Hi everyone,

I am doing some research on Harry Potter products for the adult market,
and for a course I am taking we need to come up with a NEW product that
would appeal to the Harry Potter Adult market.

If you have any suggestions for product ideas I would love to hear
them... it is a simple creative product for a consumer behaviour course
and this is part of the research, to ask what Harry fans are looking
for in products!

I really appreciate any ideas you have!!! Thank you so much in
advance!!!

I certainly hope that by "adult market," you mean "Harry Potter fans who
are adults," not "prurient Harry Potter fans."

If so, I would recommend a look at Sky Mall catalogues and the like.
There is no end to the expensive memorabilia for things like Lord of the
Rings, and I'm sure that something similar could be worked up for the
Harry Potter series--"genuine" Harry, Ron, or Hermione wands (or Lord
Voldemort wands, for those among us who are dark); Wizard Chess sets
(made of matte finish glass); Time Turner paperweights; etc.

Oh wait! I've been showing you things already out there. If you're really
trying to get into the "adult" market, try an anesthetizing condom that
puts a stopper in the little death, as the French call it. They're doing
quite well in Germany (Durex Performa). Some cardiac patients say that
their nitroglycerin spray applied topically <ahem> does just as well. Just

Sorry I should clarify... when I say the adult market, I mean Adults
who enjoy the Harry Potter Series and are interested in appropriate
products!! There are some creative ideas you've all come up with,
however, I doubt my prof will appreciate them... it is a university

Thank you again for your suggestions, if they could be more PG, that

I agree. I rarely purchase HP items that picture the actors. I really
don't like the character images either. I prefer the 'HP' logo or a
school crest. I'd like to see a 'Hogwarts Staff' T-shirt or one with a
simple HP logo on breast pocket. How about an HP logo shirt with a
Hogwarts crest on the back? That'd be cool.

The only problem with that is that the glasses Harry wears are supposed
to be the detested style, the cheapest frames available free from the
national health. They're utterly generic, unless you put the warner
bros HP logo on them, or lightning bolts or something like that, and then
they go the other way into the overly-addicted-movie-fan-look.

What is particularly Potterian that is functional? The only computer
mentioned is Dudley's. Dean does artwork but I doubt that sticking
a HP logo onto a set of watercolors will add much. The elegant chess
set is a nice idea, or maybe they could license the old Battle Chess
computer game with a slight revamping to make it closer to Wizard Chess.

The translucent glass chess set is available in the usual form; making
one in wizard chess-piece form might be interesting, though since the
books have no pictures, we don't know what the pieces ought to look
like; that could be another WB movie-image item.

I recall being disappointed when the first batch of HP tie-ins came
out and the bathrobes were sized for tiny children; I'd have bought
an adult-sized wizard bathrobe, especially if it had resembled the
school robes in the first movie. Actually, the robes with functional
hoods in the third movie were a pretty good design too.

Similarly, it was ages before they finally began to produce the scarves,
and that was almost the first thing people thought of (and the scarves
now being sold still aren't like the movie ones, but many independent
knitters have worked up patterns). I've gotten over the initial urge,
so I don't know whether they've finally begun selling the neckties,
which don't need to have a logo on them at all; just getting the colors
and stripes right would be enough. (There oculd be a tiny logo on the
back, just to make WB happy.)

See, what I'm getting at is subtlety. Adults are easily embarrassed.
They will wear a fun bathrobe in private, but the necktie should be
"coincidentally" the same colors with no immediately obvious logo to
announce the fact. Those who see it and know will know, the rest
need not know.

I do like the tiny laprobes or nap blankets with an HP logo on them,
that can be buttoned into a temporary cape for a small child. They
qualify as a toy that has a potential ordinary use as well.

I would like to see a very good quality china teacup and saucer
with the Hogwarts coat of arms on it - but I want the one JKR herself
drew, or at least the best, most fully-developed movie one, not the
over-simplified ones that look like they were made up for the eventual
WB saturday-morning cartoon. I don't want it to say Warner Bros all
over it, either; that logo can be on the bottom, but true Hogwarts
china would not have a muggle movie company logo on it. The idea is
that it's from the teacher's room; it isn't necessarily the same
stuff that the kids use.

I saw the McGonagall plaid deerstalker-with-a-point - that was very
cute, though I think it was less pointed in the movie. It was
done right - no splashy logo, just a hat that had the essential
element that it was something a Potterverse witch would have worn.

The daily agenda or organizer notebook sounds like something that
a MoM wizard might use. It wouldn't have a picture of Harry on it.
Instead, it would be made so that it looked like an antique book,
maybe with hinge-straps and some interesting leather-tooling.
The interior could be light-parchment-colored instead of blank
white. Another option could be cordovan red, or other classic
leather colors. An _inside_ page could have the notation that
it was "Ministry of Magic Standard Issue".
A student version, like the nagging schedule planners that
Hermione gave the boys, could have a similarly discreet
Hogwarts coat of arms, with a place to write in your House
on the _inside_, where the owner writes in their name and
contact information.
Go for something with a slightly medieval-to-19th century
feeling to the style, so it's unusual without being blatant.
Keep the corporate logo stuff as tiny as possible, so that
it isn't the first thing you notice. I don't want to advertise
WB, I want to play in the Potterverse.

For casual fun, maybe a t-shirt that promotes Ron Weasley's
favorite team, or Dumbledore's - the ones that will never be
seen in a movie but add to the convincingly detailed universe.
The Chudley Cannons or Puddlemere United have some appeal to
those of us who cheer the underdog. A Puddlemere United
sports bag (of good quality) with no more than a very tiny
line of type acknowledging the connection with WB would
appeal to me. A Chudley Cannons bookbag might find some
takers, especially as the bright orange color would make it
easy to find.

Awww... ^_^
Well, at least you have a sense of humor and about it didn't get all
offended. ^_^
I'd love more adult-sized shirts, especially ones for Hufflepuff and
Ravenclaw.. So much of the merchandise is geared towards the two main
Houses dealt with on the books, but some of us really like the other two
houses. If there was a shirt that had the Ravenclaw logo, I'd probably buy
it (that was the House the WB's Web Site sorted me into).

These are really great ideas!!! Thank you EVERYONE who has
contributed!!! I have a lot to work off from here...

I do have another question:

would anyone be interested in the following HP items:
HP Cell phone edition
HP Digital camera
HP Credit card
HP PDA
HP decked out vehicle (and if yes, what features would be interesting?
- this may be more for the HP loving family)

I am getting the sense that everything needs to be subtle yet elegant
with logos, designs etc.

would any of the above be interesting products???

Thanks AGAIN !!!

Surely! With HP accessories too. That thing that hangs from them, I
think the name is dangler? Well, I suggest Hedwig, Pig or Snitchs.

But not just the HP symbol on it: try to make it look potterian. And if
the pictures move, extra bonus ;)

Depends, if the money's going to disappear, don't... I dunno, really. A
Credit Card is something quite more serious. What if by mistake someone
steals it thinking is just a trading card?

Logos and stuff are great but that's not what it would give the product
the Potter look. If so, I'd just get a sticker. Look a this:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/harrypotter/

Despite the features, personally, it really doesn't appeals me as a gadget.

Yes, and don't forget the feather-like pen.

You're welcome.

A diary/dayplanner done in the style of the Discworld guild diaries

blank pages.

I'd also like a hand of glory.

I'd go for a HP cell phone edition (available w/HP wallpaper &
ringtones) and probably the HP credit card (featuring a photo of a
Galleon, Sickle & Knut? Or various characters?)

I've purchased several of the various HP items for myself and my
family. Wall calendars, week-at-a-glance calendars, computer games,
XBox 360 game, Hogwarts robe, scarfs, wands, ties, t-shirts, House
ring, DE keychain, wizard chess set, Scene It DVD game, pins, stickers,
movie poster books, stationary, wallet w/House crest, magazines, the HP
booklight & HP booklight cases w/House crests, puzzles, bookmarkers,
journals, a replica of the snakehead cane Lucius carries, toothbrushes,
House banners, Hogwarts student hat (as in SS), patches, pins, UNO card
game, movie trading cards, trading card game, official HP plastic
glasses, HP logo wool sweater, and other misc. HP stuff like wizard
candy. Basically if it is HP related, we must have it, although we
prefer the characters to appear as the actors from the movies as
opposed to the illustrated ones from the books.
My nephew has long wondered why we haven't been able to find HP
band-aids, since they have marketed so much of this stuff to kids. He'd
love to see some, especially in good guys, bad guys, magical
creatures/items editions. He has also said he'd love a pair of gloves
(to go with his scarf) with the House crest.

I would really like to see more items featuring the dark characters
from the series. It is easy to find various items w/Harry, Hermione,
Ron either together or individually. But, I wonder where are the items
with a scowling Snape or an imperious Lucius?! Not to mention Sirius.
Maybe some pajamas with just their image and name or a witty line
perhaps? I could imagine a t-shirt with the Dark Mark on the front and
Lord Voldemort's name followed by the names of the Death Eathers on the
back. From what I've gathered from other adults I've spoken to and many
who write online, a lot of adults seem to be interested in these adult
characters and yet I can't seem to find much geared to us. I wear the
scarf, ring, t-shirts and use the wallet and keychain, but haven't
found much else that wasn't meant for kids. I was pleased to find the
booklight; I thought that and the cases for it were pretty cool. Still,
I'd like a ring like Draco wears in POA or a leather tote like he
carries (w/the snake & his name on the side). Subtle, but other fans
would recognise the relevance. Maybe they'll sell a locket that looks
like Slytherin's heirloom. Or how about a flask that says "Polyjuice
potion" or "pumpkin juice"? They should definitely come up with some
stuff for the adult fans though. I know I'll be looking forward to it.

I think the cell phone idea is really good. I think clothing is good
also. There are t-shirts on the market that show disguised designs
when exposed to the sun. Having a HP logo on it that only is visible
in the sun (wow, like magic! LOL). I know one of the latest trends in
handbags for women is charm holders dangling from the handles or
zippers. Having HP charms (no pun intended!) for a bracelet would be
nice. BTW, the HP I-pod is really cool.

In article <Xns9787DCD3C5D49we...@204.127.36.1>,

With the exterior made to look like a medieval book, and logo stuff only
on the inside.

Aren't those available in Halloween stores?

The organic cotton tee sure is tempting.

The one thing that I'd be worried about is trademark/IP. I don't know
if anyone is doing *official* "St. Brutus's" merchandise, but if they
are then I wouldn't want to get caught on their turf. I don't suppose
it would be a problem if I just have someone print it for me, but I
would be more cautious about a transaction such as the purchase of an
already printed product.

So . . . does anyone know if there's any official "St. Brutus's"
merchandise?

I am still waiting for an I pod that speaks the menus. Then I an all the
others that can't see that screen could use it. And people would not have to
look down while driveing to get the next play list. But so far no one has
made one like that. Odd thing to as the programs to make them do it already
egsit but they just don't bother to match up the teck.

If you go to www.qvcuk.com, you'll see about twenty collector items for
Harry Potter. They're also having a "Harry Potter" collector's hour on
March 20 to coincide with the DVD release in the UK

What's wrong with some of those products? You can walk around with your
Gryffindor sword, can't you? while the Hedwig's cage is cute and pretty,
is still no useful. We adults have other products that use everyday:
notebooks, cellphones, ipods, bags that, on one side are full with the
faces of the HP movies actors or have a smile little logo on one tiny
corner. Nah! we want stuff with the wizardkind appearance or more book
related rather than the movies.
(The letter opener and the pens are gorgeous, BTW)
