Friend Calls Mrs. Hartman 'A Very Troubled Person'
By Jeffrey Wells
Actress Cassandra Peterson傭est known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark揺as
been a close friend of Phil Hartman since they performed together in
Hollywood's Groundlings comedy troupe in the early 1980s. In an effort to
make sense of the tragic news of Hartman's shooting death用ossibly by his
wife, Brynn, who later committed suicide謡e contacted Peterson at her
California home this morning.
The actress revealed that she spoke with Hartman last week for about an
hour. "We talked only about death and dying," she recalled. "His father had
recently passed away from Alzheimer's, and a friend of ours had died
recently too. Phil said, 'I just hope when I die, it'll be quick. I just
feel like hugging my children every five minutes. I'm so happy I'm alive.'"
Peterson said that the Hartman marriage was not always a happy one: "They
fought a lot. I don't know what the problems were. I have suspicions. But at
the moment, they seemed to be doing fine."
Asked if alcohol or drugs may have been involved, Peterson said, "I don't
want to say. But it had nothing to do with Phil being a bad person or doing
anything wrong. Phil didn't have a weird secret life揺e was a clean slate
and a great guy."
The actress minced no words about Brynn Hartman. "She was a very troubled
person with a lot of problems," said Peterson. "When Phil told me he was
going to marry her [in 1987], I tried my damnedest to talk him out of it.
Phil and I didn't speak for almost two years because of that. [Mrs. Hartman]
had many problems. I did not like her. She put a serious damper on our
friendship. I had a hard time continuing to have a relationship with Phil. I
am not Brynn's best friend." Peterson admitted that not everybody held the
same opinion of Mrs. Hartman: "I'm the only one of [Phil's] friends who
didn't think well of Brynn."
Asked about a possible motive for the suspected murder-suicide, Peterson
said, "The only thing I have are suspicions. I can't say what they are. I
thought something bad might happen one day with their relationship. But I
would never have dreamt this in a million, billion years. I would have
dreamt divorce悠 didn't think it was a great relationship."
Peterson noted that the weapon that killed Hartman might have been his own.
"Phil had a gun," she said. "I sure as hell won't have one in my house. I
hope she shot him in his sleep. I hope he wasn't staring down the barrel of
a gun."
