I signed up for a webcomic at the end of January with
Keenspace, with which LancerAdvanced and I would have
a biweekly comic going there. Story's laid out, the
characters were based on real life persons, and it
was all ready for when Keenspace would get back to us.
Here it is, mid-May, and I never received a response
from Keenspace. Just tonight, though, I got a mail
from [KEEN]. Wow, a little late, but cool!
Nope, the rest of the subject:
Account Termination due to Inactivity
And here's the body of the message:
There is no good way to say this...
Your account has been found to be abandoned since signup for over 90 days,
and has been terminated.
We have archived your account, as much as it is, incase you wish to restart
the account. You are still welcome to sign up again, but we ask you to
please have comics ready to go next time around.
Thanks for trying us!

That's right, they're pretty much berating me because we never
used the account. You know, the account which we never
received a confirmation email with the password and the wheres
and hows and such. Really nice.
Well, I responded to the email to let them know what happened,
and got a bounce. Here's the headers from their mail:
Return-Path: <ro...@siteadmin.keenspace.com>

And a nice little "server is rejecting email" comes back.
What a nice setup, to somehow never send out confirmation
emails, berate users for not using those services by whatever
magic they think we have, and then failing to allow the
emails to have proper reply headers.
WONDERFUL JOB! Let's all applaud these screw-ups.

Thanks for sharing, and now I have a few thoughts on what you've said.
Remember, there are still people who LIKE their service, even with all the
flaws.
It's a free service, and like a few people have said (myself included), you get
what you pay for.

Cool! It's nice to read someone is actually following through instead of just
dreaming about it (like the guy in my own bathroom mirror -- he's been
"planning" things for months).

I don't know, I probably would have sent one follow-up mail to them either once
each month or every other month. People get busy and distracted, and even in
the best of conditions can let things slip.
One thing you did absolutely right: no one likes getting ten or twelve e-mails
in a week asking "Where is it? Where is it? Where is it?" Patience is a good
thing, and you've shown it, I think.

Well, that sucks rocks, I will readily agree, but at least they "archived"
instead of just flushing whatever you might have had and forcing you to start
over -- uh, even if you have to start over this time because you never really
got a chance to get started to begin with.

Take a deep breath. It's a comic, not a utility bill or a notice from your
insurer.

Okay, that is something I'll remember if and when I get around to creating
something for the web. Thanks for letting us know.
>WONDERFUL JOB! Let's all applaud these screw-ups.
Alright, here's two things you can try:
First, if you want to give KeenSpace another shot, there ARE a couple of people
who are successfully using their systems who also regularly post and read this
newsgroup. Why not ask for help and see if they can either give you advice to
get started for real, or assist in making a useful connection with the Keen
people? With my earlier thread (titled "KeenSPLAT?") that is what I did, and
I'm happy I can now see the comics I was missing.
There is another alternative, if you don't want to give them another chance,
and I'm slightly surprised you didn't remember it. According to Google, on 12
Aug, 2001, you, yourself, posted a notice for Fur Comics, a free host for
periodical sequential art, and gave the URL http://www.furcomics.com/. I just
checked, and the webpage is still there, and it looks like it is still being
hosted by the Dragon Magic Online Store as well. If it isn't part of your
system (pages or server), just contact the person who is supposed to be
maintaining it and see if they are still interested in having some content
instead of a relic advertisement from last year. If it IS part of your system,
use it and don't forget to let us know when you are ready to show us what you
created.
I do not want to start another long thread full of flames and finger pointing;
I really am trying to offer advice, and I hope it helps.

People have asked about FurComics and other projects I have.
And, silly me, I've decided to tie them together. You know, the kind
of services where if you have a comic on FurComics, your login there
works with another service just to be a logged in user. That type
of setup. Takes a bit of work. (:
But I'd prefer that others would use FurComics instead of just me,
and it's still a bit aways off, so I went with Keenspace for a current
account. I would not have been so upset had their automated
response not have had bad headers, or a reply-to to a server
which would never respond to emails anyways.
Oh, and a bit more, thanks to gNAW, the artist, for a kickass
mascot coming soon to tie all the services together. If you have
yet to see his work, it's on VCL under gNAW.
They should be able to help you out if you explain the problem.
Good luck! Looking forward to new comics!
