Entirely due to Usenet collapse -- the traffic on
rec.games.roguelike.angband has also vanished, for example, yet the game
is still being discussed widely on Web forums. Harry Potter fiction is
still being written and shared online, and indeed my recent Harry Potter
oneshot (self-plug:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/31317815 )
received more reader activity than any of the works I put far more
effort into in other fandoms.
In the last ten years an entire generation has arrived online with no
access to Usenet, let alone any interest in it. Even the
comp.sys.* activity has largely moved to the Web, although if you post
there you are at least likely to receive a reply from people who are
still passively subscribed.
