I think Sirius *was* handsome, when he was a young man. I don't think he's still handsome
after 10 years in Azkaban. In fact, I think he's supposed to be rather gaunt and aged.

Short answer: Yes. Maybe not in a conventional sense, though.
(But what's so fascinating about Hugh Grant anyway?)
Long answer: Agree with Tim about Sirius' looks, remember Harry
comparing him with Bellatrix Lestrange in OoP. Still, there are parts
about physical beauty that stays with you forever, the bone structure of
the face and the symmetry of your features for instance. (Wonder if I
could make a case for Sirius' looks as being an outward sign of all the
things he lost?)
What's more important, I think Oldman's a great actor who gives his
roles a lot of intensity and charisma. Can't wait to see what Cuaron
makes of the scenes between him and Alan Rickman, Columbus would have
bungled them for sure.
(But the tattoos, sigh. Mr. Director, this isn't Memento.)

of course I'm the one that also thinks that Alan Rickman is quite tasty
and would take Tom Felton over Daniel Radcliffe any day (if they were
about 5 years older)

I personally think he'll be great as Snuffles.

Definately.. especially in The Scarlet Letter.

Yup, I think Ben Affleck is a bland nothing - Alan Rickman is way too tasty
for the way Snape is described, but he is perfect. Gary Oldman will do fine
as gaunt and formerly-handsome. Anyway, if there is one description that is
over-emphasised it is 'messy black hair and green eyes' so it seems we can
live without the exact physical manifestation !!!!
And I cannot wait ten years to see how the boys turn out !!

I'll bet Rowling thinks he's handsome. ;) Good looks, like literature,
religion, and politics are subjective. Gary Oldman is an attractive man.
He's not my thing exactly, but I don't think I'd throw him out of bed for
eating crackers.

He's short too... My choice for Sirius was always Colin Firth.
At least he's a good actor tho.
He can be. He can also be incredibly ugly. That's his magic on screen.
It took one viewing of one [particularly bad] movie to turn me into a Gary
fan of sorts, but the one thing I noticed upon renting his other pictures
was that he's *entirely* different from film to film; different voices,
different facial expressions, different body postures...it's fantastic.
(And a tad disappointing since I wanted to see more of that one character
I fell in love with.) Same thing happened with me and Alan Rickman in
Galaxy Quest" but upon renting Rickman's films, I keep seeing the same
character resurfacing over and over...same silky voice (thank GOD!) same
condescending sneer, same sultry, smouldering presence...*drool* Heh...my
boyfriend used to wear his hair like Gary Oldman's from Scarlet Letter...
now he's cut it like Snape's and died it black. =D~
When he wants to be, oh yeah.
I was in the Christmas shop in Disneyland day before yesterday, and I heard
Alan Rickman right behind me. I turned around and it wasn't him. I kind of
laughed to myself over what a geek I was and the clerk unpacking ornaments
said, "Oh, wow, that guy sounded just like (we both said) 'Alan Rickman'".
Laughing, we explained to him and his wife why we were laughing near him. He
thought it was pretty cool and his wife said "Who's Alan Rickman?" Heh. I
just wish I'd had the presence of mind to get him on my cel to tell Alice to
practice her cursive.

He is not bad looking. But he is no way near good-looking enough to be
handsome as JKR makes Sirius out to have been. But looks/appearance never
seemed important to post-Azkaban Sirius. I think in terms of getting across
Sirius' temper and his eagerness to get at Peter and his self-guilt when he
tells Harry that he as good as killed James and Lily will be done well
enough by Oldman's acting.
They just need to get someone real hot to play younger, memory Sirius in
film5, if they film that scene. I think christian coulson is the most
handsome out of all the actors that have graced a harry potter film. yeah,
they should have him back to play young Sirius.

not as handsome as sirius should be, even when gaunt etc, but he is good
looking i'd say. not fantastic looking but certianly ok or more than ok from
my opinion.

He's definitely a good looking man, IMO, and more importantly an
incredible actor. I'm more distraught they didn't get Ewan McGreggor
for Lupin.
Star Wars ruined him.
He's not what Sirius looks like in my minds eye but Gary Oldman is a
really good actor and I can't wait to see the Shrieking Shack scene
on film. I hope this new Director pulls it off.

trouble with that is that CC is now labeled as Tom Riddle/Young
Voldemort. If they bring him back in any other role it will confuse
people, esp the kids. Even the tiniest risk that anyone would be
confused is enough to make the PTBs not hire Christian for another role
Not handsome, no.
Pity they didn't cast Jason Carter.

How's that? He stopped being able to act because of Star Wars, or
he's now too typecast for the role?

Heh, I meant for me. Can't see him on film or TV without thinking
of Phantom Menace.
I have to agree. David Thewlis is a good actor. I just don't see him as
Lupin. I would have prefered Ewan, Sean Bean or Ralph Fiennes as Lupin
myself.

Apparently? I thought it was a fact by now.

HE's a really good actor, but not.
I mean he's handsome, but not that handsome to be Sirius Black.
ALl this days I saw GO movies and I'm trying, trying very hard but he
still doesn't convice me.
I wanted Ewan McGreggor to be Lupin too! he's very very nearly how I
imgained Lupin too look. do you know why Ewen wasn't cast? Did they ask him?
Did he say he was too busy?

Jane Grey
"Was he playing with the Snitch?" said Lupin eagerly.
"Yeah," said Harry, watching uncomprehendingly as Siruis and Lupin beamed
reminiscently. "Well ... I thought he was a bit of an idiot."
He's in Australia filming Star Wars III.

Have you seen Trainspotting? The Pillow Book? Velvet Goldmine? IMO these
films formed my opinion of him, and PM and AOTC simply were not the Ewan I
was familiar with, and liked.

don't know if they asked him but it's moot since he was already under
contract for Star Wars 3 which was going to be in principal photography
in Australia for much of the same time period.
Supposedly they also asked Christian Bale, but this is all according
to the IMDB, so take that with a grain of salt. I guess it's my inner
fangirl that's sad not to have any of-age eyecandy.

Hey, your list is missing Shallow Grave. If you're a McGregor fan and haven't
seen it, you have a delight ahead of you.

I like Ewen McGregger for the fanastic Robert he played in 'A Life Less

I just hoped Star Wars didn't ruin him. I hear that 'Young Adam' is getting
rave reviews, so I think Ewen has not been spoilt by Lucus.
