Yet another furry physiology topic: For the more human-like anthromorphs,
how furry would the babies be, how long before the fur grew in, and how
long before they are toilet-trained?
It's messy enough changing a human baby's diaper. Think about the added
complication of fur and a tail -- wet wipes aren't going to be enough!

Personally I think they would be born with fur. After all, most
animals that have fur are born with it. Granted marsuipials and some
rodents would be the exception to this.
As for diapers... oh boy... I don't want to know where THIS one would
go... but I'll put out a suggestion -
Shaving?

Or one of those 'pet fur gloves'. I gues that It'd be kinda like massage at
the begining and the end of the day.

I always draw my cat pics with the female cats having just normal breasts, no
extra teats. But then, I modled my Cats to be along the line of Kzin/human.

Well... If they are still close enough to the fur-roots the
need for a diaper may not be that great... Don't many species tend
for "triggered" elimination -- the mother nuzzles and grooms the
young to induce the needed results... if that behavior persists you
might find a new use for the diaper-changing tables being installed
in various public facilities...

Mice are born naked, so that isn't a problem.

My understanding of the rule of thumb is that the number of teats is
equal to the average litter size rounded up to the next even number.
That's why humans have two. I think it likely furries would also have
two, even if they did not have human-style breasts; it seems likely that
rearing a sophont child is such an investment, larger litters would be
unworkable.

They're never toilet-trained soon enought for any parent. I'm so glad
my diaper changing days are almost over.

One at a time, please! Litters are too hard to handle. Extra teats
might be a bonus for the male of the species but I don't want any

Well, when my girlfriend's wallaby, Beth, gave birth to her joey
(Whom was appropriately named Joey), he had no fur whatsoever. Then
again, he was halfway a fetus too. But as I noticed, most bats,
rodents & weasels give birth to "pinkies" too, so my guess is that
baby 'morphs are hairless until they are a few months old. I guess
furry parents hafta pottie train their offspring early to avoid a
potentially messy situation.

Oh the problems of having fur. We reptiles don't have that problem with
our hatchlings, And they mature more quickly so it only takes a few
weeks to teach them how to use a tolet.

Hmm, Furry or not furry really doesn't matter. They will get fur in
short order. Diapers, no problemo. people put diapers on their four
legged dogs now. Clean up would be no worse that a human baby in
diapers.

It was a real LONNNGGG BADDD Weekend and bottoms and diapers are kind of a
sore subject about now. However... Diapers are already available, at least
for dogs. Although, as I recall they are primarily used when the female
comes into heat.

I can attest that that is true-i once had to ride in the back seat
from FL to CA with a dog in diapers. she was 9 yrs old, and tended
to lose control of her bladder when she slept. Rather than put her
to sleep, like many, including our vet suggested, we got a box of
pampers, cut a hole for her tail, and drove off into the sunset.
diddnt bother her (not much did), and kept all of us happy.

Actually, a lot of RL furry infants don't poop unless specifically
stimulated to do so by mommy licking their behinds. Like their anal
sphincters default to "closed" instead of "open" like us. Keeps the
lair/den/nest cleaner.
Why shouldn't fictional furries have the same reflex?

Can I join in? It's a problem I've just dealt with in my 3rd book, Fire
Margins, due from DAW in Nov this year. I write about felinoid aliens -
Sholans - some of whom have human partners, and cubs... My problem was
easier. Kits are born with fur, eyes closed, and ears close to the head.
So are my hybrid human/sholans. As for diapers, well, I decided they'd
approach it in a realistic sense. Wrap a cloth round their rear when
handling them, and have them in very absorbant bedding - checked
regularly, of course! ;)
My son was under UV lights when he was born and his _bed_ was a deep
plastic container I nicknamed _the hamster cage_. More like a fish tank
on reflection. Well, he wasn't allowed to wear anything but a bandage
over his eyes because they light was to treat him for jaundice. Believe
me, mucking out his hamster cage, and him, was _not_ fun! We were in
there for 10 days! So I used those experiences for my cubs.
As for nipples and felines, I think the number of nipples relates to the
maximum kits they have. Logically, they can only feed those they have a
nipple for. I reckoned with my 6 foot Sholans, they'd have fewer young,
as that's what happens in nature. The larger the animal, the fewer
young. Also, sentience means a longer childhood of dependancy on the
parents, so the likelihood of multiple births goes down. That's what
happened with the primates at least.
I heard a talk by Barbara Hambly at our National easter SF con in '95
and she says she compares her alien cultures to ours and if they are
renaissance, then they'd have the goods etc we had in our renaissance
period. She had no need to reinvent the wheel. Is she can do it, so can
we. So if primates have fewer young who are dependant for longer, why
shouldn't my furries?
On a reality level, cats and dogs will clean up the faeces in the birth
nest, as well as eating the placenta for all important nourishment so
they can feed their young immediately after giving birth, but that's a
side of furries I certainly didn't want to carry forward into their
sentient evolution!! I must admit to wondering how Goliath the Gargoyle
-and the others- keep their breech cloths on with a tail as thick as
they have.... But then a lot of furries are drawn with tail holes in
trousers which I always considered would be similarly uncomfortable as
the crupper (?) on a horse's saddle!

Actually, breechcloths are a lot easier to manage with a tail than trousers
would be ... reality is, for a decent tailhole, you'd need elastic gathers
in it ... those plain holes would be too revealing for most furries,
especially canines, with those feathered or flaring tails. As for Goliath
and the others, it's pretty simple. Since a gargoyle's tail is prehensile,
he just doesn't do things that rip the tailhole ... at least, not lightly.
And if you look at Goliath's back, you'll see that he has a tailhole in the
back cloth ... since his tail is larger at the base than at the end, he
doesn't need gathers to make it fit properly. Similar tailholes show up in
the breechcloths worn by Brooklyn, Lexington, and Broadway, as well as the
breeches worn by Hudson.
(Hmmm ... I wonder if the breeches are an age thing?)
On a somewhat toonish note, I recently hurt my thumb and spent a day
working without it ... most things were easy enough, but clothes buttons
.. feh!:P
