As The Idiot reported in his News page, the master tape of
Understanding America is visible in Peefeeyatko
(approximately at 37:50):

It seems that this part of the documentary was recorded in FZ's
digital editing room, since it has some equipements for stereo
digital masters, rather than the ones for multitrack recording.

For example, you can see one unit of Sony PCM-1630 Digital
Audio Processor on his desk:

And there are three units of Sony DMR-4000 Digital Master
Recorder in the rack by the desk:

DMR-4000 is essentially a U-matic video tape recorder:

AFAIK, the combination of PCM-1630 and DMR-4000 was frequently
used in the early stage of CD mastering. Probably most of the
vast quantity of tapes shown in this footage are the "1630
digital masters", which were waiting to be edited by FZ.

The room also has an obsolete equipement - to the right side of
the desk, the E-mu Modular synth is hung on one wall! About
four years ago, we discussed it in the "Joe's Menage photos" thread:!topic/
