I watched a show today, the Secret Life of Chaos by Jim Al-Khalili. An interesting point is that he redid Hofstadter's demonstration concerning pointing a camera at a screen which is displaying the camera's output producing video feedback. I expected a nod to be given to Hofstadter, but there wasn't.

Perhaps, Hofstadter is a mere figgy ment ??

Hofstadter was not the first guy to do that. Many, many people have set
up such feedback loops. I remember tripping out on the recursive
reflections in the mirrors at Sears. That was long before I read
Hofstadter for the first time.

OK - well, to heck with any sort of credit to Hofstadter then.

Also, the mirror recursion is quite a bit different than video feedback.

In that the mirror deal is just pure optical. Each repetition diminishes because you lose photons each time. You can't get a perfect recursion because your head blocks the view. You can get a perfect recursion wih a camera and that's when you get all the weird patterns as seen in Hof's books.
