I found this unusual assesment of Frank Zappa in the Rolling Stone
review of Waka/Jawaka "...Originality has never been Zappa's strong
point."

I've heard Zappa's music described as many different things, but
'unoriginal' is a new one to me.

Rolling Stone Magazine know nothing about original art, they just tell
good things about the people who sell alot, to please the most part of
the little sheeps.

Ben Watson was right to criticize Christgau's idea that Waka/Jawaka
was a Miles ripoff. FZ was doing "King Kong" and other jazz-rock
hybrids onstage before Miles started experimenting with rock and funk.

In early '68, FZ's 'serious' work to date was assessed as
"Frankensteinian."

In 1975, One Size Fits All was said to be "completely
uninspired."

I got one even better: The RS review of "Zoot Allures," (which the
reviewer hated, natch) said that the lyrics really detracted from the
quality of the album, particularly in the title cut.

RS also called "Bongo Fury" the second-worst album of 1975 (Lou Reed's
"Metal Machine Music" taking the honors there).

As I recall, "Crawdaddy" didn't like "Zoot Allures," either.

DownBeat liked Frank. (or any REAL musician mag).

month)

This reminds me of a review from the 80's of three of the early Ryko
Zappa CDs by a writer named Jeffrey Morgan (who more recently enjoyed
Barry Miles's unflattering portrayal of FZ). Morgan panned two of
them, but liked SUNPYG, mentioning that having strong musicians such
as Eddie Jobson on board helped. Never mind that Jobson plays nothing
(or at least very little) on the track where he was present.

Yes, that was written by one Gordon Fletcher, who at
some point also declared Blue Oyster Cult to be the
best rock and roll band since The Beatles - better, even.

Ecchh.

I love Frank, but those two albums (Zoot and Bongo) are near the
bottom of my list as well. Not that there isn't great material on
both, but neither hold together for me as well as most of the others.

But why should I have done so? Just because I love the man (or his
memory) and his music doesn't mean I can't have critical opinions.
Does it? What's your point?
