PROGRESS

On GRRM's NAB, he gives I count as an actual progress report on WINDS. The part that counts as a progress report is:

"I finished a new chapter today, another three days ago, and another the previous week."

Okay, maybe that's not much of a progress report. But correct me if I am wrong, but is this not the first time he has ever given us any kind of progress report since the release of DANCE? When, before this, has he so much as told us "I finished a new chapter today."

For all I know or can tell from his statements, it may be that the only things he has written are the 200-odd pages that were bumped from DANCE, plus the 3 new chapters that he finished this month. I'm not saying I actually believe that. But if someone were to suggest that this were true, I don't see how I could prove them wrong from anything GRRM has said over the last 9 years.

HOPES AND PREDICTIONS

He also says that he hopes to be finished WINDS "next year", by which he seems to have in mind next summer, when there will presumably be another convention in New Zealand. That's the discouraging part. With GRRM "I hope" is typically code for "I hope magic elves do it for me, because there's no other way it's going to get done".

WRITING SPEED

He says he can no longer write 150 pages a month, the way he could in 1999. That's not news though. If he had written as much as 25 pages a month, steadily over the past 9 years, he'd have about 2900 pages done by now.

POINTS OF VIEW

He writes "Of late I have been visiting with Cersei, Asha, Tyrion, Ser Barristan, and Areo Hotah. I will be dropping into Braavos next week."

I read the names as references to "point of view" chapters, because I can think of no other way to read them. The "Braavos" reference could refer to Arya, or it could refer to any other character who has visited that location.

GRRM once told a French newspaper that WINDS would contain (he thinks) 13 points of view. Already confirmed are (1) Victarion, (2) Tyrion, (3) Arya, (4) Sansa, (5) Theon, (6) Aeron, (7) Barristan and (8) Arianne. If my above interpretation is correct, we can now add (9) Cersei, (10) Asha, and (11) Hotah to the list.

He's also tweeted a few times about how he's done quite a lot of writing during the lockdown and in the absence of conventions and trips. I really don't know why he bothers, though, because the main reaction seems to be a wave of douchebags on Twitter yelling at him to write more.

I'll be happy if he does (I liked Fire & Blood), but am otherwise busy.

No idea, I haven't followed his progress much in the past decade. I think it definitely means he's making *more* progress than usual.

I do hope NZ gets another shot at Worldcon, even if I have no chance of getting there even if international flights are possible. Nice, France 2023 just fell through so it looks like 2024 will be the next one I have a shot at attending. Maybe we'll have some good news by then (bookwise or pandemic-wise).

Yeah, he also said that in his NAB. I was merely focusing on the fairly concrete reports of actual progress.

He bothers because nobody wants to read an unfinished story. Either he keeps hopes alive, or sales plummit.

Sure ... for whatever that is worth.

I'm guessing the pandemic will be over before the book. Of course, the pandemic could become endemic and never be over, but perhaps similar things may be true of the book.
