Coincidence, or something more sinister?

An owl send from Quirrel with a fake message?

A plant at the MOM?

A double-bluff by Dumbledore?

So many questions

my theory is that the letter would have had a MoM seal on it or something
to show it was legit. Dumbledore wouldn't rush off if he thought it was a
fake, especially with the possibility of Harry in danger, which makes the
second "less likey" theory the forerunner.

You are assuming that dumbledore didn't know. I have had a feeling that
maybe dumbledore did know all about what was going to happen, and he wanted
harry to have a go by himself, kind of training him

Yup, Harry thinks that too, end of PS/ SS:
'Well,' Hermione exploded, 'if he did- I mean to say- that's ter-
rible -you could have been killed.'
'No, it isn't,' said Harry thoughtfully, 'He's a funny man,
Dumbledore. I think he sort of wanted to give me a chance. I
think he knows more or less everything that goes on here, you
know. I reckon he had a pretty good idea we were going to try,
and instead of stopping us, he just taught us enough to help. I
don't think it was an accident he let me find out how the mirror
worked. It's almost like he thought I had the right to face
Voldemort if I could ...'

Plus who gave him back the invisibility cloak with the message, "Just in
case"? My bet is Dumbledore.

Harry has not got much talent for conventional magic; he's like Cat if you
know the Chrestomanci books (Diana Wynne Jones) His magic is a more powerful
one that comes from deep within and needs special guidance and training, not
ordinary lessons which teach a more superficial magic. I think that's
Dumbledore's point. He did not intend Harry to tackle Voldemort... but he
prepared him "Just in Case."

Harry works on instinct and association. (Like when he realises Hagrid will
have revealed how to calm Fluffy.)

I believe that when Dumbledore left for London it was part of a plan. He
could return surreptitiously because he says in front of the mirror of
Erised, "I don't need a cloak to become invisible." Snape knows about
Quirrell. Assuming he's working against Voldemort he will have told the rest
of the staff- or at least those who laid the traps. During the exams Quirrel
would be an invigilator - once they're finished he is harder to observe, an
ideal time for him to strike. So Dumbledore leaves, in order to flush him
out, intending to return before nightfall and act together with the other
teachers.

Both McGonagall and Snape are keen to get Harry outdoors that day. They have
more important things in mind. Both act strangely.
"She eyed him with a mixture of shock and *suspicion*."
"'You shouldn't be inside *on a day like this*,' he said with an odd twisted
smile... 'people will think you're up to something.'"
I think that when Harry senses, "Snape's going through the trapdoor
tonight," he's correct, because all the teachers are.
I think the teachers are unsure - for reasons we have not yet been told -
whether Harry is completely to be trusted. Could his association with
Voldemort turn him to evil? (Did he actually absorb some of V's magic within
his scar?). Dumbledore alone trusts him.

Dumbledore has the same deep instinct as Harry:
'...No sooner had I reached
London than it became clear to me that the place I should be was
the one I had just left. I arrived just in time to pull Quirrell off you-'

By the way either Quirrell or more likely Voldemort is an expert at
Quidditch. It took Harry plus two others to pin down the already damaged
key. Quirrell/ Voldemort did it on his own.

We know it was Dumbledore. He admits it later.

I completely forgot about this until you brought it up. But I completely
agree, dumbledore is training him. But I prefer not to dwell on it, trying
to predict what is going to happen in future books will only make you feel
stupid when they are released, lol.

Again, a valid point, and well made. Is it possible that harry's quiditch
abilities came from both his father and the transfer of powers through
Voldemort? we can only wait and find out
