Oh, come on! The paperbacks cost less than the price of the movie ticket,
less still if you buy them second hand, your local library is free and I'm
sure one of your friends wouldn't mind lending you their copy.

Does anyone know if it is possible to download the English version of the
Harry Potter books? I left my sister my copies when I went to uni, and I'm
not travelling 150 miles to get them back!

Thanks in advance,

Vic

Do you never go home for the weekend during term time? :-)

Over harsh, I think. But while I have no problem morally with Victoria
(or any similar person) who has already paid for her copies, downloading
an ebook version when her paper copy is inconvenient to use, the
distribution of these things raise more problems than solutions.

If you put the book up for download you are breaking the law, even
if morally speaking no harm is being done. Most users would have
their own copies and JKR would not miss the one or two sales from
those who read the e-books without buying a paper/tape copy.

Asking for these things on a public newsgroup is also part of the
problem: it's one thing to pass a bootleg tape to your mates in
private, it's quite another to do it where the whole world can
see what you're doing. The blatentness is far worse than the
crime.

I'm not having a go at Victoria, as I don't think she's done
anything thats really wrong, just poining out the problems with
unoffical ebooks.

My solution would be to join your local library (as already suggested),
they are bound to have multiple copies, and being a student you could
save money by lending other reading material. If it isn't Leeds you could
even hire the sublime recordings by Stephen Fry, excellent
for high stress periods.

Actually Leeds does have HP on tape, it is just negligent with
its greater stock of spoken word.

Yup - but I only live 100 miles away :-) Thinking about it, it would
probably cost less to post the paperback than it would to buy it. She
should get her good-fer-nuttin' sister to mail it back with the next food
parcel.

Quite right. But, personally, the time spent finding then downloading AND
verifying ebooks... well, even on minimum wage you'd probably earn enough
to buy them!

And, of course, the best thing about [British] libraries is, every time you
borrow a book, the author gets paid! Everybody's a winner!
