I used to see this man's name as "director of engineering" on every LP
from MGM Records or its subsidiaries (Verve, Kama Sutra), the only
exceptions being the ones with the Bizarre imprint. Even on The Animals'
albums which were, I believe, recorded in Great Britain by Mickie Most.

I think his name appeared on Herman Hermits' albums too, but I'm not
sure because I never bought a Herman's Hermits LP (and wouldn't admit it
even if I had.)

Could it have been just some sort of contractual deal in which his name
appeared as "director of engineering" on an album whether he was
involved or not?

Nice work if you can get it.

I have an early Animals single from Sweden which bears the sleeve
blurb "A Mickie Mouse production."

That sounds right. Note that Valentin is credited as director of
engineering, not as recording engineer.

Ami [Hadani] and Tom [Hidley] are credited as "the world's most patient
engineers" on Freak Out! (Hidley was the recordist, turning the tape
recorder on and off.)

On Absolutely Free, Ami Hadani is credited as recording engineer and
David Greene as remix engineer.

I notice that when MGM/Verve acquired the right to market Phil Spector's
Righteous Brothers recordings, Val Valentin was likewise credited as
director of engineering.

Which probably was a surprise to Larry Levine.
