I don't think this is ever explained, but everyone seems to know him by
scar alone. Just curious to know if this is ever explained, because I never
found any info on it.
Hagrid knew about the scar - since it was he who brought the baby to
Dumbledore. Hagrid is not exactly good at keeping things secret (I
shouldn't have said that). Since Voldemort did disappear - one would
want at least some of the story to come out. That it got into Hogwarts -
a History - only underlines the importance of the story. However - you
are correct - we don't have that answer.
We do not about a lot of things that happened between Harry's birth and
his entrance into Hogwarts. One would have to assume that Dumbledore did
keep in touch with the Dursleys since he did know about the conditions
there - but we have no idea on that one either.
There are quite a few unanswered questions about what happened immediately
after Voldy killed the Potters - how did the entire magical community seem
to know about it so quickly? And how did Hagrid know to get there* to rescue
Harry, and what took him so long to get there, collect Harry then arrive at
4PD when McGonagall was there first thing in the morning, and what was Dd
doing all day so he only joined her that evening. How everyone knew about
the scar is another mystery - I can't help but think it's a slight plot
hiccup on JKR's part.
JKR has admitted she didn't explain the events of that day and might cover
that in the "Scottish Book" (her encyclopaedia) but that could be 10 years
off, so lots of time for speculation before then!
*incidentally, Hagrid says in PS/SS that Voldy "took care of yer mum an' dad
an' yer house" (p65, UK paperback ed.) and " "D'yeh think yer parents didn't
leave yeh anything?" "But if their house was destroyed - " "They didn' keep
their gold in the house, boy!..." (p73) suggesting they were living in their
own home when they were killed, not at a friend's house, something that's
been discussed in the past).
I doubt very much Dd "kept in touch" with the Dursleys though - at least, if
the term implies any reciprocity or openness about his communicating with
them, although I guess it's possible Dd watched Harry magically from afar to
be sure he was at least safe. However, he may have reached his conclusions
about how Harry had been brought up just by observing him at Hogwarts: small
for his age, fairly skinny, and completely ignorant of his past. It seems
clear from the books that in terms of communications, Dd left a letter with
Harry when he was dropped off as a baby on the doorstep then nothing till
his howler "remember my last" to Petunia, and meeting them while collecting
Harry in HBP.

But Dumbledore did mention that he knew that Harry's upbringing was less
than what he would have liked somewhere - I am not with my books at this
moment.
RE: Harry's money.
Harry was left a 'trust fund' for his education, in a vault in his name.
Parents usually only do this kind of thing when they have a lot more
money in a family account. Putting money in such a fund is usually a
way to allow it to earn interest without taxes, although JKR never
mentions taxes needed for running the MoM. I believe Dumbledore
mentions that the family was hiding in a place NOT their usual home.
Given that Hagrid was a friend, he might well have been told where they
were hiding, and would be able to find it. We know Sirius and Remus
knew where they were hiding, but none of those could tell anyone else.
My conclusion is that Harry would have inherited a larger amount of
money, and probably another home, if not several, given that James is
mentioned as 'having a lot of money'. But none of that pertained to the
plot as developed.
It appears that Dd ASSUMED much when he left Harry with the Dursleys,
and made an ASS of himself in the end as Harry was poorly treated. I
suspect that he never went beyond checking to see that Harry was still
alive, periodically.

I'm sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.
Hagrid
I see no reason to believe this is so. It is not specifically mentioned.
The money may just as well be the entire Potter Family fortune. By the
time it was mentioned, Harry would have been Lily and James' only heir.
Obviously - such money is kept in vaults as well - since even Sirius
was able to access his money WHILE he was still considered an outlaw to
buy Harry his broom. So was Bellatrix's.
>This may sound like a stupid question, but how is it that everyone knows

Maybe that's it. he wasn't secreted away. Even Vodemort knew Harry
was with his family.

Well, they'd still need their money in hiding, just letting somebody
else buy for them.

Well, in his defense, the last he knew of Petunia, she wanted to be a
witch, and go to Hogwarts sans magic. How would he know she became
ant wizard through jealousies? She should have been happy to take in
Harry, and she knows he's a wizard anyway.
The Daily Prophet hounded everyone who saw Harry Potter prior to his
being secreted away.
Dumbledore politely declined to speak.
Pettigrew probably never took a quick enough look to see it, and dropped
out of sight shortly after. Sirius may have seen, but he dropped out of
sight, too.
McGonagall told the reporters to shove off and leave the poor child alone.
Hagrid was reluctant to speak, until the reporter bought him a few
drinks. Then he sang like a canary.
Harry was seen by wizards are frequent intervals during his childhood,
although he often was not aware of it. A lot of them had known James
and would have recognized him on sight, and I'm sure many of them
noticed the scar.

DD had a finger in it, because Hagrid had custody of Harry's vault key.
When James and Lily died, presumably the usual legal stuff was done
to transfer their money to Harry's vault, and since it would be needed
for school supplies, DD was the logical choice to have custody of it.
The vault may even have had all three names on it originally, with
the parents' names removed when they died.

Harry was also "watched more closely" than he would imagine - and over
the course of ten years, people do talk. Every so often someone would
shake Harry's hand, or wave at him from a distance. Lots of people
knew where he was and what he looked like.
=Tamar
Erego, Hrary was not secreted away. and if everybody knew where he
was, they could easily know about the scar.
In fact, the series opens with Wizards already in the know, and
McGonnagle asking if the rumors were true. Clealry, not much was
being kept secret those missing 24 hours. I wonder what would have
happened if any of those wizards knew Vernon was Harry's Uncle. One
even addressed him, telling him to rejoice. What if he had known who
he was talking to?
Yes, in families with money, the money for school would be separate
from the rest of the legacy, which the heir would recieve later. But,
if this was the case, we probably would have found out about it when
Harry reached the age of majority. It's possible for it to stay in
trust much later than that, but I don't know of a story reason to do
it differently.
That only proves there was an inheritence from his parents - not that it
was an educational trust fund. In fact - we still don't know how
Hogwarts is paid for to begin with.
AS an underage person - Harry's inheritence would have to be held for
him - and it appears to be quite a sum - much larger than is needed for
hogwarts based on the amount that the weasleys have in their vault.
When the story begins, Harry is about as clueless a character as
possible. Up until his eleventh birthday, everything he knows about
himself is a lie. When he gets to school, virtually the entire
student body knows more about him than he does. Even Hermione has
spotted his name in one of her books.
Two actually, and is a bit surprised he never researched himself. Has
any among us never Googled themselves?
Well - the biggest problem is that Google is apparently a muggle
phenomenon - as they had nothing about Harry Potter on it until after
the books were released (lol). In fact - before the books - it appears
that Harry Potter didn't exist!
Since Harry had only access to muggle information - he would not have
found much about himself that he didn't already know. He might have
found out that his parents were not killed in a car crash though.
I think he meant that Harry would search for his name in the books as a
regular person _now_ would google him/herself. I mean, if he is famous,
then perhaps there is a book that names him. I guess he didn't think
about that.
> I don't think this is ever explained, but everyone seems to know him by

After LV battle no. 1, Harry wasn't exactly secreted away. He was
placed in the Muggle world, which surprisingly enough, was often
overlooked by the most dangerous of the magic world. If he really
needed to be kept secret after that, the Dursleys wouldn't have ever
let Harry out of the cupboard. Basically, it was hiding him by keeping
him in plain sight, and depending on the protection charms.
Anyway, famous people, muggle or not, often have a certain vibe about
them, and the scar is a dead tell giveaway.

It doesn't have to have been set up as a trust fund - it's a
/de facto/ trust fund because it was kept for Harry with the
idea that he would need it for school supplies.
>In fact - we still don't know
>how Hogwarts is paid for to begin with.
It's pretty clear that Hogwarts doesn't charge tuition as such.
Even when DD visits Tom Riddle, there's no mention of tuition
fees, only money for school uniforms and supplies. The Weasleys
don't have to pay tuition either, they just have to get books
and cauldrons and so on. Hogwarts appears to be either
government funded (thus MoM meddling, board of directors, etc.)
or somehow independently wealthy because of magic (real gems
in the hourglasses?).
Even though the grounds are extensive and Hagrid grows some
plants, and there are probably as many house elves as students,
food has to come from somewhere and the headmaster somehow pays
the professors. (Lupin gets better robes, for instance.)
We know Slughorn deals in unicorn tail hair on the side and
he probably sells a line of potions too.

The Weasleys are experienced at finding bargains and Harry
buys everything brand new. That runs into money. Harry is
not broke at the end but he's already considering making the
money stretch in an earlier book. (Also JKR said he buys
gifts for people that she didn't happen to specify in the
books).

After Hagrid told Harry he was famous, Harry was too busy. He read
his schoolbooks at home but they didn't mention him. Hermione told
him he was in all the books, but fame was not pleasant for Harry.
He wasn't the type to pore over his old newspaper clippings, so
to speak, and With Snape atacking him verbally every time they met,
if he even thought about looking up the books Hermione said he was
in, the thought probably passed very quickly, if only because
Snape would have taken it as proof that Harry was a glory-hog.

I believe Hermione mentions that there are several books in the school
library about him, or mentioning him. It would be very surprising if
there weren't, given the celebrations that took place when Voldemort
appeared to be dead.

Yup. If I found out I'm famous in a whole hidden world, I'd be
interested in what I'm famous for, what is said about me, and if
anybody's making money off of me through merchandise and stuff. and
with everybody knowing Harry Potter, he could easily ask at any Diagon
Alley Bookshop if there's anything on him.
As DD said after the fight with Quirrelmort, everybody knows it by
now.
Surely some GHer saw V enter, saw the explosion, and saw a scared
Harry being spirited away by Hagrid.

Flitwick goes through the ROR, summoning various item hidden there,
looking for resale value. He sells them on Wizards Bay.
I hate to disagree with you but the statement specifically included "up
to age 11" If you follow the thread in other posts - you will find that
to be true. WE knew nothing about Harry much before he turned 11 -
noting that that is when the first book came out. If he had searched the
internet before the first book came out - I doub't he would have found
anything about himself - or the wizarding world.
What kind of HP merchandise would there be in the wizard world?

Hagrid is imprecise at times.
I think that they were killed in a home they had secured
as a hideaway as opposed to where James and his family had
lived for generations.

The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again,
at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
Indeed...
there is no evidence that Hogwarts charged tuition,
Harry was able to buy his school supplies while
supplies were subsidized for those who couldn't buy them.
James and Lily's wills would have been probated and the vault
placed in Harry's name. The goblins were able to transfer money
as needed (apparently Sirius's money was moved to Harry's vault).
We don't really know much about how big various fortunes were.

Probably because a lot of the spells he had cast to maintain his power
during his rise all stopped functioning when the AK rebounded on him.
He had IC'd a whole lot of people, and that curse fails when the caster
dies. So suddenly there were a whole lot of people no longer doing his
bidding, and having a big "WTF?" moment.

She could have used the assistance of the Inklings. They were notorious
for tearing apart the works of Lewis and Tolkien (who discussed some of
their projects in work) whenever weaknesses appeared to appear.
