I watched the movie in German Thursday morning (at 00:01, and I had to
get up at 6 a.m. the next morning, argh ...).

Well, it is really a heavily shortened version of the book.

I think that you won't neccessariliy understand the movie if you
haven't read the book.

Do you agree?

It depends on what you mean with "understand". The movie is a classic
Hollywood breath taking story with full force from start to end. Even
then, it misses many situations. However, what I really miss in the
movie, is the movie, is the everyday life at Galtworth (and in the
gomp world for that matter). This is quite important because you then
is no longer an on looker, but you feel more part of the story. (In
fact it was my daughter (11) who told me she missed these parts.)

Of course, it could not be possible to make a movie covering the
book. A TV-series would have to be made.

One thing that I do find fascinating is Quidditch, the sport of Harry Potter,
the sport of wizards. It seems just about the greatest sport ever invented,
better even than NASCAR. ~Joe Posnanski
