This is very strange. Lately I've noticed that I've been looking at various
newsgroup threads, and there are people replying to posts that are just not
there... I am forced to assume that I'm missing entire reply posts... Does
anyone know why this might be happening? o.O

Wish I could explain it....

Just changed from Demon to BTInternet and am missing all sorts of stuff.
I've even tried other providers, such as Claranet and I'm still missing out
on stuff.

Claranet say that they are putting all the messages up, but I still seem to
be getting "random" references.

Addendum: I'm also missing one of my /own/ postings, even though I have a reply
to it sitting below the posting I replied to. That's freaky. This ain't happened

I'll jump on this boat, too! I've run across a few reply posts in which I
don't remember ever seeing the initial message.

And maybe JAB can help me out on this one, as it is only his posts which do
this. When there are several messages in a thread, his will always come last.
I'll see replies to his messages and not see his until I reach the end of the
thread! All the others are in chronological order, though. I'm pretty sure it
is only his posts that are doing this, though there may be a few others I
haven't noticed yet.

Weirdness abounds.

We've been seeing a large (duh!) influx of postings thanks to the movie, so
the traffic has been getting pushed back. Check your newsreader settings to
see how many messages you are downloading at a time...the ones you are
missing may just be beyond your current limit (i.e. you may only download
100 messages at a time, but the missing message is another 100 away...you'd
need to download 100 more to see it)

Of course, your ISP may just purge their news servers frequently, and the
messages really are unavailable to you (Verizon purges every 2-3 days I've
noticed)...then check out Google Groups for the missing posts.

Check out the posting times on the messages...being in Europe, it's likely
that JAB's paying by the minute for Internet access, so he composes messages
off-line, then releases all of them at once whe he gets on-line (I read
unthreaded, and invariably, new JAB messages show up WAY down in the list)

But of course, no matter what explainations are given, the above statement
remains completely true! 8?)

Your news-server is probably missing some of the posts. Get another one.
I use news.cis.dfn.de (sign up at www.cis.dfn.de) it's free, carries all of
the newsgroups (except binaries) and manages to filter out most of the
spam.

OTOH, you might have accidentally placed someone in your kill-file, which
is why you're not seeing all the posts. Check your programs settings
(press "F1" for help on how to do this).

As a counter-point, however, I read this group everyday and routinely
download and read all of the messages, 300+ at a time. Yet, for some
reason, I'm still seeing missing messages and replies to, apparently,
non-existant posts. Also, Netscape (what I'm using to read) downloads
all of the messages and keeps them threaded for me for up to several
months so, irrespective of the server, I should see the new message in
the old thread. It's just not happening.

Usenet is like that. It's a "best-effort" protocol, not a "reliable"

Tried that too and unfortunately, it didn't pick up two of my main sites
(both rat/rodent based as I have been owned by several rats for a few years
now). I've tried Claranet as well, same problem.

I used to be with Demon, but since getting the ace ADSL, I can't use Demon
anymore. :-(

Yup, same here. Fortunately XNews calls up the message in Google when it's

I don't have any personal experience of Netscape 6 newsreader, but I'd
guess there won't be any huge bugs since it's probably the most common
newsreader after OE(or almost). Why not get a better newsfeed? The only
messages I see replying to non-existent ones are replying to spam or
binary posts....
http://news.cis.dfn.de
Based in germany, but perfectly good for anyone in europe.

The only other thing is that some stupid news readers don't thread
properly, so any posts show up in a new one, but they aren;t that
common IIRC.

Why not do what I do? I use news.cis.dfn.de for my main NGs, and the

with news.cis.dfn.de and the btinternet news server.
BTW I've heard no end of complaints about BTInternet news. ISPs in the
UK are a big fat pile of shit, I haven't seen anywhere providing decent
internet access at home (compared to the US, Sweden etc)... the only
way I know to get decent access here is to live in halls at uni. And
that's only in some... a friend at birmingham gets barely 4 times modem
speed... I get 200 times modem here...

Are you doing this several times a day? If you only downlad 300 per
day, you won't get them all. I've been checking the total on the
server every hour for several days now and during peak posting hours
(between noon and midnight EST) we are averaging 30 posts per hour.
They are coming in faster than I can download and read (still using the
slow modem, but I'm not sure that even DSL would catch me up)

I think it is your newsfeed. I'm seeing lots of posts, as we'd expect,
but I'm not seeing the wierdness that you describe. Or maybe you

Could it be possble that your newsreader was set to download the most
recent 200 messages and his was the 201st most recent message? Or did
it download in the same batch as the replies and just show up in the
wrong sequence? Do you have your preferences set to thread by
reference or time/date or something else? If you thread by reference,
the replies should always follow what they are replying to and be
indented a level deeper. OH, I just peaked at your header and see that
you use Outlook, that doesn't indent threads does it, wonder if it even
knows how to thread by reference, the only threading method that makes
sense to me.

I just loaded up outlook and checked out the preferences, there aren't
very many settings to set, my suggestion, get yourself a real
newsreader.

Every time I open my reader I download all of the messages available.
It only takes something like 4-5 seconds to d/l 2-300 headers. I've
since been told that they have been having some technical problems and
that they'll be changing their newssource fairly soon.

Yup. I generally come on about 2-3 times per day and clear the group
out. I do make an effort to read every message that comes through but,
of course, there are some threads that I simply don't reply to.

You can email requests to the news.cis.dfn.de team for newsgroups, for
example, I got alt.music.superfurries added a few months ago by emailing them
- they'll be happy to oblige if you really want a group.

Actually, you get many fewer posts if you killfile the subject header '"Harry

200 or so when I log on in the morning :D
