Second autopsy confirms Natasha fell to death
New Delhi, March 19 (PTI & DHNS)
With the second autopsy endorsing that Natasha Singh, estranged
daughter-in-law of senior Congress leader Natwar Singh, had died due to
a fall and had no gunshot or stab injuries, police are now hinging their
probe mainly on the deceased's mobile phone details.
Natasha, 31-year-old freelance photographer who was found dead on the
terrace of Hyatt Hotel in South Delhi on Sunday morning leaving behind
two sons, was cremated here today.
A team of three doctors, which conducted the second autopsy last
evening, has concluded that the death had occurred due to
"cranio-cerebral damage and shock consequent upon multiple injuries." Dr
P C Dixit and Dr S K Khanna of Maulana Azad Medical College and Dr D N
Bhardwarj of AIIMS said the injuries were "ante-mortem" and "fresh
before death and could have been caused by blunt force/surface impact
and are possible in a fall from height." "There are no firearm stab
injuries on the body," the panel said after the autopsy, conducted
following a police request to clear all "suspicions".
Significantly, both the post-mortem exercises have been videographed to
allay any suspicions that may arise in the future, police sources said.
While Natasha's movements just before her death at around 2 am are being
verified, Delhi Police are conducting a thorough examination of her
mobile phone details such as the time she sent the SMS messages and when
the last one was sent and who received it, they said.
"A substantial portion of the probe hinges on the mobile phone," they
told PTI.
Investigators are particularly trying to verify whether the SMS messages
were sent by Natasha herself or not.
"We have conducted a lot of exercise on the SMS issue to unravel details
which could be crucial to crack the case," the sources said.
Investigations have revealed that Natasha mostly used to communicate
with her friends and acquaintances by SMS and hardly used to talk over
mobile.
Interestingly, Natasha had put her phone at her residence off the hook
before going out at around midnight on Saturday for the last time, they
said.
Police will also record statement of Natasha's husband Jagat Singh, who
has already been questioned "orally" thrice.
The statements of Natasha's friends and acquaintances will also be
recorded, police sources said.
THE FUNERAL: The mortal remains of Natasha were today consigned to the
flames as per Hindu rites amidst chanting of hymns.
The funeral pyre was lit by her husband Jagat Singh, son of Mr Natwar
Singh, at the Lodhi Road crematorium at 1330 hrs. Mr Natwar Singh, his
family members and Natasha's parents and brothers — Sharif and Arshad
—were present during the funeral.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi visited the house of Natwar Singh in
Vasant Vihar around noon to express her condolences to the bereaved
family. Mr Jyotiraditya Scindia and Mr Jaipal Reddy went to the house to
pay their homage.
The body was taken to the residence of Natawar Singh after it was handed
over to the family this morning by the authorities at the Safdarjung
Hospital, where two autopsies were conducted to ascertain the cause of
death.
