FILM WORLD LOSES VERSATILE MUSIC DIRECTOR

Bangalore, Feb 5 (DH News Service) - Veteran South Indian
music director T G Lingappa (70) died of cardiac arrest
early this morning in his Chennai residence.

Mr Lingappa had directed music for 150 films over a
period of 40 years in Kannada, Tamil and Telugu films. In
Kannada, he had won the best music director award from
the government of Karnataka for scoring music to the
historical Kannada film Srikrishnadevaraya, starring Dr
Rajkumar and Bharati.

Mr Lingappa had introduced several young music talents to
Kannada film world, including the renowned female
playback singer P Susheela.

He is survived by his wife, one son and two daughters.
His son Kishore is also in the music field.

He first scored music for Modal Thedi in Kannada. Mr
Lingappa has scored music for all of Panthulu's films
numbering more than 25 of them including Kittur
Chennamma, School Master, Ratnagiri Rahasya and
Srikrishnadevaraya. His tunes in Babruvahana like the
ones sung by Dr Rajkumar - Aaradhisuve madhanaari...and
Yaaru seledaru ninna.... are still popular. Thayi
Devaru...sung by singer late Kalinga Rao was another
popular tuned to music by Mr Lingappa for the film Sati
Shakti.

Mr Lingappa's career in Tamil cinema started with
Mohanasundaram in the early 1950s and scored music for
other Kannada films including Bhaktha Prahlada and the
more recent Dr Rajkumar-Madhavi-Geetha starrer Shruthi
Seridaga. Mr Lingappa's Tamil hits include films like
Sabaash Meena , Thanga Malai Ragasiyam and Kalyanam
Panniyum Brahmachari .

Mr Lingappa has composed music for Prabhat Shishu Vihara
besides scoring music for some of Dr Rajkumar's private
devotional albums. Mr Lingappa was also a recipient of
the Kalaimamani award instituted by the Tamil Nadu
government.

Chief Minister S M Krishna has expressed grief over the
death of Mr Lingappa. ''He was a genius in his field. In
his death not only has the Kannada film world lost a
music maestro but also the entire music world has lost a
doyen'', the chief minister said in his message.

Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce President K C N
Chandrashekar also mourned the death of Mr Lingappa. Mr
Lingappa had cast a spell on Kannada film viewers for
four decades with his melodious tunes, Mr Chandrashekar
said in a statement.

Here we go again. At least I am assured of a laugh a day when I see these
