Republican leadership, Limbaugh and Cheney, are counting on the
fact that their Doublethinking (see Orwell) dittoheads don't
notice that now they are arguing that government is actually
working so well that any competition from it will bankrupt
private HMOs.
By the late 1970s memories of successful government programs
from the 1930s to 1950s were fading, so Reagan's apocryphal and
made-up stories of the Cadillac-driving welfare mother were able
to gain traction. But if health care reform passes and works,
people will realize that the "government doesn't work" line is
BS. Since it's Conservatism before America, they are hysterical.

over ten years.

The Congressional Budget Office has analyzed the Republican
alternative health care reform bill -- and concludes the measure
would cut the deficit but actually grow the number of uninsured
Americans.
The full analysis is attached below.
CBO says the GOP provisions would cut the deficit by $68
billion over ten years, less than the Democratic bill, which cuts
the deficit $104 billion over the same time frame.
The CBO also says the Republican plan would leave 52 million
people uninsured in 2019, more than the 46 million uninsured
today (the percentage of Americans without insurance, about 17
percent, would remain basically unchanged, CBO says.)

supports a massive healthcare reform bill in the US House of
Representatives that may come to a vote this Saturday, but the
voting can't stop there, AMA President J. James Rohack, MD, said
today.
To enact meaningful reform, Dr. Rohack warned that the House also
must pass a separate bill on Medicare reimbursement that would
avert a 21.2% pay cut for physicians scheduled to take effect
January 1. Otherwise, Medicare patients may not be able to find a
physician willing to treat them.
"These are separate bills that must be passed together," said Dr.
Rohack.
The AMA and much of the rest of organized medicine has supported
Democratic-style healthcare reform legislation in large part
because they expected it to rewrite the controversial sustainable
growth rate (SGR) formula for setting Medicare rates.

Arm-twisting. Whether the AARP's management approved it or not, its
membership's support of it is not at all clear. And you can find plenty
of doctors who want no part of this, either, and the AMA's political
office doesn't speak for all of them.
