More and more often the Park resembles a bus station! There are all

: Is it just my imagination, or is furrymuck falling apart ?
: Oh, granted, not in terms of being too large (although it is a little on
: the big side :) )
: but in terms of _who_ is there..
FurryMuck currently has some really fantastic people to talk to, some
really obnoxious people, and every sort in between. A year ago, or two,
or three, however, it had... Well, all of those same types. Just as any
large mud does, or anyplace in RL with a lot of people in it.
I have noticed that people who are in a place for a long time tend to not
like whatever it may change into, because they got so accustomed to the
way it was when they first showed up. A lot of people in Austin, Texas
complain that they wish it was still like it was back in the early
eighties. Having arrived more recently myself, I gotta say that the way
it happens to be now is a lot nicer than most any other city you could
live in, regardless of what it may have been like before.
FurryMuck? Been there a year and a few odd months. Magnificent when I
arrived, fabulous now, still noplace else in any reality quite so special
to me.

: I started in January 1994 (one year later) and expected to find
: the same. I found a lot of friends (some really close ones too!)
: and learned to ignore the morons.
I also have made a number of friends on FurryMuck as well as Furtoonia. There
are a few idiots and I avoid/ignore them as I may. Pretty much the same as in
RL as far as I can tell though the ratio of idiots seems a bit higher RL ;-).
: The superheroes have not disturbed me too much, but I must admit
: that I always felt a bit uneasy at superior powers, be that
: giants or any furrys with huge powers. I had the impression that
: such is not needed in a non-combat-biased MU**.
I find the most interesting characters to meet and to play are the ones that
show a few weaknesses along with thier strengths. I agree that other than
whatever RP value it has, that describing a character with comic book super
powers is pretty silly in a Muck where there is no way to enforce those powers
on another character (I'm assuming most characters are set unkillable). I
assume there are MUDs where such powers actually do something but FurryMuck
and Furtoonia aren't among them.
: Hmmm, such people you find in every community. If you want a
: 100% furry MUCK try TigerMUCK (tigerden.com 8888), ask Tigerwolf
: for a char there (tige...@tigerden.com). They have a `no
: humans allowed' rule there. FurryMUCK has lost the 100% from its
: title screen since long. I have not met eyeball_jones.
I might have to check this one out. I admit to mostly ignoring human
characters on both FurryMuck and Furtoonia. THey alway seem a bit out of place
there. If I wanted to interact with fully human characters I'd be calling
LamdaMoo.
: The annoying guests .... I guess FurryMUCK has the annoying
: guest regulations (be trapped in the guest room, can't use
: anything useful) with a reason, and you can also sweep them.
: The bad thing about these regulations might be that it scares
: newcomers away.
Seeing as how anybody who can lof on as guest can also get a legit character I
see no problem with this policy. I've met a few guests that hopefully nver do
though. I've also met a few who seemed to understand what the Muck was about.
THey were friendly, asked questions and were fun to be around. Needless to say
they were welcomed and they already had some friends when their regular
characters were created. I don't treat guests any differently than a furry I
just met (other than I generally welcome them and offer to answer whatever
questions I might be able to). I don't like seeing guests treated badly just
because they are guests and this happens more often than it should. That is
something that really might scare somebody off who might be a very good
addition to the Muck.
: I would say that recently Furtoonia came very close to FurryMUCK
: as unpleasant developments of society are concerned. I don't
: know whether a MUCK must be really small (sized like TigerMUCK,
: Sociopolitical Ramifications or TrailsMUCK) to avoid these
: problems. These are some examples of recent developments on
: Furtoonia - here I avoid telling names:
It would have to be REALLY small to avoid them. Probably a muck with a single
character would be best if you want a guarantee of no disagreements or
offensive (to you) actions occuring.
: - Players leave because they think some actions in public should
: have been stopped by a present wizard, which did not happen
Did happen and the issue was dealt with and is considered closed.
: - It seems that the concentration of visible BDSM is even higher
: than in FurryMUCK, which offends many players
I don't know about this but as Furtoonia is much smaller it's probably more
likely you'll run into it more often. The whole idea of "political
correctness" and that you somehow have the innate right never to see, hear, or
read something that might offend you personally is totally repugnant to me and
many others. There will always be those with differing ideas of what is proper
at what times in what places. This applies even more in RL. While I don't go
out of my way to offend others I also refuse to walk on eggshells around those
with trully thin skins.
: - In a disagreement over a minor thing, one wizard threatens to
: remove the builder flag of a player, which can only be
: described as an abuse of wiz powers
I hadn't heard about this one and I'll probably check into it. I suspect it
would take much more than a "minor thing" to have that happen. I do know that
some major abuses by a few led to a building quota on Furtonnia though if you
have a project in mind and ask to get it raised it likely would be. Stuff like
an entire city of rooms in your private apparnment and public areas with
messed up links and no real descriptions are not desireable. If that's what
you want then ftp the software and start your own Muck.
: Another thing which disturbs me about Furtoonia are some
: building things.
: - Of all MUCKs that I know, Furtoonia has the highest
: concentration of `empty promises': things which are mentioned
: in descriptions, but if you get curious and try to go there,
: you find nothing but a locked exit, which can be very
: frustrating if this has not changed when you try it again some
: months later. Or landscapes stay unfinished. One example of
: this is the `Fox Manor'.
: - And some landscapes still have no real location, or two at the
: same time, which allows some `impossible' round trips.
: Smeazel's forest and its exit from South Park is the most
: prominent example. It seems that it should be somewhere in the
: north, but you have to go south to get there.
THanks for the info, I'll pass it along. Furtoonia is still pretty new (less
than 3 months old. It's grown quite fast. I hope you also take the time to
check out some of the places that are so well done that it's fun just finding
them and looking around. Some of the areas put anything I've seen on FurryMuck
to shame.
: Despite all the new MUCKs, I won't probably give up good old
: laggy FurryMUCK so soon, because it is the place where you meet
: much more friends than anywhere else. This is the advantage of
: being big. Convincing them all to move to another MUCK of your
: choice is not easy.
And would likely make whatever muck they all move to just as laggy as
FurryMuck. Having other choices when my lag threshold on FurryMuck is reached
is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. There is plenty of room for all on
the net and hopefully everyone can find something enjoyable to them.

I found that FurryMUCK was mentioned in an article in the German
weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT, which has a high reputation as an
intelligent paper for the educated classes. The article is about
MUDs in general, and this is the paragraph about FurryMUCK:
Translation by me:
Mud sex is a widespread phenomenon. Yes, it seems that
it spurs people on when they can leave their real body
and have a made-up one at their disposal. All the more
powerful the keyboards rattle, the one in Hongkong, the
other in Paderborn, and what has become virtually
legendary in this respect is the "FurryMuck", a Mud,
which is inhabited exclusively by cute furry beings.
Nothing at all is foreign to them, as people whisper to
each other; day and night they pursue the most
outrageous excesses.
Now imagine you are a German who knows nothing about FM and
reads this in the newspaper. You will only go there if you are
interested in excesses, and will be disappointed if you don't
find them. Obviously the author of the article, Manfred
Dworschak, has never been in FM. (I think I know all five or so
German furrys.) But FM's reputation in the general public
attracts people who might not be the most valuable additions to
Furry society because they arrive with the wrong expectations.
Unfortunately, said excesses appear to be the most spectacular
thing to report, and as FurryMUCK is becoming more popular, they
are the first thing that people hear or read about it, even more
so when not only trendy zines such as Wired but even respected
mainstream newsmagazines spread these things.
The annoying guests .... I guess FurryMUCK has the annoying
guest regulations (be trapped in the guest room, can't use
anything useful) with a reason, and you can also sweep them.
The bad thing about these regulations might be that it scares
newcomers away.

I know that `empty promises' exist in FurryMUCK too. Just go one
step south from the park and read the desc of Furry Avenue:
`Watch out for Crystal Towers, coming soon!' This desc exists
since I'm there (Jan 94), and I have never seen that anything is
built east of that room.
The relocation of Drachenswald in FurryMUCK is the best proof
that it is possible to eliminate geographical inconsistencies if
you get many players to cooperate, which needs good management
abilities. I think it were TeddyRuxpin, Leonie and Cymoryl who
built the two, three or four links which were needed for that.

| Might it be appropriate for a German speaking Furry to send a

I thought about sending a letter to the editor .. but maybe too
much time has passed already since the article came out (7th
october).
What are we really about? Sex and excesses are a part of the
lives of many furrys, but they usually take up only a small part
of their time. However they are the most spectacular things to
report about.
There is a finite set of German furrys. Tes-Tui-H'ar, Yorg,
Miavir, Unci_Narynin and some more. The ZEIT article did not
mention a FurryMUCK address, I wonder whether it will attract
[m]any newcomers. Perhaps my letter will, if I get to write it.
(If you can give me a good line of argumentation, Spotty, mail
it to me :)

Query: Might this be an appropriate slogan for the Net?
<shrugs> I find it a good sign that FurryMuck has become a major socializing
nexus for the MUDs. Sure, you get a lot of weirdos and idiots, but the
ratio is roughly the same on that score as it was before. Only now,
there's more people around, so there's more idiots. Are people really
griping about the notion that furfandom's becoming more popular with the
mainstream?

This is always the cry of the relative newbie on Furry -- whining
and bemoaning the IMMINENT DEATH OF THE MUCK when they finally
realize that not everyone is a strict furry character.
Well, duh. It's been like that for years. Those of us who have
been around a long time have KNOWN that for years.

friendlier?
It seems to me that tolerance for everyone is pretty darned tootin'

But these have always been around as long as FurryMUCK has been
around. Some people have fantasies about having fur, others about
having Phenomenal Cosmic Powers, and others about having fur AND
Phenomenal Cosmic Powers.
Ask around about POWERGAMER sometime with the old folks.

The 99 44/100 percentage or whatever it is currently was always
meant to be a joke. Furry was NEVER 100% anthropomorphic, nor
was it even intended to be. The percentage has, in fact, fluctuated
on a whim in the past much like the currency name.
