I understand that these two didn't like each other. Is that true? Can anyone
give me the details?

Hmmmm. It would be curious if true. I believe it was Lou Reed who read
the induction for FZ at the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame.

The only legend I ever heard regarding Lou was that Nico announced her decision
to stop seeing him by announcing at a recording session: "I am no longer
sleeping with Jews."

Maybe Frank said something similar.

DON'T KNOW IF IT'S TRUE BUT I ASSURE YOU they are at opposite ends of
the ability scale in virtually every way.
I'de be pressed to think of a worse guitar player with a voice as bad.
He's the best of course of all the worst if some wrong's been done he

Bob Dylan beat them both with Blonde On Blonde.

The Velvet Underground & Nico was a single LP (albeit in a gatefold
sleeve).

Both the Mothers and the Velvets were signed to Verve. Lou Reed's
dislike of FZ may have stemmed in part from resentment over the fact
that Verve delayed VU&N and released Freak Out! first.

What is the exact release date for Blonde On Blonde?

Bobdylan.com and the AMG say May 16, 1966.

I used to own a book of Rock Quotes (published late seventies) which
included a couple of Lou Reed lines disparaging about FZ's lack of talent. I
had taken them at face value until the induction happened, then presumed it
was either ironic, or manufactured in a Blur vs Oasis kind of way. Wish I
could find the book. I think it was published by Omnibus in the U.K.

According to Electric Don Quixote, Lou Reed described Zappa as the
single most untalented person he'd met in his entire life, and went on
with more insults. That's why the Zappa family were so offended when
Reed was selected to induct FZ into the Hall of Fame.

I read a book about the Velvets where one of them (Sterling
Morrison, I think) claimed that FZ was bashing them onstage at the
time. I think Sterling also mentioned the Velvets feeling that Verve
was putting more money into the Mothers than them.

I remember seeing FZ mention, in one interview circa the 90's,
that he saw the Velvets end a set by leaning a guitar against an amp
and walking offstage, leaving it to buzz obnoxiously, and he was not
pleased at what he thought was a hostile gesture to a nice audience.
In another latterday interview (the Groening one) he denied that there
was any Mothers/Velvets rivalry.

Frank also made some rather disparaging remarks about the VU while they
shared the stage. He made fun of them because they were too drunk and
stoned to play, and instead they would pose as tough new yorkers.

I remember Lou criticizing Frank for the 'cruel' things he said about the VU
while he was on stage. Plus, both Frank and the VU held the whole San Fran
hippy scene in contempt.

Perhaps a bit too much free glove was going around at the time.

There is also an interview where Zappa praises the first VU album as "good
NY folk music". Althought there must be some irony, he played "All
tomorrow's parties" during his radio show on BBC 1 (end of the 70's). Lou
Reed said during the speech at the Hall of Fame that Zappa is one the 3
persons that he really respected in his life together with Delmore Schwartz
and Andy Wahrol. And I think he was sincere (or tried to be)

I'm really trying to think of a way to defend Lou but it's a bit like being a
disaffected American suddenly finding himself feeling patriotic in a foreign
land as its citizens bash the US: you feel a strong urge to defend but you know
you've got very little ammo.

I like Lou -it's just that he's done very little (especially in comparison with
Frank) that I can use as an example as to why I like him.

His "New York" album is a classic. Other than that I couldn't
tell ya.
Lou was nowhere near the musician FZ was and didn't really
try to be. His lyrics (when not overly dark and/or pretentious)
were his strength.

That sounds sincere to me, and it's not inconsistent that Reed and Zappa
should butt heads over their art. By all accounts Reed really did admire
Warhol, yet he quarreled with him to the point where they were not on
speaking terms at the time of Warhol's death. Lou's just an abrasive kinda
guy.

I think you're right. We can also take consideration of the fact that the
two famous Lou Reed quotes are from very different times of his life & he
may have changed his mind about Zappa's music (which is something very,
very, very different than his music).

Also consider that piece's sonic opposite, "Dead Air," which consisted
of the MOI glaring silently at the audience until they revolted.
