A comment on uk.media.tv.misc:

"I did hear a review on either Front Row or Newsnight Review, and the
opinion there was they should keep the Hathaway character but ditch the
actor that played him."

So they've come to the same conclusion as us!

Hmmmmmmm. So he wasn't very charismatic on film?

I thought he came across all right from your reviews.

In my first reaction (an hour or so after the show was aired), I wrote
about Hathaway: "his sergeant", meaning Hathaway (also meaning Laurence
Fox), "has all the abilities to become a new Inspector, if not a chief
inspector." I still stand behind this 'verdict'. He may have to do
something about his diction (and there a director should correct him, if
necessary), but Fox made everything possible of this new sergeant, and
that was a lot, considering the audience who know Lewis already about 19
years but who have still to get accustomed to a freshly new character in
the person of Hathaway/Fox. As Kevin Whately doesn't play Lewis as a
second generation Morse, but still stays Lewis (thank God for that), so
doesn't Fox portray Hathaway as a new born Lewis, but as an other
sergeant with his /own/ characteristics. It is a role not yet fully
developed, but give both the actor and the charactor time to grow,
please!

In 'Jericho' John Thaw was not quite Morse as we later knew him and
Kevin Whately was still a bit bleak as Lewis, but they had the time to
progress.
They shouldn't 'sack' Fox because some people suggested, that he doesn't
play the role of Hathaway right. It would be pure nonsense. He is a good
actor, give him time to get to know /alter ego/!
