Show #97 - Death is a Company Policy

The first show of season five features a revised main title with no
teaser. Much of the show is concerned with the efforts of local thug
Piro Manoa (Michael Ansara) to create the impression of corruption in
the Five-O/D.A.'s team who are investigating him. The means by which
this is done is extremely complicated, especially if it was all planned
years in advance, as is suggested. (It's possible it was done by Manoa's
"plant", Manicote's assistant Chris Lahani (George Chakiris), but on the
other hand, there is no evidence to suggest that Lahani has the kind of
specialized computer knowledge which could accomplish this.) The plot is
stretched beyond belief towards the end with the mysterious corporation
Bryce Halsey (for whom Manoa is a front man) sending a helicopter to
assassinate both Manoa and Lahani. Not only that -- how does McGarrett
know where Lahani is going to meet Manoa? Laraine Stephens plays Manoa's
bitchy accountant "Miss Simpson." When Manoa tries to persuade her to
join him in a dip in his pool she resists and he says, "Put the numbers
away and think about me as a man." In one of the series' great put-
downs, she replies, "I already have, and I became violently ill." At the
beginning of the show Wilfred Keale (later "Truck") is seen uncredited
as one of Manoa's goons (he is addressed as "Moe"). Richard Morrison is
the weasly informer Runny Gross and Jo Pruden is almost unrecognizable
as his girl friend Angie Caroll. Karl Albrecht from Interpol is
mentioned. The main item of interest for the show is the trivia revealed
as the police department's "iron brain" computer is used to investigate
various members of the Five-O team as well as Manicote's office to make
sure they are "clean." (McG says that even the "history of sexual
behavior" will be included, to which Danno asks, "Do you want bachelors
to sign [a release] too, Steve?" McG replies, You got something to hide,
Danno?") McGarrett was born March 10, 1927 in Metropolitan Hospital and
weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces. His measles immunization was done by M.
Stevens, M.D. (an in-joke referring to Morton?). In 1944 we was
attending Valley High School. Some of his marks were: Biology - B;
Journalism - A; Drafting - C; Geometry - A minus; American History - B
minus; Phys Ed - A. Edward D. ("Duke") Lukela was born June 19, 1926. He
has had Badge #260 since 2-11-62. He is 5'10", weighs 175 pounds and has
blood type A, Rh negative. On one of Duke's ID cards, there is an
emergency contact person, Joseph Meniosa, 17469 Ahonai Place, Honolulu
with a phone number 277-9277, which is the same number as appears on
some paperwork for Paul Drummond, who works for Manicote. Danno's credit
card numbers are 06491351 0109 for Visa/Chargex and 4024 622 350128 for
MasterCharge (expiry date of 02/73 or 75 on the latter) -- the logos for
both companies are obscured. New Five-O team member Ben Kokua (Al
Harrington) is said to be "Polynesian."All of this is quite fascinating,
but I find that the all-pervasive computer knows a bit too much (even
more than McGarrett does usually!).

Where the hell did McGarrett grow up as a kid, anyway? I'm sure it wasn't
in Hawaii ... was it somewhere on the mainland?

In the climax, it appears McGarrett and Danno have caused a
helicopter with assassins aboard to explode (presumbably by hitting the
gas tanks or something). In reality, it's a stock shot of a missile
exploding a drone airplane. The same shot (but more of it) appears in The
Man From UNCLE (episode 3, The Quadripartite Affair).

Two ironies in McGarrett's school record.
1. He got an A in journalism? Given his disdain for reporters, it
seems rather odd he would have applied himself so throughly in school to
this subject. Even when a reporter plays by McG's rules (e.g. Cry, Lie),
McG treats him like dirt.
2. Only a C in drafting. Considering all the time McG spends in front
of transparent maps (e.g. F.O.B. Honolulu, part 2, but there are many
others), it seems odd that McG wouldn't have done better in drafting
class.
I have to admit I didn't look at all the school records, etc., that
closely. But if we assume all of this is correct, that means McG's father
was killed in 1940 (based on Number One With a Bullet, part II), he
assumed the Five-O job at age 32, first met up with Wo Fat at age 41,
suffered polio in 1937 (Once Upon A Time, part II) and that McG is 5
years younger than actor Jack Lord (g).

I don't think so. I got the impression that Lahani was one of many
plants who would perform their duties (in Lahani's case, just keeping the
"company" apprised of what was going on in the attorney general's
office. Lahani would do this out of gratitude for his full scholarship
to Harvard.

I thought McGarrett was supposed to be a "Capricorn goat". March 10
would make him a Taurus. Don't think Jack Lord's birth year is 1927,
either.

All were supposed to sign releases and all of the information looked to
me like stuff any good credit agency would know.

Capricorn -- December 22-January 19
I'm very sure the birth certificate said March 10, though it was only on
screen for about 3 frames of the VCR's slow motion.

It probably did, and it's a continuity glitch. In "Blind Tiger" which
aired originally on December 31, it's his birthday, and Jack Lord's
birthday is December 30. I go with Capricorn on that, and the December
birthday. Also another error in the computer file is his height. If he
was only 5'10" he'd be about the same height as Danno instead of being
about 6 or 7 inches taller, and he wouldn't tower head and shoulders above
John Manicote. He's 6'2".

I don't think it's such a stretch. This is an international crime
cartel with a LOT to lose! When they cut their losses, they cut their
losses, big time! Heehee. I just think it's too bad we didn't see more
of Bryce Halsey in subsequent episodes.
