Frank Listened to "The FUGS", & got inspired quite a bit from them.
The FUGS released a CD called "songs from my portable forrest".
I highly recomend it to all..
You can see in this,, how Frank was inspired.. The Fugs CD is an
exceptional studio mixdown & supberb hi fidelity quality,, much like
what Frank brought fourth too.

I figure a Fugs fan would probably check this topic out. I have been
wanting a copy of "It Crawled Into My Hand, Honest" for some time now.
Not as a collector, mostly for nostalgia value. Any chance someone could
tape it for me? More than happy to send tape & return postage. Many
thanks in advance. Jerry Posner, Zappa fan since 1968. Please e-mail me

Could you please provide the source of this fact?

Thanks!

I would guess it's more likely the Fugs and the Mothers share an
appreciation for Lenny Bruce, William Burroughs and Lord Buckley.

Or maybe both the Fugs and the Mothers ripped everything off from
the Velvet Underground.

Actually, if FZ was influenced at all by the Fugs, it wasn't until the Garrick
Theatre days, when the Fugs had a similar gig in the Village. The Fugs were
an offshoot of the Beat movement, and had more in common (and were good
friends)with Allen Ginsberg than Johnny Guitar Watson. Ed Sanders himself
will say the Fugs were primarily poets, rather than musicians. Some folks
assume the Fugs were an influence on the Mothers because both were not above
the use of scatalogical subject matter.

I've read Sanders say a number of times that the Fugs were influenced
by ZAPPA. Being a hardcore fan of both, I highly doubt that Frank
cared much about the Fugs, one way or the other. Frank satirized
popular culture, and that's where he "took the pulse"--the Fugs, as
much fun as they were, hardly fit into that category.

Also, as I recall, you tended to find both Absolutely
Free and Tenderness Junction (?) near one another in the
record racks of that time, and their respective photos
of wild-eyed men with lots and lots of hair suggested
musical similarities (which I was too young to want
to investigate then).

Weaver moved back to Texas, then Tucson and became a translator of
Russian documents for the CIA. And an NRA member. He has published
some poetry (I thought I had the article transcribed as a text file
but cannot locate it but if anyone wants the 1984 article which talks
about the above, email me you smailddress).

OH boy. I don't know about the Fugs, but the Mothers DID NOT rip off VU.
Any moron could tell this by listening to their music. DO try to prove
me wrong, though...

The FUGS (actualy Ed Sanders) have recently begun rereleasing their
catalog on CD. In addition to the first two Fugs albums, there is a
NEW recording titled "The FUGS" Live from the 60's. It has many Live
(as you may expect from the title) live songs from their heyday. It
is great listening for those familiar with their 60's era, drug induced
days, and a good starting point for anyone unfamiliar with their work.

Anyway, along with a number of unreleased songs on the old albums, Ed
Sanders has written extensive new liner notes where among other things,
he mentions how both he and Frank received anonymous phone calls
threatening to blow up their houses. Sanders also mentions on the Live
from the 60s liner notes that the Fugs partied all through the summer
of 66 with friends like Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa. I don't think
I saw it on these liner notes, but somewhere I read that Frank once
called the FUGS "The Fathers of the Mothers". So, there clearly seems
to be a connection there. I also recall reading once that during the
Garrick Theater days, both the Mothers and the Fugs would attend each
others shows and steal material (unexplained material) from each other.
My guess would have to be outragousness since their musical styles were
quite different at the time.

Superb high fidelity? When we were kids we would sit in amazement at the
grungy sound the Fugs put out. Their albums on ESP Disk were notorious for
their "recorded in a garage" sound. The Fugs Second Album (a.k.a. "The Fugs")
has "stereo" which consists of someone sitting at a control board and panning
back and forth. The Fugs were a great group, and I would dare say most
Mothers fans were also Fugs fans, but high technical quality? Naw...You're
pulling our collective legs.

Unfortunately, mine's all scratched up, too. GOLDEN FILTH was
also a great Fugs album. I suspect that both of these will eventually
be released on CD by Warner Bros., if they haven't already.

What the fuck? Doesn't everybody know The Mothers & The Fugs were in
residence in The Village at the same time?
I'm sure they did communicate in SOME form , re: TRFZB regading mailing
snot.
But, as usual, I could be wrong.

TRFZB mentions an attempt by two guys, one called Pigpen or something
similar, to gross-out Zappa one day when he was outside the Garrick
barking up business. Something about heavy tongue-lashing complete
with hawg-calling and all totally ignored by FZ.

Wasn't that two members of the Fugs? They would have to know FZ
reasonably well for there to be much point in the antic.
