I would almost enjoy this. As long as your the men who "drag" you
do not take the dentist's advantage of your position.

Thanks, Richard! I stand corrected. Amazing that
I've watched DAF literally dozens of times and never
picked up on that.

I thought the method that he used to get tot he penthouse was by: Walking
out of his window and taking a ride to the top on the roof of an elevator.
Once the elevator reached the top he was right under the penthouse. He then
used the cable to get on top of the penthouse and then into the John he
went.

I think thats the way it went.....
