I had heard that The Right Stuf, Inc., which had earlier released
several tapes of the original ASTRO BOY series, was attempting to
re-create the original KIMBA THE WHITE LION by synching up the old
soundtracks with new Japanese prints of the "original" series. But
I'm not sure if this is what Marhsall has.

In 1989, Nippon Sunrise produced 52 "new" episodes of JUNGLE EMPEROR
(a/k/a KIMBA) but, to the best of my knowledge, they've never been
translated or broadcast outside of Japan.

In 1994, Wal Mart carried tapes of LEO THE LION. This was the English-
dubbed version of SUSUMU LEO (GO AHEAD LEO), the "sequel" to the original
KIMBA series produced by Tezuka in 1967 (and broadcast on the Christian
Broadcast Network cable service, 1984-85). Could this be what you have,
Marshall? Or is it the actual KIMBA episodes from the 1960's?

It's known as "Dodging The Bullet." The original title is registered.

Nope. They're the old ones re-done. Not awfully bad, either.

That project was stalled by the legal battle between Tezuka Prod. and Suzuki
in Japan. The Right Stuf has been trying to play proper etiquette with the
Japanese but it looks like one of the parties decided on a flanking action
and tried to come up with a "derivative work."

Sort-of-originals. At least the visuals.

One nice touch about the new ones is that they left Tezuka's original flash-
back transition in place (Fred Ladd edited it out over here) in the first
episode. Unfortunately, they also severely chopped the ending of that same
episode and clipped another scene or two, although they _did_ leave in the
bit about what Panja really did with domestic animals. (Hint: "Burp!")

I've got two different things here - first, I've ended up with a full set of
LEO THE LION - I wasn't aware that it was out on tape, so that was a surprise
for me. Secondly, though, and on the same weekend, I found actual KIMBA
tapes. These have a new soundtrack, and a new (and IMHO, inferior) themesong,
but they look like original animation, although I suspect the colors have been
brightened by computer. The mouths still move oddly, and you can see 'join
lines', wherethey seem to have painted the deeper cel layers with the exact
same shades as the top ones. That alone makes me think it's the original
animation. I only found two of these, and the package advertises four...

The KIMBA tapes are put out by UVA, those jolly folx who always manage to have
their own version of POCAHONTAS, THUMBELINA, etc, on the shelves a few weeks
before the Disney or Bluth film opens. Oddly, they also had one called LEO
THE LION, which (judging from the cover art) had nothing at all to do with
Tezuka.

You are confusing UAV with GOODTIMES HOME VIDEO, a completely different
outfit. (They have their "Hunchback" out already, btw.)

UAV puts out repackages of already-existing items. They are also now carrying
ANIMALYMPICS.

UAV has put out 4 tapes of the newly repackaged Kimba. They would not say
whether they were going to offer more. It really isn't their sort of item.

The 4 that are out now are also available in two versions. It also seems that,
other than rack assortments, they are only available via special order from
Movies Unlimited, a video dealer that offers literally everything in print.
They appear to only carry the premium version of the release (SP mode) and
they go for $19.95 a tape. Program material is the same on the rack cheapos
and the video store offerings, so you have to decide if it's worth the price
to get them that way.
