ITV have taken the decision to stop making Endeavour, the Inspector Morse
prequel, after series 9 which is being filmed at present.
Much as I'd have liked them to continue right up to just before we first met
John Thaw as Morse in The Dead of Jericho in 1987, I think Endeavour has had
a good run for its money and it's about time to end it before it becomes
stale.
At the current rate of passage of time in Endeavour-world, I think it would
take a looong time to get to 1987, and Shaun Evans is already almost as old
as John Thaw was when he started playing Morse, although the character is
about 10-15 years younger.
I do hope series 9 manages to answer some of the unanswered questions about
how the Morse of "Endeavour" changed into the Morse of "Inspector Morse" -
more world-weary, more pedantic and didactic, more highbrow in his musical
tastes.
I'm sure Colin Dexter would have been delighted to see how much mileage ITV
has managed to make out of his 13 novels.
