No spoiler space, as I'm sure everyone here has at least read or watched
SS/PS...

Upon my third reading of SS/PS, I have come to the conclusion that there
is more to Trevor the Toad than we have seen so far. Case in point:
Trevor is lost on the Hogwart's Express. Neville and Hermione (and
possibly others) search for it while traveling. Where does Trevor end
up? In one of the boats. Now I ask, how does a normal toad leave the
train to hop in a boat that happens to be going to Hogwarts, the very
place Neville is heading? Only a toad of incredible intelligence beyond
usual frogs would do that. A normal toad would have jumped in the lake
or hopped off to freedom, if it got out of the train out all. I know
after PoA an animagus pet is old news, so I'm not saying this is the
case. Just that there is more to Trevor than we've seen.

Harry learned quickly not to feel too sorry for the gnomes. He
decided just to drop the first one he caught over the hedge, but the
gnome, sensing weakness, sank its razor-sharp teeth into Harry's finger
and he had a hard job shaking it off - until -
"Wow, Harry - that must've been fifty feet...."

Interesting idea. I figured there had to be something going on with
Trevor, but I hadn't even thought about the intelligence necessary to get
to the boat. I guess I thought Hagrid routinely found any missing animals
in a quick two-second magical scan of the train before leaving, or maybe
the sandwich trolley lady did it and gave them to him. If Trevor got
there by himself, and wasn't just heading for the nearest body of water
(as far as I know, toads aren't particularly water-dwellers except for
egg-laying), that could be a really big hint. But if he isn't an animagus
(and that would be awfully old at this point), and if transfigured people
don't remember being anything else, why would he have done that? Is there
a kind of enhanced-intelligence toad, like an amphibian equivalent
of a kneazle?

I think all wizard familiars have been enhanced via magic, like owls,
and cats, and toads, oh my. Scabbers was the exception, as Ron
thought him a normal rat (and I'm not talking about POA's revelation).
I mean normal, compared to the usual familiars.

How does a normal snake talk to someone (in Spanish, even, though it was
raised in a British zoo!) and know to head to Brazil?

Have you read/seen Chamber of Secrets? The answer is there.

I don;t hope he's another animagus. Perhaps he's Neville's Grandmother
- keeping an eye on him.

Uhh ... perhaps Trevor is related to Kermit the frog ... who also
showed some amazing talents, including a love of pork ;-)

Very odd considering they speak a form of Portugese in Brazil.
Most likely the reason is that Harry is actually speaking
Parseltounge, but from his POV the snake appears to be speaking
English.

I know about Parseltongue, thanks. But, see, snakes are NOT that smart..
Maybe you could talk to one to and get it to obey you, like a dog or a cay,
but to have one talk back?
My point is, animals in the JKR world generally seem a bit smarter than
those in the real world.

But then Lee Jordan is not a 1st year so perhaps he has dispensation or
older students are not kept rigidly to the rule, as to Scabbers well I
assume that perhaps as the rat had been Percy's and already been to the
school (I assume with him) it didn't matter too much, Ron may have even been
given permission to bring him.

I thought the cat, rat and toad were mentioned specifically because they

How mugglish of you to assume a snake doesn't have that sort of
intelligence. Just because you can't converse with a snake doesn't
mean that Harry can't. And Harry had just told him he was Brazilian,
and are we sure that that's where the snake was headed? He may have
just been headed out of captivity.

A lot of creatures seem to know that it is safer to hide their
intelligence. If we knew snakes were intelligent, we'd kill them all.

I'm of the very small school of thought that Trevor is always trying to
get down to Hagrid's hen house to hatch that basilisk. He is pulled to
it almost like a magnetic force and that's why he sticks with the group
heading towards Hogwarts.

Well, if an average snake can have that kind of intelligence, than maybe an
average toad does, as well. Which goes back to my point, which is that
Trevor *could* just be a "normal": toad and still do the things that people
are suggesting make him "special".

Maybe there's a spell on Trevor to keep him somewhere near Neville, but
not always where Neville can find him.

Some toads secrete poisonous and-or hallucinogenic drugs in their skin;
just how much does Neville handle Trevor?

I'd always just assumed that was the case. It never occured to me,
that Trevor was more intelligent than any other (toad) familiar.

Instinct, that's what toads do. The sit on hen eggs and the resulting
hatchling is a basilisk. Details can be found in FBAWTFT. The process
takes seven years, so watch for it in book 7.

yeah, that does, doesn't it.

Ok, good. I just wanted to point out that the behavior of animals* in the
HP universe is such that a toad that seems much smarter than those we're
familiar with fits right in with other animals that seem "normal" in that
reality yet are more intelligent than the animals we're used to.
*I always want to types "anime" instead of "animal(s)". ^_^

Insects can speak?
<yes, I know they communicate. Not the same thing>

I hope so. ^_^

I dunno; they'd have some animal rights and civil rights people pulling for
them

Catherine Johnson. Who likes snakes just the way they are.

"Well, I can certainly see why we're trying to keep them alive," said
Malfoy sarcastically. "Who wouldn't want pets that can burn, sting, and
bite all at once?"
