Does LOCKHART have to be British?

It occurred to me the other day that Brad Pitt (whom I actually respect a
great deal) could make a hilarious Lockhart... so pretty, so capable of
pulling off the phony warmth/extreme conceit/somewhat stupid thing...

true... he *almost* pulled off the Irish-Gypsie accent in "Snatch". If I
could see him doing a British accent, I'd be all for it.

Having said that - has JKR stipulated that the entire cast should be
British? The only non-brit I can think of is Warwick Davies... although...
thinking about it... he's probably british too....

Hmmm... brain melting...

Y'know who would make a good Lockheart - Rodger Moore back in his Simon
Templar days.

How about Owen Wilson (Shanghai Noon, Meet the Parents)? He's got the
smile thing down pat.

One does wonder what schools American witches attend. Sounds like
fodder for fan-fiction to me.

Perhaps someplace like Seattle or Vancouver and some of the Profs
would be Amerindians and some would be Asian immigrants. Instead of
Lord V, they'd worry about Bill Gates.

I imagined Lockhart as an American. Having said that, I thought Hugh Grant
would have pulled off the role perfectly; Lockhart certainly seems like some
cross pollination of Hugh Grant and Alan Titchmarsh.

He's definitely British. I used to know someone who frequented the same pub
as him.

well all our wishing about who should get the part is in vain because
Kenneth Branagh has already signed for the role.

Indeed he is. However, Verne "Mini-Me" Troyer (who plays Griphook) is an
American.

I'm very pleased with him too. In fact, we're re-reading COS. Last night was
Chapter 17. I howled just imagining Ken saying those things. So did the kids
when I told them who was going to be Lockhart. My daughter is very impressed
with all the big names that the Potter movie has drawn in.

I think Lockhart works better as English, rather than Scottish, Irish
or American and definately not Welsh (he'd come across too likably
as Welsh).

Having said that, Brad Pitt would have made a superb Lockhart were
he not too young: he can do English (i.e. was excellent in Sleepy Hollow),
so I suppose mid-Atlantic smarm should be well within his capabilities.
I would say Nigel Havers, or someone his age who has similarly "held
on to their looks" would be about right as someone attractive to Witches
in the way Lockhart is. Brad Pitt strikes me as being realistic for
Hermione and similar girls to go goey over, but not the likes
of Molly Weasley.

Actually when reading the books for the first time I saw him as quite
American...a bit young William Shatner type, but with lots of otehr
people thrown in too.

I'd always thought of Lockhart's age being somewhere in the middle, the
same as MWPP and Snape, i.e. late 30s. Maybe a little bit older.
I'm not sure Brad Pitt could do the "look at me I'm so amazing"
brainless git too well.

Interesting. I'm an American, and Lockhart is one of the few HP
characters that I always "heard" (in my own mind, of course) with a
strong English accent. Dumbledore and Mrs. McMcGonagal would be the
other two.

I was wondering the same thing. If Brad Pitt was in Sleepy Hollow, it was
uncredited and I missed it (not likely!)

By the way, both Brad and Johnny are 38. Plenty old enough for Lockhart, if
you ask me. I suppose they both just look younger.

I thought her only stipulation was that the kids should be British - which I
agree with. It's relatively easy for an adult actor to put on another accent
but it's much much harder for a child actor. My (American) wife is hilarious
when she tries to "do" a British kid's accent.

Andy.

Funny, I thought McGonagall had a strong Scottish accent - perhaps a
bit stronger than the one in the movie, but not as much as Moody. I
shtill shay he should be played by Shean Connery, fer shure :) Oh no ye

Hm, I never considered that, but you're right. I was thinking more of the bald
guy with the funny-looking head from the Mad Max and Weird Science movies. I
can't figure out who he is, though, from imdb.com

Yes! McGonagall *has* to be Scottish. A very refined Edinburgh accent.

Actually, I've never thought of Christopher Lloyd as an Uncle Fester
type. He's just his own oddball character. Think of "Taxi" or "Back to
the Future" - a somewhat wild-eyed, mad-professor type of eccentric...
Whatever, I've always "seen" Mad Eye" as Lloyd. Can't really imagine
him as anyone else.

Now if I can just convince Warner Bros... ;)
