You know, the one in the Ministry that probably leads to the
Afterlife... I knew that Veil was going to be back... Except this
time the amphitheatre seats appear to be full of spectators
Here's the description of the veil from OotP:
This room was larger than the last, dimly lit and rectangular,
and the centre of it was
sunken, forming a great stone pit some twenty feet deep. They were
standing on the topmost
tier of what seemed to be stone benches running all around the room
and descending in steep
steps like an amphitheatre, or the courtroom in which Harry had been
tried by the
Wizengamot. Instead, of a chained chair, however, there was a raised
stone dais in the centre
of the pit, on which stood a stone archway that looked so ancient,
cracked and crumbling that
Harry was amazed the thing was still standing. Unsupported by any
surrounding wall, the
archway was hung with a tattered black curtain or veil which, despite
the complete stillness of
the cold surrounding air, was fluttering very slightly as though it
had just been touched.
'Who's there?' said Harry, jumping down on to the bench below.
There was no answering
voice, but the veil continued to flutter and sway.
'Careful!' whispered Hermione.
Harry scrambled down the benches one by one until he reached the
stone bottom of the
sunken pit. His footsteps echoed loudly as he walked slowly towards
the dais. The pointed
archway looked much taller from where he now stood than it had when
he'd been looking
down on it from above. Still the veil swayed gently, as though
somebody had just passed
through it.
'Sirius?' Harry spoke again, but more quietly now that he was
nearer.
He had the strangest feeling that there was someone standing right
behind the veil on the
other side of the archway. Gripping his wand very tightly, he edged
around the dais, but there
was nobody there; all that could be seen was the other side of the
tattered black veil.
'Let's go,' called Hermione from halfway up the stone steps. This
isn't right, Harry, come
on, let's go.'
She sounded scared, much more scared than she had in the room
where the brains swam,
yet Harry thought the archway had a kind of beauty about it, old
though it was. The gently
rippling veil intrigued him; he felt a very strong inclination to
climb up on the dais and walk
through it.
Harry, lets go, OK? Said Hermione more forcefully.
'OK,' he said, but did not move. He had just heard something.
There were faint whispering,
murmuring noises coming from the other side of the veil.
'What are you saying?' he said, very loudly, so that his words
echoed all around the stone
benches.
'Nobody's talking, Harry!' said Hermione, now moving over to him.
'Someone's whispering behind there,' he said, moving out of her
reach and continuing to
frown at the veil. 'Is that you, Ron?'
'I'm here, mate,' said Ron, appearing around the side of the
archway.
'Can't anyone else hear it?' Harry demanded, for the whispering
and murmuring was
becoming louder; without really meaning to put it there, he found his
foot was on the dais.
'I can hear them too,' breathed Luna, joining them around the side
of the archway and
gazing at the swaying veil. 'There are people in there!'
'What do you mean, "in there"?' demanded Hermione, jumping down
from the bottom step
and sounding much angrier than the occasion warranted, 'there isn't
any "in there", it's just an
archway, there's no room for anybody to be there. Harry, stop it, come
away — '
She grabbed his arm and pulled, but he resisted.
'Harry, we are supposed to be here for Sirius!' she said in a
high-pitched, strained voice.
'Sirius,' Harry repeated, still gazing, mesmerised, at the
continuously swaying veil. 'Yeah . .

As for the UK cover of DH, the one that shows the Trio sliding into a
pile of gold coins and jewels... A few observations and questions:
1. Are they back at Gringott's (all that gold)? Or perhaps the Room
of Requirement (perhaps with Ron getting his wish to be rich)?
2. Ron is holding the Sword of Gryffindor! Note that ruby handle...
3. Harry and Hermione are both bloodied and wounded.
4. Why are they wearing those odd robes? (And note that the holes in
the odd robes match the wounds, meaning they were wearing those robes
when they were injured.)
5. Those large blue items in the foreground appear to be some kind of
armor. The one to the right is definitely an old Greek/Roman style
helmet, and the one to the left looks like a chest covering.

Tru, I had noticed the hand to be to thin to be Ron's but I have not
seen that in fact, there is a house-elf. I say Dobby :)
I wouldn't say awful but somehow it reminds me of Charlie's Angels :)
Guessing from the figurine on the helmet's top and the ruby,
which is also on the handle of Gryffindor's sword, I'd bet that
this is Gryffindor's armor. And (though I wouldn't swear an oath
there) it seems that Harry is reaching for the helmet.
I've thought a bit about about the shadowy figures in the US cover,
and bringing everything together, those might very well be the
souls that had crossed the veil ("Deathly Hallows"?).

Goblin-made armor, most definitely. Although they may be
described in the book as part of that treasure trove, they may
take no part in the action.

Indeed a House Elf, but I think Dobby. What other House Elf
is free enough, loyal to Harry, and just plain nuts enough to
ride on Harry's back wielding a sword.
[Oy, Dobby with a sharp magical sword - that's SCARY.]
The four of them seem to be falling into a Big Heap o'

Voldemort "The Serpent King's" horde? A nice reward for saving
the World!

Not "a" locket, but THE Locket. I think that this is a
symbolic gesture on Harry's part to dishearten Voldemort. He may
have already destroyed it as a Horcrux. IIRC, Dumbledore also
wore the Peveral (sp) Horcrux Ring.
Obviously the battle has been going on at the Ministry for
some time as evidenced by the wreckage surrounding them, but what
are the looking at? Who are those spectators?
Will Harry force Voldemort back through the Veil?
Look at what we can see of the face, particularly the eyes.
Then look at the hands. I think that dude is a wolf! Of
course, many cover artists are not given any information about
the story they are illustrating, only certain directives from
marketing.

It is Voldemort. Arthur Levine confirmed this morning on some NBC news
show.

But we know two lockets. The Slytherin one a the fake. Harry has now the
fake and I wouldn't be surprised to know he carries him while hunting
the Horcruxes to be reminded of what DD did. Besides, do we know whether
this locket has any powers not yet known?

I think those might be people from the veil. Just a theory but if we
suddenly see them coming to help Harry it might happen what happened in
GoF, they gave strength and support to Harry, which is the opposite for
LV, who we know fears death and probably everything that is related to it.
I doubt it. This is fascinating - what seems more likely to me is that
perhaps they have found some sort of a secret hiding place of
Voldemort's )remember how Dumbledore told Harry to remember V.'s
magpie-like tendencies because they would be important later on? Maybe
he meant this...) Another possiblilty - possibly linked - is that this
has something to do with "Gold Bribe Beneath St. Mungo's". Thoughts,
anyone? (Oh my God I am so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
> 2. Ron is holding the Sword of Gryffindor! Note that ruby handle...
Hmm.... Perhaps a fullfillment of his wish to rise above his brthers
and everything (Mirror of Erised)? Or perhaps he's the heir of
Gryfindor!!! I seem to remember that one of the titles she was
considering was ...and the Sword of Gryffindor, so this must be
important.
> 3. Harry and Hermione are both bloodied and wounded.
Well, yeah. That kind of happens when you're fighting the ultimate
battle against the darkest wizard of all time. ^-^ jk

Another sign that perhaps this is related to V. being "magpie-like".
Maybe he has this whole hoard of ancient, significant artifacts stowed
away somewhere, and the Trio has to figure out which one is actually
the final horcrux or something - because it looks like they're sort of
buried in it all, like they've been looking for something. Esp. since
they have those frantic loks on their faces.
The biggest problem this book has facing it is its need to satisfy its
readers on so many points, and thus has so built up our expectations on
those points, that it can not possible meet our every expectation. It's
guaranteed to be a let down, at least to some extent.
Hmph. Way to crush my dreams. :-) jk. Yeah, I know - but we can still
hope, right? I'm sure most of the little things will be unanswered,
but perhapos she will answer some of them on her site and in
interviews. I do think that most of the really major stuff will be
included though. She just can't leave too many loose ends.

I know what you mean...
I've been saying for a while now that I thought the final
confrontation would take place in one of three places: near the Veil
at the Ministry, at Godric's Hollow (where it all started), or a
Hogwarts. Looks like we now know for sure (although I expect earlier
battles to take place at Hogwarts).
It looks like Harry's reaching out for something (almost as if he's
trying to catch the snitch in a game of Quidditch), and Voldemort is
also reaching out his hand, but it's hard to say whether he's trying
to ward something off or whether he's trying to summon something...
Notice that neither one of them is carrying a wand.

Read the description of the Veil room in OotP and it mentions an
amphitheatre with seats ("the topmost tier of what seemed to be stone
benches running all around the room and descending in steep steps like
an amphitheatre, or the courtroom in which Harry had been
tried...") I remember that some people here even suggested that it
might have been a place of public execution at some time in the past).
I believe I also mentioned that it could have been some kind of oracle
site (such as Delphi).
Also notice the sky. Why is there a sky visible if they are inside at
the Ministry? (This isn't Hogwarts...) I'm wondering if perhaps they
have gone back in time to when the Veil was used for whatever purposes
it originally served...? Sounds weird, but it might explain both the
spectators and the sky (unless the sky on the cover is just artistic
license).
As for the wreckage, the Veil is in pretty bad shape in OotP ("a stone
archway that looked so ancient, cracked and crumbling that Harry was
amazed the thing was still standing. Unsupported by any surrounding
wall, the archway was hung with a tattered black curtain or veil "),
so it's hard to tell if it has been wrecked even more or if that's
just the way it always looks...

You are right about there being a 4th character there. He (or she) is
hidden behind Harry, so I didn't notice it at first. It looks as if
it is riding on Harry's back. And given the pointed ears and bald
head (the only parts visible except for the arms & hands), it
definitely does look like a house elf (but we have three of them to
choose from: Dobby, Winky and Kreature, and that excludes any new
house elves...)

Could be. But the chest plate looks like it has a large snake on it,
which might mean it's Slytherin...

Yes, here's the quote:
"The young Tom Riddle liked to collect trophies. You saw the box
of stolen articles he had hidden in his room. These were taken from
victims of his bullying behavior, souvenirs, if you will, of
particularly unpleasant bits of magic. Bear in mind this magpie-like

But I assumed that referred to the horcruxes - that he would likely
use some of his valued souvenirs as horcruxes. This appears to be more
of a stash of wealth (note the coins). But you could be right...

I made a mistake. It wasn't (as someone pointed out) Ron holding the
sword in that cover drawing. It's a semi-hidden character behind
Harry (probably a house-elf) that is holding the sword. (Count the
number of arms in the picture, and there are definitely four people
there...)

Yes, but it means that the scene is probably later in the novel,
rather than at the start, since they've had time to get injured...

It looks to me like they are falling into the pile of treasure (hence
the surprise look), perhaps sliding down something and coming out
through the round portal behind them... which is why I initially
mentioned Gringott's (remember that underground roller coaster they
used to get to the vaults?)
Harry looks a bit like Clark Kent in that image.
(And I'm not even going to mention that Hermione's pose - if isolated
from the rest of the picture - is reminiscent of a movie freeze-frame
from a rather enthusiastic sex scene. ;)

Any chance of some one telling me what they see?
I don't mind more then one description. In fact the two I have been
told so far don't agree.
One person thought it was the vail room at the mom and the other thought
it was a grave yard.
So how about some of you telling this blind person what you think you
see in the art work.
Thanks.

My point exactly, but DD's magnificent watch must be far more
that a simple "time-turner."
I still expect Harry and DD to meet up in Book 7:
"Harry, you look like you've seen a ghost - Oh, I died
didnšt I, or will die in the past. I think we need to compare
notes."
However, given 6-to-5 pick'em, I would have to say that Harry
is wearing the True Locket of Slytherin, and that it is somehow a
talisman in his efforts against Voldemort.

If one of the horcruxes is well made it might be best to hide it with in a
hord of treasure. Though the ratty looking thing to one side is where I
would put the true item.

With the wounds on Harry and HG and some one with a sword behind them, then
it is posable that the person behind them gave them the wounds. That puts V
and creature back in the running.

Doesn't really matter. With magical healers any wounds can be healed before
the next important bit. In fact harry is normaly wounded or hert two or
three times in each book. With the wounds tending to get worse as thing go
on. How ever that traned has changed in the last few books. At the start of
the set harry woke up in the med wing. Then the phenix healed him. In three
he wound up in the med wing but awake afeter a bit of a sleep to save the
day.
in for we have him just resting after being healed. In Five he rips appart
dd office and in six we have him chaseing the DE's out of hogwarts. IF this
trends holds Harry will be walking at the end of seven and the worst wounds
should be around the middle of the book. Though I don't expect the trend to
hold as the last battle will more likely have a lasting mark to show that it
was worse then others.

That is what my brother thought. But he thought it looked like a grave
yard where at least one other person thought it was in the vail room of the
mom.
Ok,
The Scholastic Cover features Harry - who looks indeed older and no more
the childish image, IMO - as though he's about to grab something. He's
wearing a locket, some say: I think is a small bag. Lord Voldemort is
with him, in the same position. They both are in a place that looks like
an amphitheater, with people around them watching. It might have been a
duel before as we can see debris and ragged curtains. Personally, I
think the place is outside because it looks like we can see an orange sky.
The Bloomsburry cover has Harry, Ron and Hermione, as though they have
fallen through an arc (an arc, not "the arc") into a pile of treasures
and they are wounded. Among the treasures I can see a silver armor
(though it looks like glass to me rather than silver), coins and
jewelry. Ron and Hermione have more fancy clothes than Harry, who is
dressed in black. Also, Harry has what looks like a house elf being
carried on his back, and the elf carries a sword. Ron is in panic.
The back cover has Hogwarts (I suppose) at night, with the full moon and
a cloudy sky. We can see the Forest but it looks dead.
More artwork are a crystal ball with a snake inside and a stag (Patronus?)
The Bloomsburry adult cover is black with the Slytherin locket. An "S"
with green jewelry.
We can see someone's hand grabbing a sword. Due to the position, it
seems to be Ron but is too small. It's actually the elf that Harry has
on his back.

I don't think we will see time travle again in the books.
It is VOldemort, it was confirmed by the editor.
There are at least three covers posted.
First, the U K children's cover.
On the front we see Harry in front, Hermionie right, and Ron left, and a
fourth figure barely showing behind harry. They are falling with arms
outstretched. Harry has cuts on one arm. Hermione may have some
bruises, and both she and Ron's faces are reddened. Hermione and Ron
are both yelling, and Ron looks terrified. Below them is a pile of
treasure, gold plates and bowls, coins, some blue armor pieces, jewels,
all brightly colored. They may be falling with the pile of treasure or
onto it. The figure behind harry is elfish and is holding up a sword.
Behind them is a arch of golden blocks that they have probably fallen
through.
On the back cover, a moonlit castle, probably Hogwarts. Text at the top
reads:
"Harry is waiting in Privet Drive. The Order of the Phoenix is coming
to escort him safely away without Voldemort and his supporters knowing
-- if they can. But what will Harry do then? ow can he fulfill the
momentous and seemingly impossible task that Professor Dumbledore has
left him with?"
Inside front fly leaf reads:
"Harry has been burdened with a dark, dangerous, and seemingly
impossible task: that of locating and destroying Voldemort's remaining
Horcruxes. Never has Harry felt so alone or faced a future so full of
shadows. But Harry must somehow find within himself the strength to
complete the task he has been given. He must leave the warmth, safety,
and companionship of The Burrow and follow without fear or hesitation
the inexorable path laid out for him ...
" In this final seventh installment of the /Harry Potter/ series, J.
K. Rowling unveils in spectacular fashion the answers to the many
questions that have been so eagerly awaited. The spellbinding, richly
woven narrative, which plunges, twists, and turns at a breathtaking
pace, confirms the author as a mistress of storytelling, whose books
will be read, reread, and read again."
Below that (still on the flyleaf) is a stag, patronus style, and the
price L 17.99.
For the back fly leaf see another post.
The Bloomsbury adult cover features a gold locket or medallion, hanging
from a gold chain and laying on a black rocky background. It's design
is the letter S embossed and set with two rows of bluish jewels.
The rear cover is a photo of J. K. Rowling. Behind her are shelves full
of books.
The front flyleaf text is the same as before.
On the back flyleaf of the Bloomsbury adult edition this text.
The children's edition is just a few words different.
J K. (JOANNE KATHLEEN) ROWLING has written fiction since she was a
child. Born in 1965, she grew up in Chepstow and wrote her first `book'
at the age of six -- a story about a rabbit called Rabbit. She studied
French and Classics at Exeter University, then moved to London to work
at Amnesty International, and then to Portugal to teach English as a
foreign language, before settling in Edinburgh.
The idea for Harry Potter occurred to her on the train from Manchester
to London, where she says Harry Potter `just strolled into my head fully
formed', and by the time she had arrived at Kings Cross, many of the
characters had taken shape. During the next five years she outlined the
plots for each book and began writing the first in the series, Harry
Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which was first published by
Bloomsbury in 1997. The other Harry Potter titles: Harry Potter and the
Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry
Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, followed. J. K. Rowling has
also written two other companion books, Quidditch Through the Ages and
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in aid of

He is riding on Harry's back with one hand on Harry's shoulder.
He is in front of Hermione and Ron.
All you can see of him from behind Harry is a long pointy ear, the top
of his head the hand on Harry's shoulder, and the arm holding up the
sword.
Right, looks like an outdoor amphitheater, or indoors with an
artificial orange sky. Curtains are to either side of a rather large
opening. We are looking through the opening at Harry, Voldemort, and
the amphitheater which has shadowy figures watcing from a distance.
The amphitheater has arches around the top sorta like the Roman
Colliseum.

Doesn't look like a partial arc to me, looks like a circular pipe. If
you look towards the lower right, you can see the circle continue
under Hermione's arms. Hermione and Harry are sliding out head first
and Ron is feet first. The coins and jewels are flying all over the
place, probably from the impact.

It is night and the moon is full. Oh, you said that. sorry, those
clouds look weird.
No, the sword is held by a creature (Elf or Goblin?) that seems to be on
Harry's back at the time. Could they be under Hogwarts. Harry never
did really explore the Chamber of Secrets.
Maybe it's a 'fake' sky like the ceiling in the great hall....
Harry never really explored all of the Chamber of Secrets did he? Maybe
Harry will return to the Chamber - then again, maybe not - he doesn't have
Fawkes to pull him out of it now. :>)

No fair, you got the cooler cover. Is that Harry's vault? I take it
the tschatchies there are possible horcruxes. What's with the snake
in the bubble? is it's essence divided?

The scar into Harry's mind. The items represent memories. But who's?
Harry's/ or Voldemort's?
Is the outside the same sky from the US version?

Good eye.
Here's a fun theory that's wrong. Just as Voldemott created a new
baby body for himself, maybe The Trio create done to resurrect DD
into.

Looks more like that Green bauble or the breast plate to me. The
helmet's too far to his left.

Nope. I don't.
>Does the person behind harry look to be near them or far behind them and

It's between Harry and Ron/Hermione.
Yeah, I wondered about the wands, too. That IS strange. And it looks as
though they're both reaching out for something (I just inadvertently quoted
some bad Brian Adams lyrics, didn't I?). It reminds me of the Biblical story
of Elijah and the Prophets of Baal, both of whom were waiting for their
deity to consume their altars of sacrifice and in the end God comes through
for Elijah. I wonder what it is they're reaching for...

I thought it rather obvious. Who else would appear on it but
Voldemort?
>More artwork are a crystal ball with a snake inside and a stag (Patronus?)
You see a stag? I just see the snake.
Ah yes, that's the only logical way it could be :)
It seems to me that the Trio is returning to the Chamber of Secrets.
The "door" behind seems to be one of the large pipes conducting to the
Chamber of Secrets in Book 2.
Harry doing wandless magic? he's progressed a good bit then. He's
reacing up. Maybe he's summoning a higher power?
Obviously, he thlnks he's found a horcrux and he's reachiing for that.
All this talk of armour make me think of this:
"Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist,
with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet
fitted with the readiness that comes frm the gospel of peace. In
addition to all this, take up the shield of faith with which you can
extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of
salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of jGod. And
pray n the Spirit on all occassions with all kinds of prayers and
requests. With this in mind, be alert and slways keep on praying for
all the saints." - Paul
The saints, those deathly hallows, I wonder why we should pray for
dead people who are already there? I wonder if we will see the
flamiing arrows?
They are sliding out of a tube, that makes me think of CoS, but it
could be anywhere. Large pipes would be under any large building or
even the streets of London.
I sorta expect him to return to the CoS, I've been predicting since
the second book that he'd have to take the baskelisk that Trevor's
been hatching cause Hagrid wouldn't want it killed, just locked up
tight in the CoS, where it can only get out with the help of a
parseltongue.
No, not at all, the UK children's cover sky is orange, the US cover is
a night sky, black or dark blue

Ephesians 6:13, you don't have to look it up, I quoted it in another
post.
Barbarossa:
Punctuation error: the ball is on one side of the cover, the
stag patronus is on another side. The are smaller, "filler" art
works for the cover flyleafs.

Barbarossa:
I downloaded the very big artwork and opened it on my very
big screen - Alas! to no avail as it only showed that this was a
painting, not a photo. ;^)
The object around Harry's neck has the distinct roundness and
flat disk shape of the locket, but the painting gives no other
details. The color of the object is not golden, but that may be a
limitation of the style and type of paint used. Remember also
that the artist may have been instructed NOT to make the picture
too detailed.
The cord that holds the object does not look like a chain
(again possibly a limitation of the artist's medium) but it does
have the distinct catenary curve of a heavy chain.
Also, the object may well be the locket inside a thin leather
pouch as the color might suggest, and the presence of a
leaf-shaped fold of something where the object is attached to the
cord/chain.
All that we can definitely conclude is that Harry is wearing
something very important around his neck that he never wore
before.
Further, neither Voldemort nor Harry have wands, yet Harry
seems to be summoning or welcoming someone or someTHING.
Voldemort's hands, to my eye, seem to be in a defensive position
as opposed to Harry's hands. Harry does not seem frightened;
Voldemort's eyes show at least some concern as he appears to be
falling, or at least leaning backwards - perhaps into the Veil.
Yes, that is. thanks for the correction.

They are not ordinary robes. Harry's is, it's simply a black robe, but
Ron and Hermione are wearing something a little bit more elegant.
I doubt we would see wandless magic at this point, or that Harry will
have time to learn, which I doubt because JKR said wizards have no much
of control without a wand. Yes, it's weird they both are wandless though.
I try to figure any situation in which Harry would take Dobby with him.
So far, a friend told me after watching the UK cover that she think
Harry will visit the Malfoys's home. It make sense if Dobby is with him
as he already knows the place.
When I first saw it, I thought it was a Dementor.
Is holding Harry's shoulder.
I don't think it's a locket either. I suppose the drawn had been clearer
if so. It indeed look like a small bag to me.
The Brother Wand Effect is only activate if both shoot at the same time.
:) I happen to have both. Two local libraries compete with the both
different versions. I've still not chosen which I would buy.
Is that Harry's vault? I take it

You don't need to create Horcruxes to look like him, or do you? IICR,
it's ripping the soul what make you lose your humanity, not the creation
of Horcruxes itself.

I don't think it's a snake. Snake-like, with a long neck, but it also
has a bird's beak. Griffon? Phoenix? Basilisk, perhaps?
Harry and Voldy are wearing very similar robes. Voldy's robe has a
hood, but Harry's robe does not, or Harry's hood is in back, out of
sight. There is debris, rocks and broken wooden beams, strewn around.
The "curtain" on the right is tied back, as on a stage.
If it is a stage, then perhaps Voldy and Harry are merely waving to
the theater critic for the London Times (who is up in the balcony)
before they go into their production of Equus (with Voldy as the back
end of the horse).

LOL! That's awesome.
Catherine Johnson. Wait, Voldy's not the shrink?
Yes, you're right, I should be more upbeat about the book and what it
offers. I've enjoyed them all thus far--it's just that this one has a lot
of work to do...
I would say that it looks more like a phoenix. The piece of armor on
the right definately is more easy to see the likeness of a phoenix.
Yeah Fawkes?!?
