I just received my Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair, and in scanning an
extensive article about the Coppola, Spielberg, Lucas, Scorsese beginnings,
it seems that the affair between Melissa and Francis is somewhat confirmed:
"Francis Coppola had known Melissa Mathison.....since she was 12 years old.
He watched her grown into a tall woman---about 5'8". She was thin, flat
chested, and flashed a lot of gum when she smiled, but she was also droll,
and self assured. She worshipped coppola and he used to say, " She's the
greatest thing in bed I've ever had" It goes on to say how this
relationship displeased Coppola's parents"

It also mentions that Eleanor Coppola said her life was complicated "by the
fresh crop of adoring young protegees waiting in the wings" for he
husband---that is when the article goes into the Melissa story.

Bottom line, it's interesting, but doesn't matter to me, everyone was an
adult(at least I think Melissa was at that time) and who doesn't have a
"past" when they are first married in their mid 30's, I know I did!

Gee, can't anyone keep their mouth shut these days? What ever
happened to a gentleman (or lady) being discrete.

No kidding! Life is one big confessional these days. I think we can at least
count on Harrison not to tell us things we don't need to know.

I don't think this should've been told. Someone sensible wouldn't. Like
Harrison said, let's give him, his wife, and his kids the privacy they
deserve.

Having opened my big yap, I realize now that Tina Brown hasn't been at
Vanity Fair for years. Oh, well. The entire article, BTW, is very
interesting. It talks about the behind-the-scenes stuff of Coppola,
Lucas, Spielberg, DePalma & Scorsese.

Margot Kidder, an HF friend, was apparently a magnet for all
those people. She had a place in Malibu where everyone hung out.
Didion & Dunne, two more HF friends, lived up the road. Wonder if
there's where HF built the bookcases?

What about Melissa's parents??? She couldn't have been more than early 20's
when this affair took place (1973 and she'll be 50 this year).

Does anyone know if Eleanor and Francis are still married? This poor woman
not only put up with this very public affair with Melissa, but with
Francis' groping and fooling around in her own house. The article mentions
she would have to take her kids upstairs while her husband was cavorting with
nubile young things. I'd have been long gone by then. Not only is Coppola a
jerk, but cruel as well. And then to blab about his 'conquest' all over
tarnation, well, shoot, that just blows me away! His behavior is so far below
immature it's infantile.

What's even more interesting is what the article didn't say. While it
mentions the affair between Coppola and Mathison, even stating that Mathison
eventually wrote E.T., it DOESN'T say whether or not this is where Spielberg
and Mathison met, and later formed the collaborative duo that resulted in E.T.
Or whether Harrison Ford, who was in the Conversation, the film being shot
during the Mathison/Coppola affair, met his future wife then or not. OR even
if Spielberg and/or Lucas met Harrison during this time. It would have at
least provided a little dignity to the tastelessness of reporting just the
affair, that being the only reference to Melissa.

....and Margot Kidder's privates 'hung out' as well. She apparently wasn't
very shy or prudish about her body. There are some funny anecdotes about
Spielberg being absolutely, red-faced embarrased about her lack of modesty.

I would sure love to see his work. One nice thing about the E! profiles that
you mentioned, redhawk, was seeing the actual door Harrison was working on
when he was invited to try out for Han Solo.

Hi all,

Well, I have to say that "class" has died in our culture. Everybody is
revealing, the sordid details of their lives. Things that SHOULD be
and USED to be kept PRIVATE!!!! Makes me sick and I'm beyond tired of
it.

I thought at one time I read that Harrison met Melissa on the set of
Apocalypse set?

>They may have, but according to the recent HF bio, the real meeting
came some years later in Toronto, when producer/casting director Fred
Roos introduced the two. MM was working on the Coppola-produced
"Black Stallion" at the time, and this wasn't supposed to be a
romantic dinner. But obviously, it took hold.
