It was a Stern show original. I saw an interview with Elton John in which
he stated that he writes the music for songs in a matter of minutes. As
for the lyrics, I don't know if John made them up on the spot or if they
were written beforehand. But I'm sure the music was improvised.

This story has been on the air MANY times...
When stern had his synidcated weekend show (lasted a VERRY
short time) he had elton john on, and the gang wrote a song
parody to "Dont let the sun go down on me", and they asked
elton to sing it. Instead, elton wrote a original tune to it,
and GAVE it to Howard. The song is played pretty often at
6:00 when the show opens.
