The Elder wand was able to repair Harry's in DH. It would have been
nice for Dumbledore to "repairo" Ron's wand in COS.

No. Ron's original wand was a "hand me down" from one of his older
brothers (forgot whom). It wasn't "suited" to him. It was in fact a
good thing that he broke his ill-suited wand. He was forced to get one
for _himself_ and thus had an opportunity to let the wand choose the
wizard. So it was correct that Dumbledore made no attempt to repair old
wand.

I doubt if DD knew it could [it most likely haven't been tried before
Harry]. In any case I don't think it would have been wise... to advertise
that he had the Elder Wand by fixing a cheap second hand wand.

I doubt it would have advertised anything, but simply reinforced the
belief that Dumbledore was a powerful wizard.

And whether the wand was second-hand or not, waste not want not.

I'm not sure if DD should have exposed the elder wand for a 100 galleons
deluxe wand... I am sure it wouldn't be worth it for Ron's.

Maybe it only works on "family" wands. Harry owned them both, so they
work on each other.

That's how the trouble all started. Loud mouth moron advertising he
had an unbeatable wand. That's just a challenge to the universe, and
the universe answered.

After reading all the replies so far, I am surprised why no one has
talked about the OBVIOUS. Dumbledore did not have the ELDER WAND
during CoS!!!

It was not yet conceived as a storyline by JKR. She invented the whole
Hallow thingies sometime between the end of OotP and middle of the
muddle called HBP.

I'm sure that he didn't want to draw any attention to the fact he had
the Elder Wand.

It would also have been nice for him to have spoken to Hagrid sooner
(rather than leaving him to stew for a week) after the story about his
being half-giant broke. That's simply Dumbledore's rather lonely
character, as JKR discussed in an interview once. More to the point,
though, is the fact that he can't spend all of his time fixing
everybody else's problems, preferring (and quite rightly) to let
others deal with their own problems - unless it's something extremely
serious. He has his eye on the big picture.

Multiple people have said that, but it makes no sense. That would be
the same as saying that any extraordinary magic Dumbledore may have
performed in the preceding years announced his possession of the Elder
Wand. Why would the repair of Ron's wand be more extraordinary than
anything else Dumbledore had proved capable of preceding it?

This discussion is ridiculous. Dumbledore is not a wand maker! It isn't
his job to go around fixing everyone's broken wands. Remember a fair
number of students would conceivably break or damage their wands in a
school year. Ron isn't the only one. If Dumbledore fixes Ron wand, then
to be fair, he will have to fix everyone else's too.

Besides I'm pretty sure that only the EW has sufficient power to fix
broken wands. If that were not so, then Ollivander would be able to
mend the broken wands of his customers and everyone (all those who are
satisfied with their wands at least) would get their old wands fixed.
On the contrary evidence in the story indicates that once you break a
wand then there is no way to mend (that's why the snap the wands of
offenders, like it happened to Hagrid) it; only recourse is to buy a
new one or Spellotape it and use it, if the damage is minimal, as
Hagrid did.

If word got around that Dumbledore could fix broken wands (and it would
do so if he did so), then intelligent wizards would not take long to
figure out that Dumbledore has the EW. That's the last thing Dumbledore
wants.

Yes. Harry had to tell him the reason for Lockhart's amnesia.

While sharply put, I think that's fair comment. Well, maybe a little
unfair. The big picture in question very definitely does need to be
firmly in *somebody's* sights, else everybody suffers enormously. But
really, a broken wand? At that stage in the game? Such a thing became
serious when Ollivander disappeared, but we're talking about CoS here,
at a time when V was at an all-time low. How many hundreds (or
thousands?) of witches and wizards would have had such minor problems,
fixable only by Dumbledore? Should he have spent his time running
around the country mopping up everyone's little spills, or should he
have been doing exactly what he did do, which was to exert his
considerable intelligence against an apparently unbeatable foe who was
bound to rise again, greater and more terrible than before?

Dumbledore is aloof, yes, but justifiably so.

I think the real question here is why was Ron allowed to use a
defective and potential dangerous wand all year and not required to
get a new one.

But it would have looked suspicious if Ron had carried an umbrella

umbrella would have clashed with his hair.

Are you sure - I thought Dd got the Elder Wand when he beat Grindenwald in
the 1940s?

Though I grant you, I don't think JKR had thought of that plot twist at the
time (although obviously she did mention Gw so you never know...)

Interesting - that's my opinion too, and whilst I don't know if there are
enough other people who also think so to call it a consensus, it does seem
to be a fairly widely held view.

For me, it was the Peverell ring/horcrux that seems to have been the first
strong possibility of a clue to the deathly hallows in an earlier book,
although even that could have been fortuitous, though she would have had to
provide a different explanation of why Dd put the ring on. Not that I think
it being a deathly hallow was a very convincing reason for Dd to have done
something so stupid...

However, I suspect JKR's linkage of the DH plot back to the earlier mention
of Grindenwald was just clever usage of a minor side-story - there wasn't
enough early detail to suggest anything stronger like it being a very early,
deliberately planted clue to the hallows.

Also the number of people who would be the EW master *and* want to
repair a wand (especially their own) would be limited so maybe it just
wasn't ever tried.

It would have interfered with the plot. If Ron's wand had been

Well yes, he could. However I suspect perhaps JKR hadn't worked out
that bit of the plot, yet. Or maybe Dumbledore didn't want to
advertise ahead of time that he was the master of the Elder Wand. And
then there was the matter of it's being an old wand belonging to one
of his brothers. The wand chooses the wizard we're told. And perhaps
Dumbledore thought it would be better for Ron to have a new wand all
his own that had never belonged to anyone else.

Ah, but do we know Hagrid's wand was ever repaired? There are
references to his "keeping the pieces" but it's never stated they were
repaired. Ron was a Hogwarts student in reasonably good standing who
simply happened to have a broken wand. Hagrid's wand had been broken
because of his expulsion. There must be some wizard law somewhere
against repairing the wand of an expelled witch or wizard.

Yes, it has never been explained how Hagrid can do magic with a
"broken" wand and presumably it is the same wand as there is a reference
to his umbrella when Ollivander recalls selling the wand to him.

No, it was still broken. In the umbrella, the two halves are close
enough to perform some magic. It's partly why he wasn't allowed to do
magic, and partly why he failed at turning Dudley into a pig.

I figured the reason for his mis-spells, or not remembering how to do
them. Was after being expelled and having his wand broken, he obviously
was not able to continue his schooling and learn what he needed to be
good at being a wizard. Not being able to do it on a regular basis for
50 years, he would tend to forget some things. He was able to perform
spells, conjuring fire and water. With Ron's broken wand he was unable
to perform the simplest spells.
I think it was fixed and hid in his umbrella. But he was not able to
practice, because his wand was suppose to be broken. So more difficult
spells, like turning Dudley into a pig, he was never able to perfect.

I thought he was banned from magic because he was expelled - simple as
that.

I don't think that you can fix a broken wand. One that is damaged, maybe
like Ron's was, can be repaired. But since it was never really "his"
wand Ron got a new one. When Harry's wand broke in DH, he asked
Ollivander if he could fix his wand. And Ollivander said he could not.
So maybe wands that are broken can not be repaired.
But they can be repaired by using the Elder wand. Which itself would be
a bad thing if the owner went around repairing broken wands. Then people
would know he had the Elder wand and would be coming after him. Which is
where Dumbledore fixed Hagrids wand for him after it was broken. But
concealed it in his umbrella so no one would know he still had it.
And since Hagrid was not allowed to perform magic, his wand was broken,
he never learned all the things wizards normally learn.

Hello all fellow witches and wizards alike. I am charlie the wand
maker. And I have to say I truely beleve that once a wand is broken
all it power is broken with it. In mending a wand with a spell you put
that spell and power within the wand you are trying to mend, thus
creating a new wand, rather than mending the old one.

All that aside I joined this site for a purpose someone somewhere in
google is searching for me. Is it you??? I have here many hand crafted
wands. They are whittled with genuine hand tools. NO LATHES HERE. Some
of which are weeks of work others hours, Some that hurt me whilst
making them and others that flow simpy straight from the heart its
self. I feel the power within them as I make them but I have no
controll over this power. Thats where you come in. Like I said your
calling out to me but I cant find you, so if your looking despiratly
for a wand like no other and feel like this message is just for you
then it proberly is.

Here waiting inparticular is a hazel wand made with a barley twist in
it and set with 2 stones, one tiger eye and one rare white rose
quartz. Is this your wand???? Then best you claim her because she is
quite excited at the moment and ready for action. So if you feel this
wand is ment to be with you then please contact me direct on
dib...@hotmail.com. Any orders or quieries on my wands can also be
sent to this address.

And finally I still dont think you can mend a broken wand and I will
see you all here tomorrow to continue with this debate.

Love and light and all thats bright goes out to all witches and
wizards alike. Blessed be
