Can anyone tell me how society was protected/served by punishing
schoolteacher Mary Kay Letourneau?

One of (to my mind) the greatest love-stories of our generation.
You can't let THAT go unpunished. Other people might do the same.

And what would be the harm in that? Mary Kay and her "victim" are married.

The "harm" perceived is that if enough people decide things like that
aren't so bad, they might repeal the law. That would <GASP!> make SIN
legal!!!

Like I said, "Other people might do the same," if it is looked at
properly as a love-story instead of some horrid kind of sex-abuse.

Can't allow "kids" to start having sex, you know ... especially not
with anybody even a year or two older than they are. It's unfair
competition.

The old folks control the rules and laws; and after a while they get
jealous of the young, pretty, handsome, and innocent ... which,
once-upon-a-time they were. If they can pass laws against the younger
competitors getting jobs, getting lovers, and mainly having the fun
older people are finding harder to do these days, then why not?

"If you've got the power to prevent others from doing what YOU want to
do, then why not use that power?"

Pretty much why they will never legalize prostitution in this country.
Legalize it and it would get the prostitutes off the streets, most would
be more like high end call girls at reasonable prices. Make pimping
illegal so the girls keep their earnings and there would be some real
nice prostitutes out there. But the establishment will never permit it
even though those who have the power to change the law are probably
the best customers of high end call girls.

It'd be like it was 100 years ago when girls would pick a few men in their
neighborhood and have sex with them in exchange for money to spport them..

But ... But ... But ... Prostitution is a *SIN*.
Don't you realize that?

BTW: Pretty much the same applies to drug "crimes".
In both cases, police are about 85% against legalizing either one.
Which sounds like a good reason for NOT legalizing either one, until
you realize how much of a stake LEA has in enforcing such "crimes".

They'd <GASP!> have to lay off a large portion of their workforce(s)
because of the sudden drop in "criminal activity".

Rather like what happened when Prohibition was repealed.

But, mainly, the biggest opposition to legalizing either one is STILL
church and religious groups intent on criminalizing sin. Ever notice
how many "blue laws" are still in effect?
SO many things you just can't do on Sunday.
WHY?

There was a news article a week or so ago about SCOTUS overturning
a guys sodomy conviction. He had been convicted for sodomy for
asking a 16 year old girl for a blow job. SCOTUS overturned the Sodomy
laws years ago.

The higher up political police officials are who are agains legalization.
They need easy methods to prove they're "tough on crime". However, new
"designer drugs" like the bath salts/incense, moly and Krokodil are examples
of why we need to legalize lesstoxic drugs. Worst is Korokodil/Crocodile
because it rots the human body from the inside out. Users begin to look like
zombies after a while.

In Florida we're charging a 12 year old and a 13 year old as adults for
cyber bullying a 12 year old on Facebook until she committed suicide. But
heaven help anyone who has sex with a girl of either age - even those two.

How can it be a chare is she didn't do the deed?

Good time to ask all males out there to have themselves tested for HPV. HPV
infections caused throat and mouth cancers are spreading as teens equate a
blow job as not being sex. Goes for females too. Michael Douglas's tongue
cancer was caused by HPV. It's putting a strain on his marriage. The
implication is that he got it from some woman in the past. Hard to imagine
with Kirk as his father that Michael would have had to give casting
directors blow jobs to get parts.

Let's be safe out there.

But, you'll notice, the guy had to go to the Supreme-Court to get the
conviction overturned. ;-{

I wonder what kind of logic the Government tried to use in upholding
the conviction?
