I am wondering what words ared used in Harry Potter only once.

My example: slut, used only (I am pretty sure) on page 365 of HBP

Possible second example: plural, used (only?) in Ch 23 of HBP in
"Horcruxes in the plural"

well, that will take me a while.

i can think of the converse - words used over, and over, and over.

i would like to see one of the journalists, in a press interview
about Book 7, ask JKR is she plans to use the word "reproachfully".

one phrase that comes out a lot in Book 3 is, "looking daggers".

but, just used once ?

how about "flesh eating bug bear", the reason Hagrid wants to
put a charm around the end coop in book 2, i think. something
or somebody is attacking his animals. i think he only mentions
that animal once.

'Arrant', uttered by Binns in his one and only interesting lesson (in
CoS). I know because I had to go and look it up.

Effing.

"Enough - effing - owls," muttered Uncle Vernon distractedly, stomping over to
the window and slamming it shut again.

OOTP, Chapter 2, A Peck of Owls

BTW, "slut" does appear exactly once, as does "whore" from the same snippit.

Just for fun, I looked to see how often the word Occurring occurs.

The word Occurring occurs only once!

Everybody probably remembers the one and only time "bitch" is mentioned,
considering that there was quite a blow up over it.

Just the once, and once again in OOtP. That's not really a lot, is it?

Nah, Ron ejaculated at one point or another, I forget when exactly but it
was before DD died...
heh, now that sounds kind of adult, doesn't it?

Voldemort did not answer. Morfin was working himself into a rage
again; he brandished his knife and shouted, "Dishonored us, she did,
that little slut! And whore you, coming here and asking questions
about all that? It's over, innit. . . . It's over. ..."

Heh, my error. "Who're" got rendered as "whore" by the OCR.

I starting working on a word database and a program to sort and count all the
"singletons," but I quickly got bored with it.

There's a Japanese cartoon (whose name I have forgotten) where these kids are
sitting around reading HP and looking up the UKisms when they find them.

"So when they say they're eating spotted dick . . . "

Ah. Short attention span. In fact, while it was but the work of a moment
to generate such a list, I concede there's more effort in weeding out the
rubbish, not least the words with excessive vowels. To assist this, I've
also ignored all hyphenated & apostrophed words, or less than 3 letters.

Too harsh? Not harsh enough? Perhaps, but over 5,000 examples remain...

To anyone whose newsreader can't cope with long posts, or else is set to
ignore them, you just missed a list of 5,486 words occurring only once.

Some might consider this an advantage... ~_~

Some might indeed.

I took it this thread was about _interesting_ words, words that someone
thought might be notable for the fact that they occurred only once, and
not the hundreds of words that incidentally occur only once. So if yo
would, please, go back and describe what about each of those >5k words
makes it interesting that that particular word occurs only once.

Actually, I figured if I said I got bored with it someone else would do
the work for me. I didn't think it would be done this quickly, though.
:)

Seriously, thanks -- that was pretty cool.

Indeed, that's why I said so.

There's nothing ~individually~ interesting at all, which is why I waited
until people had stopped posting with enthusiasm. However, there is some
interest in the whole set; and DLH deserves an answer to his question.

You're welcome, Max. Just for fun, here are the top thirty words....

It's not surprising to see that this is a list of articles, pronouns,
and the main characters. It's also not surprising that many of the
words used only once are proper nouns.

It's more interesting to see a list of interesting words used only once
or possibly used many times. Is serious and seriously on that list?

I thought it was interesting that the most frequent nouns were "eyes"
and "face". Kinda indicates something important to JKR, I think.

You-know-who comes in rather high for someone whose name cannot be
mentioned.

I believe that the word "churlish" only appeared once in the series.
Rowling used it to describe Harry's reaction to being praised in his
broom-flying skills during the initial Dumbledore's Army meeting in
Hogsmeade.

Well, thanks for informing me that "plural" is indeed on the list; that
word is of interst because it relates to the unprecedented nature of
Voldemort's evil. "Slut" is interesting because of the way it is very
adult and shows that some of the content (especially that relating to
the Gaunt side of Voldemort's ancestry) is very adult. Overall, I find
your complete list a little overwhelming and unnecessary-looking (most
of the proper names included are not things I find interesting, but
Peevsie is an exception), but it is nice knowing that any curiosity
about singletons can be satisfied by going to it. So I am not sure how
I should respond to your assertion that I deserve an answer to my
question.
Something stupid: 5486 = 2*13*211, so this is unlucky!
Something unsettling: why does "he" outnumber "she" so greatly (by a
factor > 4, if I remember correctly) on the list of most frequently
used words?
Something CRAZY: You can consider yourself a master of Potter minutia
if you can successfully identify the context of each of the words on
that list! Is anyone willing to offer a monetary prize for this?

Rather, Harry's own thought about how he didn't want his reaction to be.

Could be a fun challenge on the fanfic sites:
Using only these "top 200" words, write a HP fanfic.

You're asking the wrong question. The most commonly used character names
according to a post earlier in this thread are Harry, Ron, Hermione,
Dumbledore, Hagrid, Snape, and Malfoy. Of those seven, only one is female.
So the correct question is, why doesn't "he" outnumber "she" by even more
than it does. In theory, "he" should outnumber "she" by a ratio near 6 to
1.

The frequence of "he" versus "she" should match the amount of page-time each
sex gets. Hermione seems to appear almost as much as Dumbledore, Hagrid,
Snape, and Malfoy combined. Hence, the increased frequence of "she."

Good point, although the most frequent noun is "time" (she rarely uses
this word as a verb). Also, "back" is common, but tricky to assess.

Ah, good ole Hermione... ^_^

Any proper names are there because I wasn't inclined to manually sift
through the computer-generated list: words are presented with the case
in which they are written, so an initial capital is not an identifier;
plus I didn't want to get bogged down in various borderline cases.

Ignoring case & punctuation, the score is "he" 17996 to "she" 4223,
a factor of 4.26 - you remember correctly.

I guess it's since the books are from the viewpoint of a male.
