MLA MURDER: PRIME ACCUSED NABBED IN DUBAI

By Our Staff Reporter
The Hindu

Bangalore, April 6 - In a major breakthrough, the Corps
of Detectives (CoD) has arrested Dilip Arjun Naik in
connection with the murder of Karwar MLA, Vasanth
Kamalakar Asnotikar.

Naik was arrested from his hideout in Dubai and brought
by the CoD to Bangalore on Wednesday night. A special
team of CoD officials, headed by the Deputy Inspector-
General of Police, Mr. B. G. Jyothiprakash Mirji, and
comprising officers of Bangalore City police and Coastal
Security Force of Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada
districts, was camping in Dubai for nearly a fortnight
after it managed to trace Dilip Naik there.

The CoD escorted Naik to Karwar where he is scheduled to
be produced before the magistrate in connection with the
murder that took place on February 19.

The Home Minister, Mr. Mallikarjuna Kharge, confirmed the
arrest but refused to provide any details.

Asnotikar (42) was gunned down by motorcycle-borne
miscreants, who were later identified as contract
killers, when he was standing in front of the Daivayagna
Kalyana Mantapa of Dhobi Ghat Road in Karwar where his
daughter's marriage reception was to be held the
following day.

A badly injured Asnotikar was administered first aid at a
local hospital but he died enroute to Manipal. Asnotikar
had apprehended threat to his life and even lodged a
police complaint. The local police had provided a gunman
but the MLA had gone to the kalyana mantapa that evening
without being escorted by his gunman.

The State Government ordered a CoD inquiry a day after
the murder. Soon after, special teams were despatched to
Mumbai where the trail of the hired killers led to. Local
police and the CoD had suspected the hand of Dilip Naik
as the Karwar MLA and Naik were not on good terms. Naik,
who owned several commercial establishments in Karwar,
was reportedly engaged in a ''fight'' with Asnotikar to
gain control over the powerful Karwar Port and Dockyard
Employees' Society.

The CoD has stated that a suitable rewards would be given
to all those responsible for the arrest of Naik. It had
announced a reward of Rs. 2 lakhs for information leading
to the arrest of Dilip Naik.

Our Karwar Correspondent reports:

Dileep Naik was remanded to police custody till April 17
by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Karwar, Mr. V. G.
Sawarkar. He was produced before the court under tight
security at about 7 p.m. Heavy crowds gathered near the
court.
