Meerut - "I will return only after teaching a lesson to
the enemy" were the last words of Major Manoj Talwar as
he took leave from his mother on June 1 and left for
Siachen, where he was killed in Pakistani firing. And
that he did. Major Talwar was leading a patrol in the
world's highest and most expensive battlefield when he
fell prey to Pakistani firing after putting up a
valiant defence yesterday, defence sources said here
today, reports PTI.
A third generation army officer, Major Talwar had been
selected for both National Defence Academy (NDA) and
Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune, but opted
for NDA as he wanted an "active combat role", his
shocked but proud father Captain (Retd) P.N. Talwar
told PTI. Commissioned into the ninth battalion of
Mahar Regiment in 1991, Major Talwar served at several
"hot" sectors in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast
before opting for a Siachen posting, his father said.
Army authorities in New Delhi said Major Talwar's body
was being brought back and his cremation would be held
at Meerut tomorrow.
