Maybe he doesn't have a middle name. Unlike the USA, there's less of a
tradition of giving people middle names. For example, none of my
grandparents (born 1905 - 1915) had/have middle names. I think the tradition
of giving middle names went into a decline around that time: in the late
1800s the tradition was to use a family surname (eg mother's maiden name) or
a famous person's surname (eg politician's); in recent times most middle
names are conventional forenames that could alternatively be used as first
names. But in between, the fashion seeme to die out.

How old is Morse supposed to be? I presume he'd have to retire from the
police at 60, so that takes us back to about 1940 at the earliest.

In the books Morse was born in 1930. I have never heard mention of a middle
name.

Morse's middle name is Endeavour. I can't remember which book it's
in, but it is definitely there.

Does that mean that his first name is Inspector? :-)

No, Morse's first name is Endeavour. It was revealed in Death Is Now My
Neighbour.
